RIP Waggle Room?
It seems that WR is or has, become somewhat... shall we say redundant?
Like it or not, these blogs, rely on the contributions and comments from Joe Public and that has dried up to the proverbial trickle. Why? Is it the content? I doubt it, because we could always find something salient to natter about, no matter what the particular post had to offer.
It was said that there were various emails sent to the powers that be from the general population, complaining about some of the posts and tone of those posts from the regulars. I wonder what they are saying now? It seems that the regular posters have gone absentee and I wonder if anyone cares? That's sad, because I liked this blog, particularly those regulars who made the site what it was.
For me, I didn't like the way we or in particular one, was treated in a one off instance where perhaps passion overcame good sense. No matter how many appeals (and they were meritorious and numerous) were made from the regulars, it was to no avail. What really rankles though, is that we were not addressed about the issue - apart from one vitriolic comment on a particular thread, directed at someone who has been nothing other than a shining light on this blog. In retrospect, that comment was no better, or worse, than the one that saw the regular I'm talking about, expelled.
I don't write this lightly, because I do appreciate the effort put into the running of this site. I have my own blog and I do know how much blood, sweat and tears go into it, but.... when something like this happens in this world we live in, it's far too easy just to abdicate and go elsewhere. We are also of a world and an age, where no one enjoys being subjugated, let alone put up with it.
So.... where are we WR ? I would rather like to have the status quo restored, but I guess it comes down to the head of the blog. Charles, what say you?

I’m with you most of the way, chip. It’s sad to see what has been a great place to talk about golf (and just about anything else that came to mind) – but I can’t join you in placing any of this on Charles. The situation that keeps coming up about a regular had a vey clear public addressing before things came to a head and the line got crossed.. I believe there was even a post from that regular in the post with the public warning. Not sure why you think CB should have brought anything to us on something that was his call and his alone.
This situation is not going to resolve itself until the centerpiece of the entire controversy gets fixed, and we know Charles has not been given the authority to do that – which leaves us with the problem of not being able to comment because we would violate the warning. We’re all in a tough spot. If we tell the truth, CB has to pull the trigger. If we say nothing, the site continues to wither.
What needs to happen is for SBN to untie CB’s hands and let him run the site as he sees fit, not just as he is allowed right now by SBN.

A little oblique, Court
but I think I catch your drift.
Waggle Room WILL continue because we are “Simply the best”
If UK & Ireland can agree to look forward and not back to what we have done to each other over the years, then harsh words on WR are surely the least of our worries. (Sorry to introduce that topic but as I’m Anglo-Irish I have been much moved by recent events).
Court, for me this is primarily about Handi's expulsion
and the way it was handled. Adam and I had a discussion that rambled on for hours about Handi’s expulsion and that was after a comment from me addressed directly to Charles and answered by Adam. The short version was that I was told to voice any disquiet to Charles in an email. I wasn’t prepared to do that, as I felt that WR should be what it claims to be – a community and anything of this nature should be addressed on the board for all to see.
Charles has made only one reference to the whole saga and that was directed towards Wendy in a very churlish and actually quite nasty, public comment.
It all boils down to this for me and I’m only speaking for myself here, a lot of the regulars appealed to Charles to reinstate Handi. We were totally ignored and not afforded even the courtesy of a reply. That Court, is what really rankles the most.
I understand – and not contacting CB directly is your perogative – but either way the facts don’t change – the warning was clear and public – handi even posted in it, so ignorance isn’t a defense. I don’t understand the vitriol against CB for doing what he said he had to do. What Handi wrote clearly crossed the line – it doesn’t matter what any of us said in his support. since none of us can speak for him. CB made a simple request – knock off the personal attacks. Other people making excuses for him doesn’t mean he is sorry. Getting mad about Handi doesn’t help CB with the real problem.

When Ryan Ballangee moved on to greener pastures you got Emily Kay… A rush of parochial articles about New England golf. Now, court follows Ryan at MSNBC and the guy I “love to hate” progolf, Dick Smith, is fawning over at TGC… Waggleroom MAY continue if SB Nation determines it’s worth it. Wendy, you and CnP have been a pleasure to read. I hope you find a place to express your thoughts.
I’m alright with it.

So, the hits are what matters
and not what the “community members” have to say? Nice to finally see what the bottom line is and what really matters most to you.

