What do we like about golf ?
Golf...what a sport. I feel lucky to have discovered it. When I was young, I played all the American sports at school. Basketball was my favorate game, but at 5 ft 11 in at 16 I was not tall enough. I could touch the rim, but could never dunk. At 16, I returned to England. After a spell in the Royal Navy, I was in civvy street and took up Rugby. I had, for me, 6 good years, I joined a gym, being too small to play in the pack and soon got stronger. But for 4 years I carried on going to the gym. Then it happened. Someone from work asked me if I would like to play golf. I said, I never have before, but down we went. I shot 63 for 9 holes. We went again, about 6 of us. I again was rubbish, but this time a mate came down who had one arm not quite 100%...and he beat me...very fit at the time. I thought, what a great game. I followed it scince the '60's, but never dreamed I'd be playing it one day. In '92 I started taking it seriously and broke 100, then joined a club in '93. My late son Jamie, joined Easingwold GC in '96 and soon won the junior matchplay final. We had many great rounds together...once, we both chipped in on the same hole. 2 years ago we had a round at Filey GC and traded birdies like we played of scratch for the front 9, both going out in 1 over. What a laugh we had about that. The last round we had together, he rolled in a 60 foot putt for a birdie. Bliss.
I play a lot with mates from work, the oldest being 59. We are all still competitive and when I think of all those sports I played when I was young, Golf remains the best, because of the people we play it with. And at 53, I can still hit a ball like I did when I was 33. It is also a game with great honour and is probably the best game because it forces one to look into oneself...there is no where to hide. Teaches people manners. We shake hands after. When someone gets a hole in one, there is genuine joy from his opponents. Not to mention the people we meet because of golf. Waggle room included. I feel lucky to play golf. What a game.

now Stub – we know Eas is a good Englishman and former Navy man – he doesn’t need an excuse to have a few pints. :-)
Fathom the odd hypocrisy that the government wants every citizen to prove that they have health insurance, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.
Yes he does....he's married is't he

ok ok - sorry Eas..
…I’ll take a stab at a serious answer…..
I’m with you in the group that really enjoys the comradery of golf…and that doesn’t always mean playing with friends. I enjoy going out to a course and being paired with some complete strangers. It’s rare that I don’t get to meet some interesting people – no matter how good a game they have.
Golf is also probably the most challenging sport I have ever played. I like playing a game where I can try to control the ball – make it move up and down – left and right to fit what’s needed.
And, of course, it’s a nice way to spend a few hours outdoors.

It's more enjoyable than going to a psychiatrist

To put it simply
I love absolutely everything about golf.
The man who never alters his opinions is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind.
~ William Blake
Alright Court, I'll play.
I agree with all the reasons Easy gave. I love the competition, weather it’s against others or against the course……there is always the opportunity to compete. I love to play in tournaments and have played on a cash tour the past few years. Having a shot or putt with 5K on the line is exhilarating and never gets old. I won a tournament with a first prize of $7,500, and it was the most exciting round in my 45 years of golf….talk about nervous.
I also love the time spent outdoors, no matter how hot or cold. I love golf because it is a game of integrity and honesty, which is absent in almost all other sports.
You’re right Easy……I love golf…..it is my passion and I could play all day every day.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS...until February 6th....get over it!....WHO DAT!......:)
Most I won was a few first prizes on days out
or 40 quid in club trophies. $7,500? Well done em, impressive.
It was a great week-end
7 years ago and I still remember almost every shot………
The Saints were the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS for a year...hope I don't have to wait another 44 years for #2....WHO DAT!......:)
Dusk, no wind, the sun setting
and the shadows lengthening. Clean, warm, clear air and no sound except for the birds foraging for a last minute snack before dark. Seeing a shot in your mind’s eye and then doing exactly that – no one around to see it, but that’s OK and it’s more than enough.
The one game where you can play on your own or with three others – where no one has to win, just being there, is why you’re there. A game where you make life long friendships with people you would never otherwise have met.
A game that you can and often do, hate with all your heart…….. and then can’t wait to get back out there and do it all again.
Golf – the greatest game of all.
Hey EM...on top of being down right fetching, Ping
is also loquasious…whod a thunk it…..STUB

sadly no,age does matter in that game! Good game in Cardiff though just not the right result!!! Have to admit you have a good chance at the Grand Slam this year however. Could be the decider in Dublin but beware the cockerel……..:)
France look good as usual.
Wales always stir the emotion when England play them. Amazing how long ago JPR, Edwards and co played. What a team they were.
My favorite quote about golf from David Feherty
“I just want to get good enough so I can quit”
Now you are talking Easy
The 70s were the golden era of Welsh rugby. Won a few Grand Slams since then mind you. Remember the last time England won the Slam? 2003 the same year you won the World Cup so maybe the omens are good! Golf I find beautiful, frustrating, rewarding, exciting and annoying-bit like watching Wales play rugby!!!!!! Oh well can always srew the top off a cold bottle of kiwi sauvignon.
and make sure Wendy is using tonic water instead of soda water if she offers you a gin and tonic. :-D

