It's time Tiger Woods got punished.

As most people know, Woods spit yet again. Call me old fashioned, but this is simply unacceptable. This time, however, he broke ettiquete like never before. Even the boulder incident. It is not the first time, he has done it many times on the fairway. But spitting on the green less than 10 feet from the hole shows no respect for the game and even less for his fellow players. Why is he allowed to get away with it ? I believe because he brings so much publicity to the tournament, the organisers fall over backwards to get him in. Paying him appearence money around the world is almost certain profit for the organisers and I don't blame them. Even Jerry West is almost on his knees to get Woods to LA, but he's not going.

Woods is not the only player to spit but seeing him get away with it they will do the same. Even worse, kids will think it is fine to do the same. It is time he was punshed. Fines ? They mean nothing to him...I think he has contempt at times for those who run the game. Ettiquette is part of the rules of golf. Penalty shots go on the card for breaking some rules, I think Woods should have been penalised likewise in some way. It is the only thing that would make this spoilt man/boy take notice.

Woods has done a lot for the game, in that more people watch, but that's no good if they see him behave in this way. One of the best things about golf for juniors is that the game teaches them manners...what will the future of the game be like if they think this is acceptable ?

OK, You're old fashioned....

My goodness Lord Easingwold you’re developing a serious case of Tigeritis. The Boulder Incident???? Good sir, that was not a matter of etiquette. It was a mater of a rule and it was resolved correctly. That huge bolder was NOT embedded. This is another one of those times, like rules violations called in by viewers when name players or those in the lead get most of the broadcast time. Fines mean nothing to him? They mean nothing to any of the players out there…..A comedian here, Steve Martin, had a line on his first album…. He recommend “death for parking tickets”….. What’s next, a fine for burping? Spit police? I know it’s unseemly…. It used to irk me when one of the players in my foresome would run behind a tree and whip out his willy….

by pingforever on Feb 14, 2011 5:39 AM EST reply actions

Ping, Woods is not in your fouesome or mine

he is the most famous golfer on the planet and has a responsiblilty to the game when on camera. Funny about the boulder as a loose impediment..it never said you could use a group of people with the power of a tractor to move it. Tigeritis ? On the contrary, I think the time has come to remind him golf is a privlidge and deserves more respect than he is giving it.

by Easingwold on Feb 14, 2011 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

Ah, the boulder

He got a ruling. It was ruled a loose impediment. The loose impediment was removed. End of story.

by chip n'putt on Feb 14, 2011 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

Don't blame him for taking advantage of it

Seve did that often enough. But it was against the spirit of the game IMO.

by Easingwold on Feb 14, 2011 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

Even though I don't agree with the 400lb plus pound loose impediment ...

I think the violation indeed should have been with the FAN PARTICIPATION, having been allowed to move it. I don’t recall fans being allowed to participate in any sport, never mind golf.

Yes jumpin

I agree, if the golfer can’t move it, it isn’t loose, correct ? We can move just about anything if we have enogh people to do it.

by Easingwold on Feb 14, 2011 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

This where I disagree

The rules of golf more often than not punish – so when you get one that goes your way, take it and run. The spirit of the game is upheld by the rules and God knows, there are enough of them. If the rule is shown to be incorrect or unfair, then it does get changed. It just takes a while! This was cut and dried, so no harm and certainly, no foul.

by chip n'putt on Feb 14, 2011 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

But he needed help to move it.

He didn’t even join in and help move it himself. Can’t be right, IMO.

by Easingwold on Feb 14, 2011 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

Perhaps somebody that understands the official ruling

As it related to Fan Participation being allowed can explain it better. I’d look it up myself, but I don’t carry a rule book with me when I travel. LOL

23-1. Relief
Except when both the loose impediment and the ball lie in or touch the same hazard, any loose impediment may be removed without penalty.

That’s it – nothing else. He acted with in the rules and the rules official confirmed those rules.