“The bottom line”? Sometimes I think you just complain for the sake of complaining. Charles has said this multiple times on this blog: for every regular commenter who dislikes how this blog is going, there are 10 other readers who enjoy it. And yes; anyone who has ever ran a successful blog knows that it is page views… not commenters… that keep a site up and running.
A ‘community’ is something that readers of a blog establish on their own. When Charles brought me on as a writer, he did not instruct me to help appease the 8 – 10 regular commenters on this site. He asked me to help contribute to a blog where thousands of people visit each day. The same goes for Emily (who was just named one of the internet’s top female golf bloggers, by the way) and I am sure Charles follows the same logic.
Speaking only for myself, I actually appreciate the quiet around here at times. I would rather have no comments on a blog post than 30 “debbie downer” posts any day.

I have very rarely complained about anything on this blog before this. You may want to check that out, along with your facts before you make those sort of sweeping statements.
As far as the second paragraph is concerned, fair enough and I understand your point, although I don’t necessarily agree with it.
As far as your last paragraph is concerned, then you may well have your wish. My wish is for some sort of interaction with the man who runs this blog. He has been conspicuous by his absence with all of this – perhaps we don’t rate his attention. Pity about that.
It was more of a general “you” than specifically only you, chip. But I guess we can’t appease everyone here.

Very true Adam
Adam, I like this place and I like the people who post here – even you:)
I would like for it to be what it was not so long ago. For that to happen, then I think that there needs to be a little more interaction and a little more leeway and consideration given to everyone, posters and writers alike. That’s my bottom line I guess.

Chip is correct
8-10 regulars are like the customer the does all the buying, the rest are all window shoppers.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body" jumpn
Not really
If only 8-10 regulars came to this site, SB Nation would have either fired the current administration or shut the site down all together. Advertisers want to see a volume of different people (or IP addresses in this case) in order to validate their paying for ad space.
If you don’t believe me, try finding the Trailing Tiger site Ryan opened a little under 2 years ago.
A pragmatic view indeed, Adam
regarding the page views, and does it occur to you how many of those hits are from the commenters in the first place? I I disagree with you that a community is something that readers of a blog establish on their own. It requires interesting, thought-provoking, sometimes controversial, sometimes funny, etc, etc articles to invite comment and above all some interaction from the writers of said articles.
“Appease”? “Appreciate the quiet”? I’m not sure you realise quite how contemptuous you sound towards the commenters. At least you interact – albeit usually defensively.
Does this sound like a “debbie downer”, cos your post certainly did to me?
I might be wrong, however I think that the page views themselves come from unique users (i.e., a new user per page view). I’ll check with Charles on this just for my own information to be sure, however any blog I’ve run counts each IP address as a unique visitor that day. Again, this may not be the case for WR.
And Wendy, I can certainly see your point of view in regard to my “appease” comments. But honestly, there were a few days when no commenters made any posts shortly following the “Handi Incident” and it was nice to get a reprieve for a bit from all the negativity.

While I regularly frequent this site, I don’t know if I would be considered a regular. With that, I may be missing some important facts.
With that said, the gnashing of teeth and furrowing of brows regarding the health and future of Waggle Room seems ridiculous to me. Was there a lack of posts or comments during the Masters? We are in a somewhat dead period of the US golf calendar with the US Open about a month away (yes, I’m sure there are vital and exciting tournaments on the Senior Tour, LPGA and Euro Tour, but those don’t move the needle like the US PGA Tour, at least when it comes to posts and comments). I would bet business will pick up around mid-June.
As for Emily (whom I’ve never met and have no particular urge to), if I were her, I would have told Waggle Room to shove it long ago. The vitriol she receives for basically keeping the lights on at WR is totally unwarranted. Wading through the first five or ten replies to her posts about how much she stinks is tiresome. I’ve had spirited differences of opinion with many a poster here (court, em66, Easingworld, I’m cyber-waving at you :-)) and I’ve never been subject to the kind of personal insults she has.
I come the Waggle Room more than any other golf site because, to turn a phrase, they return my calls. I (or anyone) can write what they are thinking about and it gets a place at the table that doesn’t happen at geoffshackelford, Devil Ball Golf, or even Ryan’s new corporate digs (by the way, for anyone complaining about the New England-centric turn this blog has made, I surely remember a central-Maryland tinge in the ‘good old days’).
If Waggle Room has been poisoned for you, so be it. If not, if you want to ‘save’ it, the best thing would be to hit the FanPosts button and start talking.

