Golf Channel Hits New Low

I guess the Golf channel assumes all golfers are Republicans.

But, I admit it; The GolfBookie is a Democrat! As such, it pisses me off to have the Golf Channel hosting Rush Limbaugh on the Hank Haney Show. It’s bad enough that he gets to bloviate on his own show; do we really have to see this bigoted hypocrite on the only channel dedicated to golf? You lost me,and I imagine a few others, Haney!

But...

we get to see Rush for the arrogant, ignorant, fool that he is in real life, without 8 producers in his ear to make his mouth move. You’d think with all that money he could pay someone to swing the club for him. Holy Crap, I was better when I was 10 years old, & had to sneak on the local muni on the 4th tee, because I didn’t have the 75 cents to play.

waaaaaawwwaaaawaaaaaawwwwwwwaaaaaaaaawwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

At least we can be sure that Bookie is telling the truth that he’s a crybaby liberal.

hey Bookie – he’s a 60 year old who took up the game in his 40’s and has very little time to actually practice. Nobody actually cares how good you were at age 10 – things like golf are a lot easier to learn at that age. The idea of this project is to have a well known celebrity who wants to get better at golf. Limbaugh has the largest radio audience in the world. What xxx Golf Channel is trying to do is draw some of that audience to the channel to boost their ratings and maybe get some new regular viewers.

Did you lose this much sleep over a half hour show when Barkley or Romano were on ?

Something else to consider ? Because of guys like Limbaugh, you’re still allowed to watch or not watch any show you want.

Facinating reading about Limbaugh

but the worlds largest radio audience belongs to the BBC world service..over 40 million in the English version alone..over 200 million in 32 languages.

yes – public radio here tries to make that claim, too – then they ask for donations (because nobody is listening and nobody wants to advertise there) :-D

Doesn’t BBC World run different channels ? (total audience is huge) They also run 24/7 – not a 3 hour show in one language beamed around the world.

I tune in to BBC Radio during Wimbledon. They have a blast calling the matches.

Wrong mate

The BBC is a corporation, but it’s funding is government controlled. The BBC occupies an unique position in that it is not owned by anyone. You can’t paint the world with an American brush all the time.

think what you like – just because the government has no reason to publically control what goes on at the BBC at the moment doesn’t mean that if something happens they don’t like, they won’t pull the plug. One of 2 usually.

Labour ( Democrats to you ) or Conservative ( Republicans ) This time there was no majority, so Conservative and the Liberals formed a coalition Government. There are MP’s from other parties, but the party with the majority rule.
But you are still wrong about the BBC.

by Easingwold on Feb 16, 2011 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

Over here, we have Dems and Reps, of course – but only once in a while does a different party get someone in office. We’ve seen a few Libertarians in low offices – and Vermont actually elected a guy in a Socialist/Communist party into a major office. (the Tea Party isn’t an official party)

ok ok – I’m wrong about the BBC…until someone gets in government who wants control. (ducking) :-) We’ve had two presidents who have hinted at passing legislation that would put most of our radio broadcasting companies under direct governmental oversight. They called the “Fairness Doctrine” which would force a station that has, for example, three hours of Rush Limbaugh, to do three hours of some liberal talk show….even though the market has proven several times that liberal talk radio doesn’t work. The idea behind the legislation is to shut down conservative talk shows because liberal talk shows don’t make enough money to pay the bills – so you either have to go into debt to fund the liberals to keep the profitable conservative show – or you get rid of the conservative show….which is the goal of the legislation. Thankfully, the Fairness Doctrine has been beaten down every time.

I agree there

Limbaugh can say what he wants, but he shouldn’t be muzzled so others can have as much air time. Plus, people don’t have to agree with him. But a lot are gullable as well. Was he out of order for attacking M J Fox ?

by Easingwold on Feb 16, 2011 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

Fix the time line – Michael J Fox started it with his comments – Limbaugh stated his disagreement with Fox’s statement. Then the liberal media jumped all over Limbaugh, accusing him of picking on a guy with a disease. Limbaugh fired back saying that just because a guy has a disease doesn’t mean you get to say whatever you want without disagreement.

