Sunday Finishes

... and Open Thread ...

PGA Tour
Phil Mickelson charged on Sunday with a final-round 67, taking the FBR Open lead away from J.B. Holmes late. But Holmes answered with a birdie on the 18th to force a playoff, then beat Mickelson with another birdie on the first extra hole.

European Tour
Tiger Woods surged with a 65, and Ernie Els found water on No. 18. Martin Kaymer finished birdie-birdie-eagle, but that wasn't enough to stave off Woods, who won the Dubai Desert Classic by a stroke over Kaymer and two over Els and Louis Oushuizen.

Nationwide Tour
It was a runaway for Australian Jarrod Lyle at the Mexico Open. In his first Nationwide Tour victory, Lyle won by five strokes after shooting 63 on Sunday. The runner-up was "Big Break: Mesquite" contestant Matt Every.

Ladies European Tour
Karrie Webb defended her Australian Women's Open title by birdying the second playoff hole to defeat Ji-Yai Shin. Webb and Shin both shot 67s to finish at 8-under 284. Rookie Melissa Reid was third. Amy Yang, who won the ANZ Ladies Masters two years ago as a 16-year-old, was fourth.

pre-knee...
...If Tiger's win had happened before Ernie's knee injury, this would be his greatest comeback win ever - but Els' killer instinct (such as it is) just hasn't been there since the injury.

You'd never belive that Els had won this tournament three times in his career.

Comback win
Damnit ...missed that this morning.  Will triple-x Golf Channel re-run it tonight?  What a comeback.

Holmes post hunder-drive strut ...
Anyone see it, on 18 in the playoff?  Kind of made me chuckle.

Should read 'thunderdrive' not 'hunder'
And I haven't even had any beverages during this Super Bowl evening.

I liked it...
...after watching Holmes' knees knocking all afternoon, it was good to see his confidence pumping like that.

What I didn't much like was Jim Nance' BRILLIANT analysis - acting like only HE was capable of seeing and interpreting Holmes' strut.  Jim Nance - the master of the obvious - truly a tradition like no other.

Jim Nantz is a friggin clown ...
I was watching on a TV at the gym, so no sound, and in this case that was a good thing.

I liked the thunderstrut also.  I thought his birdie to get into the playoff was nails.  Loved the way he played that hole.

Lee Westwood ...
watched the whole Dubai replay last night, great tourney.  One thing I was wondering, has Lee Westwood lost a bunch of weight?  Maybe this is something that is common knowledge here.  I know that he was starting to slim down last year but he looks 10 years younger now.  Good for him, he's obviously getting his game in form as well.
