America Dominates Singles to Win Solheim Cup
I wonder if any of the American team members will say something like, "Not bad for a bunch of chokin' freakin' dogs" in the post-match interviews ...
The U.S. dominated Europe in singles Sunday in Sweden, winning 8.5 of a possible 12 points:
- Catriona Matthew, Europe, def. Laura Diaz, U.S., 3 and 2
- Pat Hurst, U.S., def. Sophie Gustafson, Europe, 2 and 1
- Stacy Prammanasudh, U.S., def. Suzann Pettersen, Europe, 2-up
- Juli Inkster, U.S., def. Iben Tinning, Europe, 4 and 3
- Sherri Steinhauer, U.S., halved with Becky Brewerton, Europe
- Angela Stanford, U.S., def. Trish Johnson, Europe, 3 and 2
- Morgan Pressel, U.S., def. Annika Sorenstam, Europe, 2 and 1
- Laura Davies, Europe, def. Brittany Lincicome, U.S., 4 and 3
- Nicole Castrale, U.S., def. Bettina Hauert, Europe, 3 and 2
- Paula Creamer, U.S. def. Maria Hjorth, Europe, 2 and 1
- Linda Wessberg, Europe, def. Cristie Kerr, Europe, 1-up
- Natalie Gulbis, U.S., def. Gwladys Nocera, Europe, 4 and 3
The final score is U.S. 16, Europe 12. Congratulations to all the women involved, who played remarkably well in - and did remarkably little whining about - the horrendous weather.
If Europe was going to win the Cup, they needed their big four - Sorenstam, Pettersen, Davies, Gustafson - to produce at least 3.5 points in singles. Those four managed only one point today (Davies' victory).
