TMI? Hank Haney Pens Book On His Years As Tiger's Coach

As if we didn't already know entirely too much about Tiger Woods' life off the course, we're about to learn more:

Doug Ferguson reports through Business Week:

Hank Haney has written a book about the six years he spent as Tiger Woods' swing coach, a volatile time in which Woods went from winning nearly half of his tournaments to a scandal that derailed his pursuit of golf history.

Without giving away any details until "The Big Miss" goes on sale in the spring, Haney believes the book will be hard to put down.

"I get asked all the time about Tiger, what it was like to work with him," Haney said in a telephone interview. "I felt like I had a front row seat to golf history. It just kind of chronicles a little bit of what I went through, what I dealt with, how I coached and the observations I made.

"I think there's a lot of things that people are going to find interesting."

And a lot of things that people are going to talk about endlessly.

It's said "never meet your heroes, because you'll always be disappointed." That's true, too: no matter who it is, the closer one gets to any given public figure, flaws will inevitably emerge. Tiger Woods has plenty of flaws, of course, and for the past several years, they've been covered endlessly -- the once seemingly perfect golfer and family man has been exposed for all to see in a manner not seen since Dorothy ripped back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz.And just when that furor finally seems to be in the rear view mirror and the coverage on Tiger returning to his golf game comes this.

No offense to Hank Haney, who seems to be a very decent sort of fellow, but hopefully his book will be light on Tiger-is-a-cad disclosure and long on insight on what it's like in the top of the top echelon of championship golf and how its best player of this generation went about preparing to compete.

Hate the marketers...not the game :-D

Announcing a book that won’t be out for 3 months is idiotic in my opinion. The same buzz would have been there if they had announced it 2 weeks before.

I’m not real sure what to think of Hank Haney all the time. Sometimes he comes off as a real straight shooter with a lot of class – then he turns around and spouts off like a spoiled child crying when someone touches one of his toys.

Haney was on Sirius/XM with Matt Adams on Monday and he said he will not be “dishing” on Tiger – he will be talking about things he knows about only. So it sounds like it will, hopefully, be a golf book about Tiger’s practice habits, tournament preparation, mental states and practices during tournaments, etc….which is bound to disappoint the tabloid media. Tiger and Haney didn’t spend all that much time together outside of the first year or so of their relationship. Haney was there when TW needed him.

Haney has always said that he knew nothing of the things that turned into a scandal a few years ago. He has no confidentiality agreement with TW, so he has no reason to lie. The only thing I can think of that would change that would be a flair up of Haney’s childish side over how things ended between them.

Having said that, Jaime Diaz from Golf Digest, and Sports Illustrated before that, is writing the book. I have no doubt in my mind that Diaz will be pushing Haney for dirt at every possible occassion.

Yeah, I agree, Court…I am of two minds about Hank Haney. He definitely is like a coin: two definite and different sides.

Question #2

What the heck does the title mean ?

I read it refers to what Tiger called his wild hook off the tee, the miss he wanted to eliminate with Haney.

It’s a bizarre title. Just listened to an interview with Haney and he said it had to do with big misses on shots and putts, as well as missed opportunities in other areas.

Kind of a weak title – maybe he’ll change it between now and then.