Agreed.

but after the incedent, they should have updated the rule…“removed by the player”

From the Rules and Decisions

23-1/3 Assistance in Removing Large Loose Impediment
Q. May spectators, caddies, fellow-competitors, etc., assist a player in removing a large loose impediment?

A. Yes.

by chip n'putt on Feb 14, 2011 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

That’s in the decisions book – not the rule book – and I think it was added after the official gave Tiger that ruling – so it is in by precedent.

Fair enough Chip...thats the rule

I suppose with the huge galleries following Woods, he can have a tree trunk removed that is laying there, where another player might just have a few following him and be forced to take a penalty drop.

Possible – yes. Unlikely though. Similar to be being fined for spitting on the green when you are in front of the TV cameras all day long vs someone who is not. Quid pro quo?

putting it in perspective

Did you ever think that we fixate on Tiger’s actions because the Director of the Television coverage is obsessed with showing Tiger focused center-framed for half the Broadcast? I believe if we shined that spotlight on any other player, we’d find that Tiger’s behavior on the course isn’t “that” far from the norm. Could/Should it be better? Sure. But, we all have a skewed view of Tiger because we’re forced to witness his seemingly every action.

I’ve been watching pro golf for a long time and I’ve not seen anyone – sans Garcia spit on the green. Easy is right. I don’t care one bit what he does off the golf course, but on it, he is a role model for all. Sure, the cameras are on him more than anyone who has ever played the game, but he knows that. I like Tiger, but he needs to start to show some of the class of Jack instead of just chasing his records

Not sure if this will reach as high as the pulpit, Eas, but here goes….Tiger Woods gets punished for things quite a bit. Language – club abuse – things like that. Here’s the thing – the PGA Tour doesn’t release fines or punishment as a rule, and neither does the European Tour.

You’d think someone had shot a member of the royal family for all the uproar this has caused.

I guess court, if you want golf to be like other sports

once again – and for I don’t know how many times it has to be said for you to get it – I don’t agree with spitting on the greens ! once again – golf is NOT like most other sports.

But get a grip – I did a Google search on signs of the Apolcolypse – this isn’t one of them.

The man has been fined – he has been written about and talked about for a full day now – stop behaving like he is the first person to ever do this. This is even addressed in the rule book. If someone spits on the green – it is a loose impediment, and if you don’t want to move it (and who would), you can move your ball where it won’t roll through it.

A few things court

I take a leak behind a tree like a dog because the only toilet is on the 13th hole. If I can, I’ll wait and use that. Pro’s can’t do that, they have toilets provided for that. No one wants to see that on TV.
Now, Woods is not the first to do it. But he is on TV all the time. Doing it on the green was out of order, and like it or not, he has to set an example. That is one of the things a great golfer has to do…they get paid because on TV…so they shopuld play by it’s rules, (moral in this case)or get off.

by Easingwold on Feb 14, 2011 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

oh great – now you have me picturing you on all fours, then hiking a leg against the tree. :-D

don’t make excuses – there are laws against urinating in public….or are we picking and choosing which ones are ok and which ones aren’t ? your dividing line for public behavior is whether a camera is present or you are a public figure ?

there is no rule against spitting on the green – there is a rule allowing you to move the spit or move your ball away from it.

once again – so you won’t forget this time – we agree – it’s bad form….poor manners – but not the end of the world

Fathom the odd hypocrisy that the government wants every citizen to prove that they have health insurance, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.

End of the world ?

stop being dramatic. Woods did something disgusting on TV and got punished. And I bet he does it again, so this punishment won’t matter. So he will feel the usual thing, he can do what he wants and that isn’t right. Accually we don’t agree, because you just shrug your shoulders and say he isn’t the only one.
It’s one thing me doing it against a tree out of view from anyone and against a building in daylight. I could try all 4’s but my back wouldn’t like that much. You have some imagination, lol.

Typical of you to state that public urination is against the law

when you mean “It is against US law to urinate in public”!!!!!

