Lucky Lafayette
(Editor's Note: Bumped up from the diaries. Just to make sure you know, Janellaxo is Janell Howland, and she's writing about winning the Futures Tour tournament in Lafayette, La., last week.)
Who knows...was it the food? was it the housing? was it the golf course? Or was it the fact that after an OK week in Frisco, I drove 10 hours to pick up two of my best friends and go to the CMT awards in Nashville?
On Monday I picked up Meredith Duncan and Kristy McPherson at the airport in Nashville, where we got our hotel and got ready for the awards. We had such a fun time watching what had to be one of the best concerts that I have ever been to.
We went downtown afterwards and hung out and finally got back to our hotel at 3 am, then had to leave at 5 to drive to Lafayette, La.
So with lots of coffee, and taking turns driving, we pulled into The Wetlands parking lot at 3:25 just in time for the 3:30 mandatory rules clinic.
From then on, things just kept falling into place. I was back in fun housing, with fun friends and super fun food! I pretty much went out on a limb this year trying some food and wine that I had never had before. So who knows, maybe it was the food and wine. But whatever it was, it was an amazing week.
First round on Friday I shot my career low of 65. I had 1 bogey on the card when I missed a green and failed to get up and down, but other than that it was really the easiest round of golf I have ever played. Kristy came out and followed the back 9 and that was special to have her watching.
Saturday was a totally different story. I played scared. And it showed in my putting. I was not stroking it well and after 8 holes I told myself to knock it off and get something going. So I came back and finished 1-under on the back to finish at even for the day.
Then came Sunday night. I was playing with Mo Martin, who I had never played with, and one of my best friends, Jenny Gleason. What a day.
Mo is an amazing girl to play with and if you want to know class, she is it. After making a silly double on the 2nd hole, she never got upset, just went about her business and what do you know? she called a penalty on herself the very next hole for grounding her club and her ball moved. No one was around, no one saw it, no one would have known, but she knew. That is what is so great about this game, it's a game of honor. Everyone should take a page out of Mo's book, she was close to the lead and STILL knew that in the honor of the game, it's what she had to do. My hat's off to Mo!
The rest of the day was just great. It was pretty jammed at the top of the leaderboard. I failed to get up and down for birdie on the 9th, but unfortunately for Jenny, she failed to get up and down for par, so that put a 5-way tie at the top.
I knew the back 9 was scoreable for me, so I just said, it's go time. I almost made birdie on 10 but stayed patient. Hit 3-iron into 11 and 2-putted for birdie. Then on 12 hit my ball to 4 inches - man, I thought that one was going in.
Then here comes the fun. On 13, a par 3, I hit my shot right and it was on the line of the hazard, as I was walking over to check things out I saw a snake and screamed and ran up to the green. I don't think my heart calmed down for 10 minutes, and it seemed like it took me about that long to hit the shot. Wound up with bogey, but knew just to stay patient.
On 15 walking up, I knew I was one shot back, but I had an impossible putt. I told myself just to get it close and 2-putt at worst. As I was walking to my ball, I was just staring at the leaderboard and the number 9, knowing that I had a couple good opportunities coming up. I hit my putt and said right away "hit a house" and it did, as Mo said, "it hit the only house on the green, the hole." That was an unbelievable feeling. So now I knew things were good.
I hit 9 iron to about 6 feet on 16 and made that. I knew at that moment I was either leading or tied, with two holes to go. I told my dad, I just need four good shots and we are done. And that's how it worked.
Two good shots on 17 with two putts and made par.
Then it all came down to 18. I had struggled with that tee shot every day, but I knew what I needed to do. I picked my target and swung and that ball FLEW out of there, it never moved off its line and I really got hold of it. What a great feeling.
Walking up to my apporach I saw the leaderboard, but it was still too far to read, but I knew that the name at the top had too many letters to be mine so I told Dad, one more good shot and we're golden. I pulled out 8-iron and hit, everyone on the green was yelling for it to get close and when it hit the green, they were cheering, it was such a fun feeling. One I will NEVER forget.
As I was walking up to the green I told Mo that I was going to make the putt because I didn't want to play any more golf today. I was reading my putt, I knew what I needed to do, birdie to win!
I lined it up and stroked it. With about two feet left if it just kept turning and what do you know ... IT WENT IN!
I couldn't believe it, I was in shock, Jenny came running across the green at me, everyone was yelling, I was crying, I couldn't believe it.
WOW what an amazing day.
I am so very blessed to have had my dad caddying for me, my mom riding around watching, and my two best friends in the group with me. I was there when Jenny won her first event on the Futures Tour, I was there when Kristy won her first event on the Futures Tour, and to have them both there when I won my first event was truly a gift from God, and one I will NEVER forget.
So now you have heard all about Lafayette, hopefully I'll give you something great to read about again this week in McAllen.
Until then, happy reading and happy golfing! :)
