Ricoh, the Cereal Killer
Sad news today for lovers of the fact that three of the four women's majors have food products in their names.
Beginning in 2008, Weetabix is out as title sponsor of the Women's British Open, and Ricoh is in.
I'll miss Weetabix, a British "breaded goods" maker (breakfast cereal among their best-selling products). Along with the Kraft Nabisco Championship and McDonald's LPGA Championship, the Weetabix Women's British Open formed the holy trinity of food-product majors. Besides, "Weetabix Women's Open" is fun to say.
Ricoh is a Japanese-based office equipment company. Nothing funny about that.
Better than Ricoh would have been Ricola, the Swiss cough drop maker. Then the Women's British Open could have signalled the start of the tournament by dressing Annika Sorenstam in lederhosen and having her belt out, "Reeeeeeeeeeeee-colaaaaaaaaa!" You'd watch that.