Ok – you may not be “NOORRRRMM !!” – but you’re a regular. :-) The difference between you and Emily is that you are clear when talking about opinions vs news, you don’t just ignore questions and challenges, you question and challenge when something someone else has written doesn’t seem right, and you get in on the conversations….Adam and CB do this as well. Oh – and getting your facts straight is important to you.
If at first you don't secede, try try again
There are two other important difference between myself and Emily
I do this for fun; Emily, I imagine, receives some sort of remuneration for her work.
And because I do this for fun, I can post and much or as little as I want. The real world can get in the way of me posting (my last FanPost was over a month ago) without the blog screeching to a halt. If Emily didn’t post for a regular amount of time, tumbleweeds would blow past your laptop when the site opened.
you're not helping your argument :-D
very true – which means that if you were getting paid to do something like this you would be EXTRA careful to get things right and to engage the people you’re posting for. And the idea that she is the only one around who could be posting stories regularly ? Not a chance. The reason for the slowdown around here was the changeover from RB to CB which brought a lag during the “what’s going on here” stage.
If at first you don't secede, try try again
My argument is Emily plays a different role than RB (or CB for that matter). Although she pens the most posts, she doesn’t seem to be the soul of Waggle Room. That job seems to fall to CB and Adam. So the job Ryan was doing has been split amongst the new regime.
As for getting things right, I imagine it is hard to get things right all the time. I couldn’t get a football fields length of right if I wrote a post regarding Pettersen’s match play win Sunday. Those who are contracted to say something about every major happening in the world of golf have a tough road to hoe, and that is without caustic comments from the peanut gallery.
No worries, twonuse
We will agree to disagree. For the record I kept my promise not to post in Emily’s articles.

by the way, did you get to see any of the Bernard Hopkins fight on Sat. Night. I’ve been in Ireland so I did not but I hear he kicked some Butt. He beat a very good light heavy from Canada who was undefeated, who also fought Hopkins to a draw in their first fight. My g/f recorded it at home so I can see it when I return home next week.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body" jumpn
I saw the replay Sunday
It was like watching a grand champion play chess against someone who just learned the game. Hopkins pulled every trick in the book out (including some illegal tricks) to win. Now he says he will fight until 50. And since no one has laid a whupping on him in over a decade (which you can’t say about Roy Jones Jr,; we may have to hold a telethon for him to raise enough money to stop fighting), he may make it.
heres the problem....
As I see it…The blogg is not defined, iti s a combination of copy and paste info that can be read on yahoo sports, msn sports, cnn sports, etc etc, slight bitchin’ about Tiger and other such over bitched subjects. WR lacks origionality and spice, and sad to say it probably died a long time ago and forgot to be buried. Now the good news is bloggs can be reincarnated, if the desire is there…! But to honest all this copy and paste news is torture, its a blogg let the honesta nd down to earth opinions flow with the freedom of speech the internet has so blessed us with. IMHO

something to consider – unless you are writing about something you did or witnessed in your life, or if you are at a golf happening (since this is a golf site), witness a single moment happening on TV, or are paid to be on site for an event, there is almost nothing original in the factual world. Most blogs run on commentary about 2nd or 3rd hand news.

First of all Chip, thanks for starting this peticular Fan Post. It needed to be said. I have not been coming in as much myself due to the fact that much has changed and the fun of it seems to have vanished. It’s getting tough to have an opinion without being berrated from above for it. I will admit it is my busy season and I don’t have a lot of blogging time from April to October, but in the past I always managed to MAKE the time for waggleroom as I looked forward to coming in here and speak to many whom I have made friends with, em66, wendy, stub, royko, handi, easingwold, tigerhead et al. There are plenty of SBN sites that are lightly used (relatively)
In my humble opinion, much of building a community is having a proprietor (or proprietors) that write well, and add nuance and depth to the stories people want to read about – I think it’s the nuance and depth that provokes debate and discussion. I think it helps if that person has a real in-depth understanding of the sport that may elude even those of us that believe we are “golf smart” – and can communicate and debate those understandings in a non-defensive tone.
In addition, every site has it’s own personality, and it’s own cast of characters – so I can’t say what’s “right” and “wrong”. Some are just more accessible to new readers than others.
This is not really meant as an indictment of Emily, just as constructive criticism. It feels she’s more of a caretaker here than an avid voice attempting to build this particular site into something special. To be fair, it could be she’s still getting her feet wet.
Some sites rely heavily on assistant authors to create intriguing content. Perhaps golf just doesn’t have the compelling storylines that will attract the masses, but I have a hard time believing a golf site on SBN couldn’t and shouldn’t be fairly successful. Ultimately, it’s all about supplying a compelling and entertaining topic and letting your readers take the ball and run with it.
Just my .02, as a regular reader but only a very occasional poster.

Things changed
when Stew Mulligan left. He had a well organized blog, both well tended and attended with golf coverage coming first. Ballangee thought crude four letter words were needed to express himself.
Self promotion was awkward to read. I was offended and turned off. This site formerly was a good source of golf news concerning PGA Tour, with LPGA getting a high level of attention.