He wasn’t attacking Fox. Fox hasn’t complained that Limbaugh was picking on him. It was the media that caused the problem, and Limbaugh fired back at them.

http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/201101110029

The same thing happened when Limbaugh was on Monday Night Football. He was asked a question about Donovan McNabb (Philadelphia Eagles quarterback at the time – and he is black). Limbaugh said that the media doesn’t give an honest appraisal of his performances of late because they wanted a successful black quarterback. He was immediately attacked as a racist….but he never said anything about McNabb aside from the point that he hadn’t been playing well…which he hadn’t. He was fired because of what the media did to what he said.

Fox is one gutsy guy in my book – he hasn’t let his problem keep him from working in front of the camera.

over here, the FCC (a government agency) held up a merger between Sirius and XM satellite radio. They are private, subscription based services. The FCC held up the merger for almost 2 years demanding that they add liberal talk shows to “balance” the conservative shows, even though they had numbers to prove that their customers didn’t want those channels.

that merger set a new record for government approval by more than 18 months. The previous record was a merger between two major oil companies.

Fathom the odd hypocrisy that the government wants every citizen to prove that they have health insurance, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.

by courtgolf on Feb 16, 2011 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

I may have some insight on this

The main reason the merger took so long is the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters; the lobbying group for terrestrial stations) pulled every favor they could to derail the merger. By the way, the funniest part of the hearings was hearing anowner of multiple stations in the midwest admit he was a satellite radio subscriber becasue where he lived he couldn’t get a signal from any of his stations.

The reason the government was involved was becasue both companies leased space on the national spectrum to distribte cotnent. And I am sure keeping the two companies apart was part of the original lease agreement.

There wasn’t a decree to add liberal talk shows for balance. There was an agreement to provide space on the dial for, as they say, underserved customers (Native Americans, Latinos, etc.)

by TwoNuse on Feb 17, 2011 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

LMAO !! I have heard a lot of stories about the terrestrial owners “lobbying” the FCC against the merger – but that could be the best one yet.

The companies were definitely pushed to add liberal shows to balance the conservative shows – that’s where the agreement came from.

The whole thing made no sense because it’s a subscription service – you have to choose to listen to Sirius or XM – terrestrial radio wasn’t threatened in any way – but it was funny to hear them try to make that case.

Howard Stern was at his funniest taking the credit for the terrestrial owners pushing the FCC to stop the merger.

fan or not – this has been pretty entertainnig because Limbaugh admits that he doesn’t know a whole lot about the golf swing and that everybody else knows more than he does – so the reactions he gives when he gets something right are classic. Even funnier is when Haney tries to tell him that he’s doing something wrong, then Limbaugh hits it his way first before trying Haney’s way, and he holes out a shot.

I didn’t think it was going to be very entertaining either, thinking he might be like Romano, trying to perform all the time, but he’s giving a pretty honest effort.

I was shocked at how Haney handled Barkley. He laughed at Barkley’s story of how he went from being a 10 handicap to someone who looked like he was having a seizure. Every pro who looked at him said it was between the ears – not physical. The guy can do everything else but swing a golf club – and Haney insisted on swing drills. My first thought was to switch to left handed…and guess what he’s doing a year after he left Haney ? Yep – swinging left handed.

swings one way, then the other..both have to be held in check…the far left or right have no place if there is to be compromise in society.
Interesting reading about the Clear Channel Communications who pay Limbaugh 50 million a year. Using actors for phone in topics and some censorship on political matters damages it’s integrity in being objective. Using radio to promote political beliefs has to be gaurded against, left unchecked, one would end up with state radio in a dictatorship.

sounds like what you’re talking about are the liberals who pretend not to be liberals, but eventually give themselves away – which is always strange because Limbaugh constantly invites liberals to call in. not that they are actors, they are acting like they are regular listeners – not liberals. funny thing is that he puts liberals at the top of the call list. they go before regular callers.

depends on the compromise. it was compromise that allowed Hitler and Stalin to rise to the level they did.

