Where’s the Rory love for Yani Tseng? She’s won three majors, you know

The golf world is all a-twitter about Rory McIlroy’s dazzling U.S. Open performance at Congressional Country Club last week, and with good reason. The kid played lights out and carries himself with just the right combination of self-confidence and humility to make him an instant fan fave.

A_mediumBut with three-time major champ Yani Tseng, 22, set to tee it up Thursday in the women’s second major of the season, the LPGA Championship, the buzz accompanying her achievements is so low-key as to make little more noise than the flapping of butterfly wings in a distant meadow.

Did we mention that world No. 1 Tseng has three majors to her credit? And that she’s the same age as Rory Mac? Or that she has a shot at becoming the youngest golfer (male or female) to win four majors? That a win at this year’s U.S. Women’s Open would give her the career grand slam? If she can achieve that feat, will anyone proclaim it the Yani Slam, or is such a title only reserved for the guys (see: Tiger Slam)?

Tseng, who toils in the near-anonymity of women’s golf, declined to take the bait when asked about the obvious disparity between the reaction to her multiple accomplishments and McIlroy’s sole major win.

"That's one I haven't won yet, the U.S. Open," Tseng said, diplomatically, to reporters Tuesday. "I was very excited to see [McIlroy’s victory]. I think it's great for golf."

Where's the recognition for all that Yani Tseng has accomplished on the golf course? (Photo: AFP/Getty Images)

Star-divide

Indeed, the self-effacing Tseng said that McIlroy’s run-away win was an inspiration to her as she readied for three women’s majors in six weeks.

"To see the young people winning the U.S. Open by eight shots, that's really amazing," she said. "I watch on TV, I tell myself, because we have U.S. Open coming up next two weeks..., maybe I can do that, too."

Her response raised another interesting issue. When golfdom discusses the 20-somethings who are making yesterday’s stars like Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, and even Tiger Woods, look like huffing, puffing geezers, why is Tseng never part of the convo? The woman owns seven career victories, including four straight wins this season, and she’s relegated to a line item in your daily newspaper.

LPGA star Cristie Kerr is one golfer who’s not afraid to tell it like it is. "A lot of the world doesn’t know who we [LPGA golfers] are," Kerr, who will try to defend her title this week in Pittsford, N.Y., told reporters Wednesday. "That’s a problem."

It’s an especially huge headache for a tour struggling to ink corporate sponsors and fill up its playing calendar. At least for this week, Kerr, Tseng, and the rest of the top women golfers in the world who tee off at Locust Hill Country Club will have Golf Channel broadcasting their play in high-def and real time.

Perhaps, then, Tseng will begin to gain the recognition she so richly deserves.

"I tell myself if I play better and play good," she said about the lack of attention her feats have received in the U.S., "more people will put attention on me."

huge fan of "Yummy" Tseng.

it’s sad for women golf, but she might need 20 majors and wear mini skirts more often to draw the “masses” and sponsors attention toward the lpga. primo, she isn’t from the US, secundo she isn’t from Europe, tertio she’s from that scary far east we don’t know much about…sad.. cause she’s a great asset to golf, in addition to being super Yummy..

Nope - builder on holiday

scaffolding stays. Tres boring. No play until tomorrow (non-playing friend staying since Monday).

I’m working on it – gotta be real accurate with those pins – it’s art & science combined you know.

It is human nature to root for people who are the most similar to you.

I am quite certain that a big deal is made of Yani Tseng in her native Taiwan by her fellow Taiwanese. But for most Americans, Asians, especially those with limited English skills are completely foreign. If Paula Creamer for instance had done what Yani has done, then we would be talking Nancy Lopez type of hype. Rory is getting a lot of hype now because he is young and has vast potential, he plays on the men’s tour, and while he is a European, he speaks English as his native tongue. But if Rory were an American I’m sure that he would have over double the number of endorsements he has now.

Agreed..