Don't worry, nothing will be allright.
Heres the confusion
Now I love a cute skirt on the Tee box as much as the rest of the hetro’s on the golf course, but sincerely, and in all fairness, there is an LPGA blogg with the same sponsor, and so I last added, in my wierd maths, about 60% of the posts by Her Majesty are LPGA related, and thats ok, cause its cute and all, but isn’t it over lapping? I mean I click on the left menue and I get it again under a diffirent blogg heading….so I ask you…hell WTF, now Wendy is gonna think I am a MCP with a thing for whats her name…Ed I wasnlt arround before long and only got here to the end of Ballangee and a bit of OMP and i do remember it wwas fun, entertaining and evens oemn usefull info, as well as good banter, a little name calling and some solid advise, but then it got all formal like and insulting and what not so I lost interest, till I popped in to see what as the general concesus of Poulters iwn and saw this blog…

I like the LPGA articles as I don’t get to see the tournaments on TV over here, but I would really, really like to see more PGA/Euro tournament articles as well. I try not to moan about the absence of these articles too much , ‘cos I very much suspect the response would be “Write them yourself then!” In my defense I would contest that I don’t meet the criteria so eloquently put in the Otis29 post.

Apparently not, Easing
The no. of hits to the site will continue – the people who take the time to read and comment are an utter nuisance at best.
Okay, You Have Your Say For Two Days, Now I Will Have Mine
I’ve let this discussion develop for a couple of days while I watched it and puposely did not comment. I wanted to see what the true colors of some people are, and they are shining brightly in a few cases. Thanks to all who took the time to comment, especially to those who chose to not use this comment thread as a platform for thinly disguised ad hominem attacks on the VOLUNTEERS who take the time to create the site in the first place. Without them, there is no Waggle Room.
First of all, why was handi banned?
For repeatedly violating a very clearly stated policy of not attacking posters or other commentators. I warned you what would happen, and it did.
I will repeat that verbatim to you:
http://www.waggleroom.com/2011/3/1/2022380/a-note-to-the-commentators-enough
I have had it with a number of you. I am sick and tired of reading your personal attacks on Emily Kay every morning in the comments of this blog. Some of you seem to believe that you are free to fire tasteless personal insults in the comments at her with impunity and that they are going to go unnoticed either by me or by her.
To begin with it is cowardly and rather sophomoric to hide behind a screen name and issue toxic screeds that are often factually incorrect against someone because you don’t like the way that they write a blog.
Do you not have anything better to do with your apparently pitiful life than to take out your frustrations for your obvious shortcomings than to post your hatred towards someone you don’t know on an online site?
And why are you not man enough to sign YOUR OWN NAME to your work?
Is it that you are not proud of your hatred?
If that’s your mission in life, then your world is small and ugly. I would feel sorry for you if there were any room for feelings other than contempt.
Or are you — and quite frankly, I doubt this with every fiber of my being — such a great reporter yourself that you feel it your duty to correct wrong where you see it? If so, don’t fall in the pool, Narcissus.
They are not, and the next ad hominem attack that is issued WILL RESULT IN THE USER BEING BANNED from making comments here.
THAT IS NOT A THREAT. IT IS A PROMISE.
Policy broken, promise kept.
I suppose you would not mind that so much were it a user attacking you constantly and purposely, Chip? If that happened, you wouldn’t ask me to intervene? You would say, ah well, that’s okay, that’s their right of free expression? That something clearly and emphatically stated as a thing not to do was okay and that any promises of repercussions were merely hollow?
That’s a major ground rule: play by the Golden Rule. Or don’t play.
If that’s not satisfactory, then I am sorry. This site will not become the Second Coming of the Golf Channel Discussion Board. Period.
Secondly, if you think that as a commentator you are the “lifeblood” of a blog, then you are almost certainly thinking too highly of yourself. Important, yes. Lifeblood? Hardly. That statement is supported by the numbers, that is, the logs and the analyses of this site and every other notable website. I know it is true for this website, I have run the Alexa numbers several times myself. The results are in line with what is seen across many forms of media. Even politicians assign a statistical correlation to communications they receive versus the demographics of their voters. Television accumulates its ratings in the same way.
That said, while important, commentators are not what drives people here to read what’s written, instead, in the case of Waggle Room, it had begun to drive them away. That is unacceptable. Especially in light of point 1: play by the Golden Rule.
Finally, oddly, since the vitriole of the commentaria has died down, the number of hits to the site has increased.
Go figure.
The simple fact is that 88.7% of all the unique page views to this site come from people who are not commentators.
Contradictory and ambiguous, Charles...
But such is your right. 88.7% percent does not reflect a come back or repeat, it reflects a browse, these are not numbers that show a success or demean of a blogg. IMHO, what reflects the success of a blogg is the reflection and comments of those who take the time to actually comment. At some point I believe you have to decide if you are, in fact, a blogg or an information site…
My name is roy weltman, my email is royweltman@gmail.com, and those who I have developed an online relationship with know this, and picking pseudo names is both fun and protecting oneself from unwanted spam, identity theft, etc, etc.
Should your desire be for this to be a blogg then my suggestion is deal with the critique. CHip opened a discussion, and you should sincerely be more interested in what people are saying than banashing them for being blunt!
By reading your last line, as I to assume that you prefer viewers of this site to remain silent and greatfull?
p.s. glad you noticed….:)
"If it doesn't work, you are trying to hard."

