SandBagging....Is There Such a Thing?

SandBagging….Is There Such a Thing? I’m not so sure. In my experience, golfers prefer the bragging rights associated with a lower-than-actual handicap to the monetary and hardware rewards of a higher-than-actual handicap. In the (male) golf groups I’ve been involved in, the social pecking order has usually been set by handicap index….the lower the index, the higher the caste of the player.

How many bad rounds are not recorded because under the 10 out of 20 rule “they’re not going to count” anyway? This common practice quickly leads to a lower index.

In male golf groups, most of the handicaps are lower than they should be. All you really need to do to have an advantage is record all your scores, and your (actual) handicap will give you a slight advantage over others’ too-low handicaps.

Does this happen in women’s groups? I wonder.

It may be different in UK

Once someone hands in 3 cards to obtain an handicap, most people then play competitions and hand in cards, where the committee handle handicap calculations, so you can be pretty sure of the accuracy.

Outside of competitions, however, I suspect there is both bragging and sandbagging!

Can’t satisfy your curiousity re female players, however, as my husband is my golf-playing partner so knows my game too well, and I don’t play with any other ladies. Perhaps Chip or Diane can give us their views?

Wendy darlin....The best thing you have in the UK is that you must have that handicap card

to get on most courses….Here in the Colonies, all they have to do is walk up to the cash register , plunk down their money and go play….I have been behind many, many Golfers who shouldn’t be allowed on a par 3….The Asians are the worst….that’s why there are 5-6 hr rounds of golf…..Most of these players, have no Idea what tee box to play from….They all want to go to the Tips….I paid my $ and I want to see all of the course mentality….There are so many reasons, It would take a week to give them all to you….I do agree, there is both bragging and sandbagging going on.

When there were still Calcuttas being run by a lot of the clubs, that’s when sandbagging really was in it’s heyday….It got so bad, that I know of several guys who were forbidden to enter them, and had their names circulated to keep them out…..Claim a 12 and play to about a 4….These are in the same catagory as those that use the FOOT Mashie during a round…..I think Chip is still sleeping off the Jet Lag….STUB

True among better players

Ego runs rampant in golf among single digit players. There is far more reverse sandbagging going on than sandbagging.

In hackier groups, guys that play once a week, handicaps are probably more legit because 1) they don’t really care what their index is and 2) they are just posting one score a week and do it out of habit directly following their round.

There are many guys that are really a 6 that say they are a “3 or 4” than there are guys that are a 20, but say they are a 15.

Green, You mayhave a point there,

but the group that falls into the 6 and says 3-4 is a lot smaller than the 15-20 handicappers….I was talking to a Professional Gambler, and this was years, and I’m talking years ago….He said that he always found it interestimg. the people that would kind of brag about how much they had lost, but you never heard about the winnings…It was almost like a badge of honor to lose…

I just wonder, what percentage of golfers never even post a score….I question wether they even know they should…..jist MHO….STUB

Hi STUB!

We don’t bother to put in cards any more, but to keep it honest, we use the average of our last 3 games as our unofficial handicap for the next game. If someone joins us for a game, that’s the no. we give them if they ask. I wouldn’t play a complete stranger for money though!
