Random thoughts:

  • Does J.B. Holmes have any chance against Tiger Woods? Of course he does. In match play, anything is possible. It seems like a very, very small chance, however. Remember when Holmes first came on tour, he went by "John B. Holmes"? I've always suspected that he switched to initials because he got tired of hearing references to John C. Holmes. Like this one.
  • In the Jones Division, Woods is the No. 1 seed and Rory Sabbatini is the No. 2 seed. If they both win their first three matches, they'll meet in the division final. Keep your toes crossed.
  • Great first-round matchups: Zach Johnson vs. David Toms, Geoff Ogilvy vs. Justin Leonard, Jim Furyk vs. Colin Montgomerie, Padraig Harrington vs. Jerry Kelly.
  • Can Monty beat Furyk? Furyk is off to a slow start this year, and Monty is a great match-play player. That's a good upset candidate. And Leonard vs. Ogilvy is another good upset candidate, going by the seedings. Leonard is playing great so far is 2008. And although his Ryder Cup record is terrible, his Presidents Cup record isn't. He can certainly make an impression on Paul Azinger at this event. Ogilvy has just kind of been muddling along for a while, but he is a past champion here.
  • Other good upset possibilities: (12) Calcavecchia over (5) Baddeley; (13) Allenby over (4) Stenson; (12) Katayama over (5) Immelman; Snedeker (12) over Westwood (5).
  • No. 1 seed most likely to lose in the first round? Ernie Els has looked pretty shaky this season and doesn't have a good history here. Plus, when he decided to play he ruined my hoped-for Anthony Kim vs. Tiger Woods first round match. In fact, he bumped Kim from the field. A pox on your match, Ernie.

missed a couple...
How about the rest of the #2 players in the world with a shot at Tiger down the line ?

 - Ian Poulter is in the bottom half of the Jones bracket with Sabbatini.

 - Adam Scott in the Snead quarter - the latest to be dubbed a #2 player thanks to Butch Harmon. (thanks a pantload, Butch)

 - And, of course, Phil Mickelnuts across the aisle in the Player quarter.

I'm keeping an eye on Woody Austin - he's pretty cagey and really wants a shot at match play in the Ryder Cup.

Boo Weekely's in the same boat.  He showed a lot of game at the World Cup playing team golf we'll see at Valhalla.  His partner in China, Heath Slocum, said that they talked a lot about wanting to play Ryder Cup together this year.  If he makes it out of the first round, he could face Sergio Garcia - his old adding machine buddy from last year - Sergio has been shakey this year and a bit on edge with a temper tantrum last week.

I would love to see Stuart Appleby v Mickelson, and Howell v Furyk in the second round.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"
