Tiffany Joh Wins USWAPL

Tiffany Joh defeated Jennifer Song, 2 and 1, to win the 2008 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship on Saturday at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisc.

Song, an 18-year-old with dual Korean and U.S. citizenship, won the first hole of the 36-hole finals. And while the 21-year-old T-Joh, from San Diego, Calif., squared the match a couple different times, Song never trailed until the 33rd hole.

Song led 2-up after nine of the morning 18; Tiffany squared it on the 13th, but Song took the lead back and led 2-up again at the end of 18. On the 30th hole, Tiffany parred to Song's bogey, cutting Song's lead to 1-up.

It was the start of four wins in five holes for Tiff. They halved the 31st, Tiffany won the 32nd to square the match, then won the 33rd to go 1-up and the 34th to go 2-up. When they halved the 35th, Tiffany won the title.

It is the T-Joh's second win in this USGA championship. She also won in 2006, and is now one of only five golfers to win the Women's Publinx more than once.

View the match scorecard, or visit the USWAPL homepage for more news to come.

Update: From the USGA article:

“It means everything,” said Joh, who dedicated her title to the father of her college roommate (Beth Wallace), Chuck Wallace, who died six weeks ago of cancer. “I think back when I first won it, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I was just kind of out there thinking, oh, bonus rounds. I get to play another round. I think I stumbled into it. Afterwards, I realized how much it did for my confidence.

“I think winning this time around when I really wanted it, it was that much more meaningful.”

And the lede to Beth Ann Baldry's nice article on Golfweek.com:

Tiffany Joh hasn’t changed much since the last time she won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links. She still downplays her abilities, still looks at each victory as a lucky break more than deserved reward.

C’mon Tiffany, deep down you must have thought of yourself as one of the favorites this week?

"Really, really, really deep down," said Joh, the 2006 WAPL champion and a U.S. Curtis Cup player. "Like very deep down, like core of the earth deep."

Speaking of Michelle Wie ...

One of her "youngest ever" records was broken this week at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. Wie had been the youngest-ever competitor in a USGA championship, having played the USWAPL at the age of 10 years, 9 months in 2000.

But now that record belongs to Allisen Corpuz, who played this week at the age of 10 years, 3 months and 9 days. Corpuz posted rounds of 81 and 88, falling short of advancing to match play (Wie made it into match play back in 2000, losing in the first round). She is 5-feet tall. She is 111 pounds. She is in fifth grade.

"The common denominator of the very successful junior golfers is they have poise and a maturity beyond their years,” said swing coach Kevin Ralbovsky, who served as her caddie this week. “Allisen is very composed on the golf course. She doesn’t get flustered or rattled. So her demeanor is conducive to good golf."

So, where is Corpuz from? Hawaii, of course.

And where does she go to school? Punahou. As if you had to ask!

And the Next USGA Championship Is ...

... the Women's Amateur Public Links Championship, where Waggler Tiffany Joh was the champion in 2006.

The WAPL begins Monday with two days of stroke play, followed by a cut to the Top 64, then on to match play. It's played this year at Erin Hills in Wisconsin, a course that is similar to Washington's Chambers Bay in that it's a very young course already drawing raves and already catching the USGA's eye. In fact, the USGA awarded the WAPL to Erin Hills before the course even opened! It has since been given the 2011 U.S. Amateur, and don't be suprised if Erin Hills quickly gets a U.S. Open, too (or if the PGA of America beats the USGA to the punch and puts a PGA Championship there).

It's a public course designed by veteran architects Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, and working with them Golf Digest architecture editor Ron Whitten. Count Wisconsan Steve Stricker among those very impressed by the site, which he compared to Shinnecock Hills. The land was carved and shaped by glaciers, and in designing and building the course, dirt was moved on only four holes.

As for the tournament: In addition to Tiffany, favorites in the field include defending champion Mina Harigae, Amanda Blumenherst, Kimberly Kim and Jennie Lee (all of whom were Tiff's Curtis Cup teammates).

Others to keep an eye on are junior stars Tiffany Lua, Stephanie Kono and Jennifer Song; Southern Cal freshman Lizette Salas; and T-Joh's UCLA teammate Sydnee Michaels.

Morgan Pressel's sister, Madison, is also in the field.