If Fowler had won the US Open like that, Woods would have all but been forgotten. But there is another side to the women’s game. Saint makes a good point about the mini skirts etc. In an effort to appeal to the masses, the girls and the LPGA push this sexy image thing untill one cannot take them seriously, like Gulbis. Lopez won tournaments, Sorenstam and Webb won too. That is what gains real respect, not Creamer and Gulbis doing calendars and photo shoots almost as much as they play. For me, Tseng is streets ahead of the glamour girls of the LPGA, Lewis and Kerr have more respect from me than Gulbis, who is very pretty, but doesn’t win. Because she is plastered on all the ads for the LPGA, you would think she was one of the top winners. That, I find sad and desperate, from the LPGA.

by Easingwold on Jun 23, 2011 2:56 AM EDT up reply actions

It may be sad and desperate, but it is the direct result of the Brandi Chastain and Women's beach Volleyball phenomenon.

How much pub and air time did Chastain, Misty May and Kerri Walsh get for their sports solely through their sex appeal? And don’t tell me that all the people were watching women’s beach volleyball because they like volleyball. That’s like people who say they read Playboy for the articles. Indoor volleyball did not get the same level of hype. The LPGA has seen the result of these events, and they know that particularly in women’s sports, showing a little skin never hurts their popularity. It is definitely a sad thing for women’s sports, but the problem lies with the fans and viewers who are that shallow.

Yes she does

She is also a fantastic golfer, that’ll do me.

Hi Sweet Gummy Bear....Fluent?...are you sure? Easy speaks fluent English....

even tho Yani went to College in the US, she speaks VERY PASSABLE ENGLISH for an Asian….Listen to her interviews….I have nothing against the way she speaks….At least her Pro Am partners can talk to her, unlike some of the girls….I admire her golf….STUB

The 800 pound gorilla in the room is this

Women’s golf is not, has never been, and probably never will be as popular as men’s golf. It just isn’t.

Really, they’re having a major this week. And how much do you think that it will move the needle in the golf world, much less the sports world? Very little. The sports world globally? None.

That’s just the way it is.

You can blame marketing, you could blame the networks (incorrectly) you could blame the audience, or who the heck ever you want but that doesn’t change the fact that women’s golf does not matter very much at all to people world wide.

And don’t shoot me, I’m just the messenger pointing out the obvious.

Repeat after me

Must not shoot gorillas, must not shoot gorillas ;o)

I’m afraid CB is right, although it would help a little if more US players were to win on a regular basis – more TV coverage, more sponsorship, etc.

by WendyUK on Jun 23, 2011 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I put it down to the fact

for every 20 women players at any club, there are 100 men players, therefore, Mens golf would naturally be 5 times more popular, IMO.

by Easingwold on Jun 23, 2011 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

Charles has some points there, but I attribute it to lack of womens interest in sports in general...

A big deal was made to have womens sports equal to mens in the College ranks…Tital 9 they called it….Spend the same amount on women as they did men…..There are 2 major sports in College that generate revenue….Football first, than Basketball…Almost eveything else is a lost leader, including Golf….men’s and womens…..Last stats I read, there were more FOREIGN LADIES in the College programs then US…..Wendy was the exception, not the rule…I don’t think it’s much different today…

Here in the US, everyone is so concerned about the Kids getting fatter….However, in Grade School, they used to have a class in athletics….Called it PT….girls and boys all played games and exercised…..no more….If the interest isn’t started early, there won’t be any later…I see this in my Grand Daughters….a real shame….I put it down to Parents not doing more to Push the kids into some form or Athletics…..Jist MHO…..STUB

I'm afraid what you say is true as well

I only have one female friend who plays sport (hockey) and none who watch sport. Well, there is one who watches rugby but as she had a somewhat risque calendar in her kitchen (even after it was out of date), I fear she wasn’t a purist.

I don't think there was many women in the arena in Rome either (apart from some christians

sent to the lions..) But i’ve heard they found remains of female gladiators in Britain..always ahead of their time those Brits! :-)

One possible 'gladiator'

but as no weapons found in the grave, could just have been a strapping lady!

However, until recently we had Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni tribe (S.England) on our coinage. She led a rebellion against the Roman Empire, defeating the Ninth Legion and destroying Colchester (then the Roman capital of Britain) London & St. Albans before being herself defeated. Always depicted as a redhead of course!

you got me interested..

apparently there was female gladiators in Rome…
