The softer side of Honda Classic winner Rory Sabbatini
Rory Sabbatini was the victor of last week’s Honda Classic, but we wonder if Sunday’s one-shot triumph over Y.E. Yang won him more fans as well as the tournament.
Golf observers with long memories may recall some of Sabbatini’s more notorious moments with loathing, grudging respect, or maybe a "Rory being Rory" shrug of the shoulders. If you chose the first option, you wouldn’t be alone, as 25 percent of respondents in a long-ago Sports Illustrated survey voted Sabbatini their most unpopular playing partner, according to the Arizona Republic.
Golf Digest’s John Strege peeled back a bit of the prickly outer layer to reveal a guy you may be surprised to meet.
Who can forget Sabbatini’s signature moment during the 2005 Booz Allen Classic? The South African putted out and stalked off the 17th green toward the 18th tee, leaving his slowpoke playing partner, Ben Crane, in the 17th fairway. He took heat for his impolite etiquette breach. But how many critics secretly applauded him for doing what so many of us wished we had the chutzpah to do when the turtles in our own foursomes slow play to a crawl?
As Strege pointed out, Sabbatini made his mea culpas following the incident. "In an effort to clear the air and begin my preparation for the 2005 U.S. Open, I would like to apologize for the unfortunate incident that took place at the Booz Allen Classic," Strege quoted Sabbatini as saying in a statement. "I was quite frustrated with the pace of play, something that has become an all too frequent occurrence on golf courses around the world, and reacted inappropriately."
Sabbatini (left, with Tiger Woods and Kenny Perry) dared to challenge Woods' dominance (Photo: Stuart Franklin, Getty Images)
Not so renowned was Sabbatini’s unexpected withdrawal from Woods’ 2007 Target Challenge, from which he cashed a $170,000 check. Who remembered -- or even knew at the time -- that the golfer gave the cash to a charity supporting military parents and their kids?
Then there was the time in 2007 when Sabbatini had the unmitigated nerve to suggest Woods was not infallible. What he actually said was that Woods was "as beatable as ever" -- after Tiger had beaten him by five strokes. It took a few years for reality to catch up with Sabbatini’s fighting words.
As for what some of the 34-year-old’s non-fans consider his churlish behavior, Sabbatini wants you to know he’s sorry for some of his past actions and hopes his son can forgive him.
"I'm a passionate golfer, I really am," he told reporters after Sunday’s win. "I love the game of golf and I've had my moments. I'm not proud of everything I've done out here, but I'm trying to learn. I'm trying to be a role model for my children and I know as my wife has said to me, I wouldn't want my son doing some of the things that I've done in the past.
"So I definitely have to take into account that my son is old enough now that he understands everything that I do, and really try and be a role model for him," Sabbatini said.
By virtue of his Honda Classic win, Sabbatini will join Woods and 49 other top-50 golfers for this week’s Cadillac Championship at Doral’s TPC Blue Monster. Just for old time sake, wouldn’t it be amusing if Rory and Tiger had a chance to tee it up together? Given recent history, we wouldn’t bet against Sabbatini finally making good on his toothless-Tiger boast.

There is a difference between not being politically correct...
and being an ass. And Rory has been on the latter side more than once in his career, irrelevant of his laudable charitable moves.
By the way thinker, are there marshalls at the border of Texas making sure no Lone Star beer gets out of the state?
Well, TWO...first things first...Ya dang right...Last thing

When you have had ours you’ll know the difference. And British women are the best in the world too.
OOooooo – keep your guard up, Eas – them’s fightin’ words in Tay-haas. They don’t like the idea of people anywhere else saying that they have as good anything as in Texas. (at least you didn’t say you had barbecue as good as theres – it would’ve been on !) :-D

OK Mr. Easy...that did it...I'm throwing down the glove

And the Belgians and Germans scoff at both.
But, Easing, picking a fight with the Planet of Texas is never a good idea.

