How's Long John Doing?

Let's check in on John Daly:

  • Six starts so far in 2008.
  • Three cuts made.
  • $29,091 earned.

You know what? All things considered, that's not a bad start for Daly. Perhaps a more important indicator for Daly these days than cuts made is withdrawals. And Daly has one WD in six starts.

On the other hand, Daly had one withdrawal through his first six starts of 2007, too, but wound up the year with six WD's.

Still, Daly is doing better that an least a handful of others on the PGA Tour in the early part of 2008, in terms of cuts made. For example:

  • Billy Andrade - 4 starts, 4 missed cuts
  • David Duval - 4 starts, 4 missed cuts
  • Trevor Immelman - 3 missed cuts in three events with cuts
  • Geoff Ogilvy - same as Immelman

(Immelman and Ogilvy each won matches at the Match Play Championship and have more money earned than Daly.)

And there are a few golfers who already have five missed cuts in 2008:

  • Mark Hensby - 5 of 5 missed cuts
  • Nick Flanagan - 6/7 (but was 9th in the one cut he made)
  • Ken Duke - 5/6
  • J.P. Hayes - 5/6
  • Chris DiMarco - 5/6
  • Shaun Micheel - 5/6
  • Johnson Wagner - 5/6
  • Rocco Mediate - 5/7
  • Ryan Armour - 5/7

These days, saying that John Daly is not the worst player on Tour is a positive!

I miss the old days
It kills me to see Long John flirting with obscurity.  I'm a huge fan and hate to see him struggle.  I miss the old days of him out there week to week bombing it out there and still showing a little touch in the short game.  Sure, there were some rough patches, but I miss those days when JD was going well.

but what about...
...come on, John still leads the Tour in Hooters Wings consumed, and he's probably sold ten times that $29k in t-shirts and other JD swag !! :-)
