The 2011 Masters: Augusta National Golf Club’s Early Years

Photo

In exactly one month from today (April 7, 2011), the 2011 Masters Tournament is set to tee-off at one of the most heralded and recognizable courses in the history of golf: Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA.  Defending champion Phil Mickelson will join some of the best players in the world to once again compete for the ever-important Green Jacket... and not to mention a hefty share of the $7.5 million purse.  Perhaps the only aspect of the Masters that can surpass the history of the event is the course itself, which will once again host this year's installment as it has since 1934.

Star-divide

Known as the "Augusta National Invitation" in that year, Horton Smith captured the first official Masters title at Augusta which earned him $1000 out of a $5000 total purse.  In 1939 the name of the tournament was permanently changed to "The Masters".  In the early years of the event, players at Augusta National began their round on the 10th hole and finished on the 9th.  However, in 1935 the switch to the course's original layout was made permanent and continues to this day.

The history of the course itself, however, dates back to 1930 in the form of a vision dreamt by Bobby Jones just prior to his retirement from championship golf.  As the story is reported on the Masters' website, Jones teamed up with Clifford Roberts, whom he had met many times throughout the 1920s and who shared Jones' vision of building a world-class golf course.  After a few brief conversations between the two men, a mutual agreement was reached to construct the course in Augusta, Georgia.

Jones and Roberts decided that instead of littering the grounds of what would become Augusta National with bunkers and other hazards, they would make the most out of the property's natural landscape which includes a vast number of mounds, hills, and valleys.  Jones wanted this concept of golf course architecture to "make a contribution to the game as well as give expression to his ideas about golf course design".  Original plans for the golf club were to only have it open for play during the winter months.

The property itself was originally named Fruitland Nurseries and was purchased from owner Thomas Barrett, Jr.  As the Masters website explains, this property was once an Indigo plantation purchased by a Belgian Baron named Louis Mathieu Edouard Berckmans in 1857.  In 1858, Berckmans and his son formed a partnership that would eventually bring numerous trees and plants from all over the globe and placed them throughout the property while still a nursery.  Included in this project were thousands of magnolia plants which would ultimately become a staple of the Augusta National history and one of the most recognizable aspects of the grounds in present-day.

At the selling price of $70,000, Jones and Roberts purchased the land and decided to begin construction with renowned Scottish course architect Dr. Alister Mackenzie, especially since he shared the views of Jones in regard to allowing the national landscape and contours define the shape and look of the course.  Mackenzie had also sparked Jones' attention by already having two impressive course designs under his belt in California: Cypress Point and Pasatiempo.  In 1933, the course was complete and opened for play.

Very good article Adam

Nice job. More of this type of thing in Waggleroom is what I and many others would probably like to see more of. The history of our beloved game is so important and should not be forgotten. A good learning curve for todays generation who only ride the current bandwagon.

A month from today isn’t April 27 – The Masters does start a month from today, though – April 07

Nice work on this one Chi-Town

Augusta National is indeed a very lovely place…I especially like it when the Principals at the club go out on the first fairway and raise the batan like an orchestra conductor and yell ’BLOOM DAMM YA" and all the flowers and trees spring to life….an incredable sight….STUB

Augusta is located in a suprisingly sketchy area

The property itself is amazing, but it’s surrounded by junk.

Can't spell "Colletti" without LOL.

The course does look amazing on TV

this year we will get it in 3-D TV, but unfortunatly for me, my TV is a bit old for that. I still prefer Peter Alliss and his team of Ken Brown and Wayne Grady with the BBC, but ever powerful Sky TV has got it this year. When Alliss goes, I fear so will the Open on the BBC.

One of the few courses in the world every golfer would play if he could. Still, at least I’ve played the Old Course !

Easy......

Why would you want to play an “old” course, when there are so many great new courses you can play???…..: )

The Saints were the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS for a year...hope I don't have to wait another 44 years for #2....WHO DAT!......:)

Duffer......Nice article.

The scenery is beautiful and the “landscape and contours” are breathtaking, but it also helps to have 4 hundred gazillion dollars to spend each year on the course. Is it true they hand paint each individual blade of grass??……: )

Easy...EM egg-sag-ya-rates...It ain't Gazillins..but it is a healthy

pile….Yup, dye the water blue…They pour some of that bad English Ale into it, till the brown turns blue…hahahaha….And don’t forget, the Tour kicks in a hefty amount to get the course ready to play….