LOL – now that’s funny. Not accurate – but funny.

Fathom the odd hypocrisy that the government wants every citizen to prove that they have health insurance, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.

Simple: If You Don't Like It, Don't Watch

I choose not to watch a lot of stuff with people I think are silly blowhards: Bill Maher, for example, or Bill O’Reilley for another. I don’t waste my time complaining about them, though, because it’s just a waste of my time.

by Charles Boyer on Feb 15, 2011 12:02 PM EST reply actions

Why is this a problem?

I’m a registered Democrat and have no problem having Limbaugh or anyone else being interviewed about golf on any channel. It’s a sport that appeals to a broad audience, and why not talk to interesting people from various walks of life about how the game affects them?

aww geez Cairo – there you go again – injecting reason into an argument. :-D

Ironic, I thought.

Cairo made a good point with a comment that has a Twitter account name and a URL for his own site.

by Charles Boyer on Feb 15, 2011 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

but that’s always there as a part of his tag from his profile – this golfbookie guy is a hit and run who typed his site address as a part of the post.

Fair points

I am going to have to put the brakes on some of this, and come up with a link policy for the site.

by Charles Boyer on Feb 16, 2011 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

If it can be easily done - otherwise

I wouldn’t put too much effort into it. Doubt many bothered to go to the site.

by WendyUK on Feb 16, 2011 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

agreed – it doesn’t come up often enough to be a real problem. and Cairo is pretty much a regular – not some hit and run one timer.

I mostly frequent SB Nation sites that relate to college football where this form of signature is a standard practice. Also, I made the decision to make it written and not an HTML link to make it even less prevalent. I also think it bad taste to go on a thread and say, “Gee! I just had a post on this topic in my blog (linky) that I think you all should see.”

If you really want to visit it you can type it in. Probably hurts the number of site hits, but it’s not profit-driven anyways.

What this person did was provide a link to a golf gambling site, which is just asking for your credit card info to be stolen and used to rack up credit charges in Sao Tome.

Not True, Cairo

Actually, GolfBookie is a free service for golfers that I maintain as a hobby. If you’d done your homework, you’d know that.
No credit cards, no way to pay for anything…….it just keeps track of bets amongst your golf group.

And bright sun also…I have been going around in shorts, Golf shirt, (short sleeved) and Crocks….Stood in the surf, which was also warm, and watched 3 little girls, about 6-7 years old by the size…The laughter and squeals were a delight to my old ears….Also fun to see the Parents trying to keep order…yea, right….Going home Monday….No, didn’t get the Land Rover, but had a flash of reality, and decided My Mercury would last a bit yet…Still debating on the Boat…They haven’t given me a quote yet on the Alterations I want….Oh, ask Sir what wine he wants me to bring for the evening….cheers…STUB

It's Ye Olde Roast Beef Rib tonight

with all the trimmings and I’ll lay an extra place. Sir says a nice claret would go down well.

Not usually – I like the taste of a good roast beast by itself. Horseradish covers too much of the meat taste for me.

well, gb, sometimes an off base, off the wall statement sparks some fun conversation on here – but careful with the self flattery – this is a golf board with a lot of people who like different things. (if you want to get on Stub’s good side – just ask him for a good martini recipe and a cigar to try) :-D

I get a kick out of someone throws a grenade into a crowd, then calls the people in the crowd “reactionary”. Technically, the crowd is reacting, but they certainly didn’t ask for someone to come in out of the blue and start trouble.

And – by the way – the golfbookie site looks pretty cool for a bunch of folks who play regularly. Nice job !

Least I can do

even tho’ you’re on shorts! Come to The Golden Lion in Southwick, where Ike and Monty (no, not that one) planned the D-Day Landings, so you know you’d get a warm welcome there.

Reading about HMS Dryad, Wendy

I was based there for a stint in the ’70’s. We went into the room where they planned D day. I didn’t realise it closed in ‘04. I’m almost a fossil :)

Yes, transferred to HMS Collingwood

but not the same atmosphere at all. Probable that the whole Southwick estate will be sold off.
