Report: Lee Trevino Retiring at End of Year

Lee Trevino told the Boston Globe over the weekend that he has only two more tournaments to play, and then he's through with competitive golf. "As retirement announcements go," the Globe reported, "it was as informal as it gets."

Trevino said that the AT&T Championship in San Antonio in October would be his final appearance in tournament golf. He may still play an occasional pro-am or corporate outing, but his days on the Champions Tour are over, Trevino said.

First Palmer, then Nicklaus, now Trevino. The golfers who defined eras on the PGA Tour, then helped create and sustain the Champions Tour in its younger days, when it was sometimes must-see TV.

Trevino won 29 times on the PGA Tour, including six majors. He would have won more but for a life-threatening lightning strike during a tournament in 1975.

Trevino is considered one of the greatest ballstrikers in the game's history, and there's no doubt he belongs on a list of the Top 15 players ever.

He is also famous for his quips. It was Trevino who coined the phrase, "You can talk to a fade but a hook won't listen."

Some of his other quotable quotes:

  • "If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron."
  • "You don't know what pressure is until you've played for $5 a hole with only $2 in your pocket."
  • "You can make a lot of money in this game. Just ask my ex-wives. Both of them are so rich that neither of their husbands work."
  • "There are two things that won't last long in this world, and that's dogs chasing cars and pros putting for pars."
  • "There's no such thing as natural touch. Touch is something you develop by hitting millions of golf balls."
