John Daly Banned by CBS

Below is the new television ad by Maxfli, featuring a beer-grabbing John Daly, that has been banned by CBS.

Why?

CBS refuses to air the ad, spokeswoman LeslieAnne Wade says, because it violates network guidelines prohibiting ads "with direct, or implied, excessive consumption of alcohol," especially when an ad also "involves hazardous activity."

You might recall that Daly has made several trips to alcohol rehab, which obviously haven't helped him much. In the ad, he's shown asking for and getting a pitcher, and grabbing a beer away from another guy.

Also depicted are cart antics that would (or at least should) get you banned from any golf course. And golfers hitting into the group ahead of them.

What do you think? Does this ad go to far? Does it cross the line? Or is this much ado about nothing? Watch it, and leave your comments.

My own opinion: the last thing we need is to encourage more drunken yahoos to take up golf.

But by far the thing about the video that is most disturbing? Having to listen to John Daly sing.

Daly
I know I'm in the minority on this, but I've never been able to stand Daly, and have never understood why anyone would choose him as any sort of hero. That said, it's his life ... but this is a pretty cheap ploy by Maxfli, that's for sure.

hero
i wouldn't say john is a hero, but he's just a normal guy, unlike so many other golfers. unfortunately he's had some problems and doesn't always deal with them well (part of what makes him "normal" i guess). but i agree this ad is in poor taste

CBS had to play the adult
We all know that behavior like this goes on every day on the golf course...excessive drinking, sliding carts across expensive fairway grass, hitting into the next group...but it's not the kind of behavior you want to encourage, especially on a PGA Tour broadcast.

The other almost subliminal clips not mentioned in the explanation of the cancellation are the girl (shown from behind) lifting her shirt towards Daly on stage, and another well developed young lady "swingin' free" (though under a shirt), and yes, the bad Daly singing.

If this was just something Daly was doing for fun on his own web site, that would be ok - but this was for a national television broadcast.  Kids would be watching - and parents would have to explain that this isn't acceptable behavior even though they were watching John Daly doing it.

CBS is correct to not show this commercial.
