Most Memorable Masters?

Yahoo Sports is running a poll asking readers to choose the "most memorable Masters" from a list of 15 candidates. You can check out the candidates and then vote in the poll here.

There are some great choices on the list of 15: Gene Sarazen's "shot heard round the world" win in 1935; Arnold Palmer in 1960; Tiger Woods in 1997. But there is one obvious choice that should easily emerge as the winner: Jack Nicklaus in 1986. Not just the "most memorable" Masters but probably the most memorable - most electric, for anyone who actually saw it - win of all-time.

There is a curious omission from Yahoo's list of candidates, however: Phil Mickelson's win in 2004. I wonder why they left that one off the list? It was a great final round, with some big names in the mix; back-and-forth throughout the round; Ernie Els making a move; and then Lefty makes that final-hole birdie to win his first major championship. It was huge.

Yet, on the list is Nick Faldo's 1989 win. With the possible exception of Fanny Sunneson, I don't think anyone has ever said, "Yep, I remember where I was when Nick Faldo won ..." And Art Wall charging down the stretch to beat Cary Middlecoff in 1959 - but no Phil? What the dealio?

Masters more memorable than Faldo in '89
  1.  Nicklaus 86
  2.  Crenshaw 95 (after Harvey Pennick died)
  3.  Woods 97
  4.  Mize 87
  5.  Woods 05 (the chip-in at 16)
  6.  Couples 92
That's just among the ones I actually saw on TV.  Of course I do have vivid memories of rooting for someone/anyone to win OTHER than Faldo in '89, '90 and '96.

Nicklaus
Probably the one, somewhere in the 60s, when Nicklaus shot 64 in the final round which gave him the win and tied the existing course record. I followed every hole inasmuch as Jack's playing partner was Dan Sikes (full blown attorney in addition to being a pretty good pro - Final group on Sunday at the Masters!!)

I was living in Jacksonville at the time - Sikes was a Jacksonville boy and got plenty of local ink.

I didn't meet or know him but the hometown link was there.

Never up, never in.