I'm disappointed, but not surprised
that you repeated your hysterical rant in full – “note to the commentators – enough”. I would have been embarassed to repeat anything other than "The next ad hominen attack that is issued will result in the user being banned from making comments here. We know why Handi was banned – we simply asked you to consider that he had experienced as bad a year as you have and to cut him some slack for those reasons . Indeed, your words to me (although you have apologised in private) were as nasty if not nastier than anything said to Emily – but I cut you some slack for your tribulations.
As for the hypocritical statement “while important, commentators”, etc, I think you have made it perfectly clear where we stand. You might want to go back to reading the comments welcoming you to managing this particular website and the sincere (they were) intentions you had at the time.
Thanks Wendy, you’ve made my decision easier.

1. I wrote a post about how I felt. All I wanted and asked for, was some interaction from you – one short quick response would have sufficed.
2. I would not ask you to intervene on my behalf in any way, shape or form. I’m a big girl and can look after myself quite nicely.
3. I have never suggested that we regulars were the lifeblood of the site, only that we were, as your yourself have said, important and that perhaps we were being treated with – is disdain too strong a word? Perhaps, but it’s close.
Finally, good luck with your ideas for a a new and improved WR. This is a good blog and hopefully will be better still with an infusion of new ideas and content.
And you miss the point
I welcome comments, and enjoy reading them. I also enjoy the discussion and banter — so long as it is not a bitter attack that never seems to end. I have banned precisely one user, and that for doing exactly what we stated was unacceptable after we pointed out that the behavior was intolerable and would be dealt with. Your point about preferring viewers to remain silent and grateful is off the mark.
Secondly, you are quibbling numbers within numbers and you are making assumptions about repeat visitors that hold no water.
As for “dealing with the critique” I think that Adam, Emily and myself had to constantly endure that for months, thanks.

Blimey - I was just asking where you had gone
Wasn’t I Easing? Spooky! The matchplay was great. When you think of how many top ranking players were there, plus 4 Major Champions, disappointing how little coverage it was given. So wanted Luke to win as well – nothing against Poulter as such, but Luke ran out of puff. He’s going to have to win something on the PGA Tour to be appreciated by the media (although he has plenty of US fans). All we got on blogs (not this one) was about Poulter’s tumble and loss of platinum & diamond marker.
Anyway, welcome home, Scrums.
Thanks Wendy..................
From what I saw Luke was unlucky, just a few inches here and there and he was in trouble plus on Golf Channel they also reckoned that there was gamesmanship on Poulters part.Saw some LPGA coverage as well.Suzann played well and beat some good uns……Tseng,Choi and Kerr.Tee to green she was the best, her short putting was streaky but she holed some long ones, winning quite a few matches on the 18th.Only aggravation too many commercial breaks with Rocco Mediate espousing the merits of Dicks Sporting Goods!!!!!!!!!!!
Whats going on with the blog exactly?? Only got back today, too tired to go and read everything.

Going to have to read it for yourself, Scrums
& form your own opinion. Didn’t see any of LPGA but followed it on-line. Didn’t read anything about gamesmanship on Poults behalf, but some of his iron shots were deadly as the match went on and Luke’s divine putting stroke had gone. Sleep tight and join us tomorrow.
You are such a hardass:0)................ok I'll read tomorrow.

1978
Lucky you Easing, During the winter of 1978, I was in the worst snow storm the North east had seen in decades. Officialy called the Blizzard of 78. http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Northeastern_United_States_Blizzard_of_1978
Transportation of all modes was at a stand still and forbidden for 3 days. We received 3 1/2 feet of snow over a two day period of time. I actually spent 3 days and nights sleeping on workout mats at my boxing gym.