You know darn well I'd buy you a drink
anytime. It might be with gritted teeth if I lose to you at golf, however. I thought it was agreed that you’d make a trip from Bournemouth in August for a round on my home course? It’s a short, easy course, and I’m betting you’ll get cocky and overdrive ;o)
Your'e on Wendy
I’m down there Aug 19 to Sept 2nd, anytime that suits you. (I’ll download the course on my Ipod when I get down there :) )
Ha! I know that you've already
had a good look at it. Now I just need to have the course set up in a certain way to thwart you. To everyone who says I want an unfair advantage – wouldn’t you?
Bloody Crookhorn
I know you’ll choose that one. Oddly enough I played it pretty well until someone told me how tough it was. Practise those sideways lies – course is hell on the calves.
You guys let cows play golf?? Boy things are different over there......:)
Do they yell “FORE” or do they just “moo” real loud?? How do the sheep feel about all this?
The Saints were the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS for a year...hope I don't have to wait another 44 years for #2....WHO DAT!......:)
Looks a good course that one
Still on the short side, but many hilly lies..makes one think. Wasn’t that where you used to play ?
Yes, that's where we started out
but the friend we wanted to play with lived at Fareham to the west so Wickham was halfway between us. Went back to Crookhorn for one year, but too many holes totally closed (not even temporary greens) in winter so rejoined Wickham. It’s the sidehill lies which are the vey devil at Crookhorn.
is that doubly SURE or pouring a double ? ;-)
Fathom the odd hypocrisy that the government wants every citizen to prove that they have health insurance, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.
Thanks to you
I’ve gone over to white wine spritzers. Unfortunately that means I have to doublecheck that I’m adding soda & not tonic. Just stop messing with my drinking habits, will you?
2003 - the best dream finish I have ever seen in rugby wc
for obvious reasons. Remember every moment but that Jonny Wilkinson drop goal to win is etched on my memory for ever. Want all the best for Martin Johnson of course.
When I first started playing golf
we used to play the first 3 holes on a cliff-top course round and round again after work until it was too dark to see. Incredible way to unwind after a stressful day & became totally hooked. Have had many memorable rounds, not because of good scores necessarily, but more to do with the company & even weather conditions.
To say that I still love it today because it can be played at any age, between all ages, between all levels, would be rationalising it – I just love hitting that ball. I sometimes hate where it ends up though.
I like you people
You love golf, drinking and in Easy’s case rugby!!!!!!! Can’t fault it.
Rugby at it's best
is the best of power, speed and skill than any sport I’ve played or watched. The athletes who play the game today are unbelievable.
Well, I'll tell you one thing,,,It's easy (no pun) to see that
you two have never witnessed a TIDDLEY WINK or CHESS tourament….now, THAT’S exciting…..jis sayin….STUB

World Cup in New Zealand
Will the kiwis fulfil their destiny? or will les bleus ruin the party. What are wendy’s plans to sabotage the cockerel? Fitness levels are huge these days and the French can play with so much power, pace and beauty but,but they can be flaky. Nope never been to a chess or tiddlywinks tournament……………………what have I missed ??
This time
The Kiwis should win…but we have seen them fail more than once when they should have gone all the way.
The Kiwis will win
Damn them! They’re beautiful to watch – and can play like a knife slicing through butter. Cannot divulge cockerel sabotage plans, scrum – we’ve still got France vs England to play in this tournament. “Allez les bleues, allez” rings out from someone in this household.
"beautiful"
seems to be a recurring theme with Wendy – dirt covered, muscular men running and rolling and scrumming all over the place…. :-D
Fathom the odd hypocrisy that the government wants every citizen to prove that they have health insurance, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.
New Zealand has a destiny ? Aside from nervous sheep ? (lol)
awwww – nuts on the French – wave a few white flags from the stands and they won’t be able to concentrate on the game. :-)
Fathom the odd hypocrisy that the government wants every citizen to prove that they have health insurance, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.
Not when it comes to rugby, Court
no white flags from the French – damn, they’re fast, sneaky and can steal a game in the dying moments. Now my plan is…… I suspect someone is looking over my shoulder – discuss later …..
Nuke 'em??

There are three things a New Zealand man always lies about -
“I played for the All Blacks, I’m related to the Maori King and I was just helping it over the fence Your Honor”.
Nervous sheep
Only the pretty ones get nervous so I’m told :0)
You have a point about the cockerels there is good France and bad France
I like it because...
I learned how to play when I was 11 y/o as a caddy at a CC in Massachusetts. Having looped for so many different people on the weekends taught me to appreciate ALL the players on ALL the tours and not just the ones the media tells us we should be watching for.
Here I am 42 years later, still playing and making a good living, thanks to an industry that has remained strong for as long as I can remember. I hear some people say things like, “O’h No the sky is falling and golf ratings are down” and Blah Blah Blah. I can assure you that our beloved game will be around for a long time to come and it will thrive as it always has. I attended the PGA Merchandise Show just 2 weeks ago and they had record setting vendors and crowds of wholesale buyers from around the world. A sign that all is well for sure.

ahhhh em
Being that I’m in Ireland at the moment and my g/f isn’t, I’d rather not discuss the topic of sheep. Lord knows there are enough of them around here. LOL ;o)

dontcha, em? I promise never to mock American cheerleaders, snowbunnies or cartgirls, ever again (well, not in the next week or two).
Don’t want to be picky, but even Henrik has better thighs than this lot – allegedly!
I googled "Rugby Cheerleaders".......my computer crashed?????
What is up with that. No cheerleaders for Rugby? Hmmmmm.

We're on his joke mailing list - got a couple today
He also posts on RealWomenGolf (Heather Jones). Assume he just got fed up with us.