Texas is indeed a mighty state
but just one of fifty at the end of the day. As for the Belgians and Germans, they have fine Lager, but they don’t make real ale like here .
My God, man, the ignorance you just showed is breathtaking.
The Belgians don’t have any fine ales? Good Lord.
by Charles Boyer on Mar 7, 2011 3:09 PM EST up reply actions
I didn't say that
I just said they don’t make real ale like here. After the warnings you posted last week, you should choose your words with a little thought.
First of all, there is a large difference between ignorance and stupidity, and saying someone is ignorant of a given fact is no insult.
Secondly, you have no need to lecture me about so-called “real ale” given that the late Michael Jackson himself accepted my charter membership to CAMRA, which I supported throughout its initial activities of reviving long dead English brewing practices. If you don’t know of Michael, I am not talking about the pop singer, instead, the English beer, food and Scotch critic, whom I knew for some 20 years from my own brewing at the time. Michael was my friend and he was an occasional guest in my home, where he freely availed himself of my microbrewing efforts, as I was of his home’s charms, which had the finest cellar of spirits of all flavors I have ever seen in private home.
Even Michael himself — and let’s remember that Michael was considered the man who was world’s leading beer critic and is thought of being the key player in the beer style revivalism that began in the early 1980’s — said that the best beer in the world is produced in Belgium, because they have always maintained the best of their old craft, unlike the Burton-on-Trent brewers whose methods he derided with great regularity both publicly and in private. That is only one man’s opinion, certainly, but at the time of his death if there was a notable commercially produced beer in the world that Michael had not tasted and rated, it was probably in a box bound for his home. He had forgotten more about brewing that most master brewers ever learn.
Secondly, as far as “real” ales go: Have you ever been to the Pajottenland Valley, and seen how Lambics are made? Only in wide, low wooden vats that are themselves as many as 200 years old. They are not inoculated with yeast, they ferment instead from the area’s natural yeasts. Belgium has many breweries like that, and many of them refuse to export thanks to EU meddling in their old world ways.
So yes, they make “real ales” in Belgian as authentic as you will find anywhere outside of the museums in old lands of Mesopotamia. That is, in fact, part and parcel of why the nation is considered to be the world’s leader in the art of zymurgy by most knowledgeable critics.
by Charles Boyer on Mar 7, 2011 3:33 PM EST up reply actions
I have tried real ale in Begium
and in Germany also. Good as they make beer and ale, it is not to my liking. Some of the European lagers I do enjoy, Czech lager being a favorate.
The 1980’s was a bad time for ale in Britain, many breweries falling to mass production for profit in the Thatcher years. But in the last 15 years, real ale has returned here with a vengance and is fast becoming the most popular drink here.
Critics have some merit. But not many Brits will agree with you that Belgium makes the best ale…it’s a question of taste. Just like Bud is popular in the USA, even though I don’t rate it. So, ignorance or stupidiity remains a bad choice of words, which ever you choose.
Easy.....
I agree with you about the choice of words.
The Saints were the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS for a year...hope I don't have to wait another 44 years for #2....WHO DAT!......:)
Thanks em
I suspect Charles doesn’t like me and that is fine. We all have an opinon here and no one has to agree. But Charles can’t warn people here about getting personal with Emily and then himself step over the line he has drawn…just saying. And if he bans me for saying that, it was nice knowing you all :)

Your not going anywhere. We could start an Angry Mob Scene, just like in the Monty Python movies. LOL

But I don’t think it’ll come to that. What started out Stub and me having a bit of fun at eachothers expense, obviously annoyed the boss ( real ale ).It’s nothing really. Just off to the shop to get a couple of bottles . :)
LOL
Good thing I’m not a beer drinker or I too would have been in Twubble. Once in a while a Heiniken or a Rolling Rock but thats about it.

Good stuff, Emily. Sadly, the media rarely does a very good getting to know these guys since putting on a fireworks show when one of these guys does something outside what is usually considered acceptable behavior. Articles like this should have been written years ago.
I’ve met Sabbatinni a few times. Depending on when you run into him, you either find a guy who is focused and on a hair trigger (which apparently he is toning down because of his kids), relaxed – friendly – and quite funny, or so laid back you wonder if he’s awake or not.
Emiliy brings up the Booz Allen week incident with Ben Crane – missed it by a shot, though – Rory finally got fed up and walked off after hitting his second shot on 17 while Crane was going through his human rain delay routine. He was at the green when Crane finally hit his shot – then putted out while Crane was walking to the green and headed off to the 18th. Call him a jerk if you want – but there had been complaints about Crane all year and he didn’t change a thing. It took a complete embarrassment from Sabattini to get him to start speeding up. Hooray for Rory ! Emily pointed out that critics were “secretly” cheering what he did – so the question SHOULD be to those cowards in the media who were too chicken to applaud what happened instead of giving Crane the politically correct hug treatment while painting Rory as a monster.
Seriously, I’d bet that we all have played with people so slow or so bad that we wanted to get out of there. Personally, I’ve done it. The gap to the next group was huge and I couldn’t take it anymore, so I took off by myself and ended up playing in with the group in front. After pointing out that we were falling behind and the course was backing up behind us for several holes, I told the slowpokes that they were holding up the golf course and I had other things to do than play a 6 hour round of golf – nice meeting you guys – enjoy the rest of the round – and off I went.
The guy had the cojones to say Tiger wasn’t invincible…and then he beat Tiger…but all anybody remembers is Rory being “rude” and “cocky” about #1.
Sure – he can be a little cocky – he can even be a little abbrasive if you think the world is supposed to be covered in velvet, but I’ve been a fan of the guy for years. He’s tough inside the ropes – and he may not be your cup of tea – but remember that the media blew things way out of proportion with him.
Are vegetarians allowed to have butterflies in their stomach?
It may not be polite, but like CG and Sabbatini, I’ve gone to the next tee while slowpokes in my 4some finished on the green. Somehow those players — who must need an hour and a half to watch “60 Minutes” — never seem to get the less-than-subtle hint and I just choose not to play with them again.

