Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Wednesday = Q-School Finals

The Q-School finals begin on Wednesday. Which ones? Both. The PGA Tour and LPGA Tour each tee off the final stage of their respective qualifying tournaments on Wednesday. The LPGA's will conclude on Sunday (five rounds) and the PGA Tour's on Monday (six rounds).

There are a lot of recognizable names in the PGA Tour field. There's not quite that depth in the LPGA Tour field, but still plenty of "name" players - players with past LPGA experience, LET experience, and even a smattering of Big Breakers.

Some of those "name" players from each field:

  • PGA Tour: Pat Bates, Notah Begay, Henrik Bjornstad, Craig Bowden, Tom Carter, Greg Chalmers, Kris Cox, Marco Dawson, Bubba Dickerson, Matt Every, Kenneth Ferrie, Carlos Franco, Harrison Frazar, Tommy Gainey, Robert Gamez, Jeff Gove, Craig Kanada, Skip Kendall, Colt Knost, Greg Kraft, Doug LaBelle, Steve Lowery, Bob May, Greg Owen, Ryan Palmer, D.A. Points, Dicky Pride, Ted Purdy, Tag Ridings, Chris Riley, Esteban Toledo, Grant Waite, Duffy Waldorf, Y.E. Yang.
  • LPGA Tour: Rachel Bailey, Irene Cho, Jeanne Cho-Hunicke, A.J. Eathorne, Louise Friberg, Nikki Garrett, Sophie Giquel, Ashley Gomes, Brandi Jackson, Sarah Kemp, Kelli Kuehne, Taylor Leon, Becky Lucidi, Paige Mackenzie, Paula Marti, Kiran Matharu, Anja Monke, Virada Nirapathpongporn, Jane Park, Ashley Prange, Anna Rawson, Nina Reis, Sarah Lynn Sargent, Ashleigh Simon, Louise Stahle, Ya-ni Tseng, Kristina Tucker, Amy Yang, Jacqueline Yang.

That's plenty of high-quality candidates on both sides.

So: Who's going to make it out of Q-School this year? The PGA Tour awards cards to the Top 25 plus ties; the LPGA Tour to the Top 17.

Here are my picks on both sides for the five players I'm most confident will earn their cards:

PGA Tour
Duffy Waldorf
Colt Knost
Y.E. Yang
Carlos Franco
Robert Gamez
LPGA Tour
Jane Park
Virada Nirapathpongporn
Ashleigh Simon
Ya-ni Tseng
Taylor Leon

Along with Colt Knost, other college studs to watch are Dustin Johnson, Chris Kirk and Brendon Todd. Casey Wittenberg, a college stud from years past, is back to take another crack at it and comes in playing very well.

I do not, alas, think Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey will make it this year. Although I do believe he'll earn Nationwide status and get to the PGA Tour after a year on the Nationwide Tour. Gainey has shown a propensity for falling victim to nerves the first time he's in a situation (such as when he was close to making the cut in his first PGA Tour event; or close to winning his first Nationwide Tour event). I predict "Two Gloves" will be in good shape at the start of the final round, then shoot 77.

On the LPGA side, word is Jane Park's ballstriking is exceptional heading into finals. If the putts fall, she'll win by six strokes. She is easily, in my opinion, the most talented player in the field (although, you should know, I am a Jane Park groupie).

What about the quartet of talented LET members, Nikki Garrett, Anna Rawson, Kiran Matharu and Sarah Kemp? All gifted, but I suspect only one of the four will make it this year, and that Anja Monke may finish ahead of them all.