What they do Eas, is the Pro…Club Manager…Chefs and Course Supt. all sit down…work up a budget for the year and divide by the number of Members…They get 30 days to pay the bill…They always have a good plus reserve to carry forward also….and don’t forget, it’s only open for play a small part of the year….That cuts down on a lot of the maintaince….STUB

The Disney Land of Golf

Eh, Adam F…..No doubt America’s Corporate play ground. None the less a beautiful venue and has offered some of the most dramatic golf in the games history. Insight to the “historical” side makes good reading. You know what might be a unique side bar would to do a story on the agronomy and the gardening; what special features to keep greens and turf in great shape ie drainage, heated greens, how many gardeners, their challenges and who is responsible to keep it so immaculately clean. It is America’s golf mecca.

Ease...that's why it's call a Private Club...You must have those in

the land of the frozen tundra surly…Rats said this was Corporate America’s playground….but that isn’t true….The members are the WORLD movers and shakers….Some of them don’t even get to play it, as their schedules conflict with the months the course is open….How wouold you like to cough up a couple hundred bucks and not get to play….Oh, forgot the Prestege factor…and the wonderful fit of those green jackets…At one time, Hart Shaftner and Marx had the contract to make them…I was told they measured each member 6 times to make them right….Hell, my taylor onlly measures me 2-3 times at most….Oh well, my suits arn’t green either….STUB

I realise it is a private club

But it’s also one of the 4 majors..one can play any other major venue as far as I know. But I do understand world movers and shakers, even if they are stuck up their own behinds. We have plenty here too.

by Easingwold on Mar 8, 2011 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

Well, it didn't start out to be a major...In fact, it really was built so that

Bobby Jones and Cliff Roberts had some place to play, without the great unwashed tagging along or getting in their way…They wanted a course where they could invite their friends…The Tournament started out as an invitational and evolved into the event we now have…It’s still an invitational, just more Snooty if you will…You don’t win, you don’t get to play…The club (see Director here) determines who gets invited, Pro and Amatuer…Oh, and ya better not say anything Bad or off color either…Just ask a certain announcer about that one…Hint…he has a handle bar mustash that he used Bikini wax on….STUB

I know the history of it.

And, yes, Gary got it between the eyes. But it did become a major. Snooty people I have no time for. Even if they invited me to play with them there, I’d decline.

by Easingwold on Mar 8, 2011 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

In all fairness to the clib Easy...You can play it...

you just have to be invited and PLAY with a member…The member usually picks up the tab for you…(they dont publish what that cost is) but your expected to pay the Fore Caddy about 200.00 and tip the locker room attendant 50.00 for doing your shoes…Drinks are free, well, at least to you as a guest, but don’t forget to stop at the Pro Shop and drop another 75.00 for a shirt….See…just look what a wonderful day you would have…hahaha….STUB

Your lucky to have played there 4 times Stub

I’ve been to the Masters 7 times so far and this year will be #8, but I would trade-in attending/working to play a round any day.

Jump...I really enjoyed each round, but I

felt the strangest sensation….It was almost as if someone were looking over your shoulder on each shot…kind of an Erie feeling…The first time, I was second guessing my self on everything I did…really strange…Hey…GF whooping your butt on Fantasy again?…STUB

Nope we have traded places...

in the top-5 all year so far. I am currently in 4th and she is in 6th but only 9 points behind me. Only 33 points separating her from the #1 spot and I’m 24 points back. Its been very close with her and I and EM all year so far. Good times. I just need to get her out drinking Martini’s with the players wives a little more often like she did last Sat. night at the Honda. Then make her do her fantasy picks for the following week upon her return. LOL Git err Done. I’m told her and Tabatha are sceaming to toss back a few this weekend. Buahahaha

You get that same feeling at St Andrews Stub.

Old Tom Morris watching over you. I would pay the costs you mention gladly, Stub, but the chances of me getting invited are as slim as me winning the Masters, lol.

Easy, I learned a Looooong time ago...Never say Never...If ya want

that same experience, here’s whats ya does….Think Masters when it’s time to spank Wendy bum in August….That way, you concentrate on the golf, and not the opponent….The only way she can even get close, is if she plays them “yeller balls” Jumpin sent her and the glare hurts yur eyes….Stay thirsty my friend…It’s one of the last (but not only) pleasures in life….STUB

Don’t think you can persuade yourself that Wickham Park = Masters by any stretch of the imagination.

Lol

No worries Wendy. I played Stoke Park ( course used in the Goldfinger scene , James Bond ) in ’98 and that was a beautiful place , with Azealas and Roadies everywhere. Closest I have been to Augusta.