No pro player should ever have a defeatist attitude against competing against anyone.
by Charles Boyer on Mar 7, 2011 3:07 PM EST up reply actions
Well done Sabbatini
I’ve always liked Rory’s game, and his never back down attitude,..particularly involving Woods. We are seeing more of that “Tiger Who” from the new crop of players, and I just love it! If you go in with the attitude that you don’t think you can win,..guess what ?…you won’t. The old Tiger knew this, but guys like Bob Mays, Scottie Dunlap and Rocco didn’t. Check cashers ???…dunno. Players like Camillo,Rory Mc and Sabbatini, will go for the throat, and that is to be commended. No more Bart Bryants, Skip Kendalls or Briny Bairds ! 0-333, (Baird) is ridiculous.
you're still away,...choke on it !
I always thought Els suffered this way
He had the game to take on Woods…but mentally didn’t believe it, IMO
It always seemed to me that Els competitive fire waned when his children were born and dimmed even further when one was found to have autism.
by Charles Boyer on Mar 7, 2011 3:08 PM EST up reply actions
Els and 2010
Els knew for some time before 2010 that he had a son with autism.
Els won the 2010 WGC-CA Championship (Doral) at 18[-under with his house guest, Charl Schwartzel finishing second. Two week’s later won the Palmer Invitational at 11-under.
Els’ house is key here – he bought the house in 2009 because there is a facility that is very effective in helping autism cases in youngsters.
He had an official PGA Tour earnings of $4 million year in 2010, which isn’t bad. He also had about another million in non-official money.
As the veteran sage, Raymond Floyd said one year when he racked up a ton of unofficial dollars, It may not be officasl money to the PGA Tour, but it is official money to the IRS"
Don't worry, nothing will be allright.
rcrusoe
A hell of a lot more than 1 million in non official money. Try at least what he made in official.
Well howdy Little Lady...so you is

Els competitive fire
EE severed his left ACL 5/6 yrs ago. That’s what did him in. He has said he played with pain for 5 years after the surgery. He’s never quite been the same. btw,..this is the exact same surgery that Brad Faxon (gone), Len Mattice (gone) and Tiger Woods (struggling) went through. You just don’t comeback fron an ACL reconstruct, at least nobody I remember has.
you're still away,...choke on it !
He did win the Open in 2002.
Had a few chances after that. Did he damage the knee on a boat ? Apart from that, he was always a streaky putter and that lost him a few majors. Ironic that Woods has become mortal on the greens also.
EE's ACL
EZ,…I believe that is correct. It was a boating accident that resulted in EE ACL being severed.
you're still away,...choke on it !
Quite well
I’m still off work, so have time to practise more. And I have finally started chipping practise…my big weakness. Breaking 80 more often now. Pleased the way it is going, even if the buzz is gone ( no fist pumps ) I still get some satisfaction from it.
Who is really at fault?
Eh, Emily K….I thought Rory’s unprofessional performance at the ‘05 Booz Allen Classic was in extremely poor taste. Yes he apologized. He really did not have a choice lest he be treated like a leper. With that said the “slow play” was poorly handled by the on course officials. This is where the breakdown came. You either are on the clock or your not on the clock. I’m not privy to what might have been said. It would appear as I watched that debacle someone’s head should have rolled. Rory who plays briskly should have asked the officials to tell Ben C to get his hinny in gear or suffer the consequences. Congrats on his win I thought the closing holes offered some exciting golf as the final three made it through the Bear Trap.