It’s not illegal in many countries, Court. If some drunken idiot does it in public over here – say in a high street – he or she would be charged with “public disorder”; if someone was caught peeing on a golf course green, they would be in serious danger of receiving grevious bodily harm, but it is not actually against UK
law to urinate in public.

I'm embarrassed on your behalf, Court

for your reading ability – or rather lack of . It is not against the law in UK and indeed many other countries to urinate in public. Got that? You made a blanket statement that it was against the law but don’t have the balls to admit you’re wrong.

Did you notice the little bit I also wrote about drunken idiots peeing in public being arrested for “public disorder”? I have no doubt that the police would have cited his whole behaviour to support that charge, not merely that he was urinating.

by WendyUK on Feb 14, 2011 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

once again – YOU wrote the words, Wendy – YOU said that urinating in public wasn’t against the law. Make up your mind, is it against the law or isn’t it ?

Would it be too condescending to point out that we all know that some laws aren’t always enforced to the letter ?

The whole point of the peeing in public thought was to illustrate Eas’ hypocrisy and that he was getting way too upset over a guy spitting on a green (possibly because it was Woods and not just some other golfer). This whole mess is blown out of proportion.

It goes back to not throwing the first stone. Which is worse – spitting on a green or peeing in public ? (and if you say the first, then I’m coming to the UK and take a leak in your garden – private property – to see if you still think that way)

Fathom the odd hypocrisy that the government wants every citizen to prove that they have health insurance, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.

by courtgolf on Feb 14, 2011 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

Court, this was about Woods

spitting on the 12 green at Dubai on TV in front of millions. You bring up urination ( weak bladder at your age? ) in public which is nothing to do with what the topic is about. You can’t bring in something that breaks the law and compare it to something that breaks a conduct code at a professional golf tournament. All I said is that he should get punished for it (before the fine came out ) and he did. He even said sorry. Hopefully he won’t do it again, not to mention swearing in front of children. No big deal to you, maybe. But it is to a lot more. If you do have kids, think about it. You wouldn’t want yours thinking it’s ok to do those things on the 18th at your club in front of members, would you ? Woods, as the most famous golfer has a responsibilty. Westwood and others understand that better than Woods does. Lets hope he has learned his lesson.

by Easingwold on Feb 14, 2011 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

COMPARISON, Eas – COMPARISON. I said it over and over and over hoping you would pick up on it – wasn’t even trying to be subtle at all. I brought it up as a question to you – pointing out (ready ? here it comes AGAIN) that you willingly overlook something that is against the law – but crucify someone (especially this guy) who breaks a rule of manners.

Fathom the odd hypocrisy that the government wants every citizen to prove that they have health insurance, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.

IT IS NOT AGAINST THE LAW IN THE UK

TO URINATE IN PUBLIC. That help any, Court?

Anyone who has taken a long country walk miles away from a public toilet, or gone hiking, etc, etc, has surely had to take a pee “in public”. Therefore to me spitting on a green is indeed worse than peeing in public.

However, come and take a leak in my garden and you’ll be done for Breach of The Peace – behaviour likely to provoke violence". You’d return to the USA minus a vital piece of your anatomy.

I’m quite tolerant about my neighbour’s dog which pees up against the entrance pillar to my drive, however.

Now where I can understand Ladies having a problem with this

every man here has likely urinated on a golf course once. You brought up this senario, trying to compare it to Woods doing something disgusting on TV broadcast all over the golfing world. Now you seem to think, because it doesn’t brak a rule, it is no big deal. But if you have kids ( I don’t know if you have) I somehow don’t think you would want them doing that on the 18th in front of the clubhouse full of people. By doing nothing, or excusing it, like you seem to be, because it doesn’t break any rules of the game, you are saying it is ok to do so. Yes, he didn’t break any rules of the game, but his conduct was disgusting and he got fined for that. That is the important thing, because golf is more than a game, one should know how to behave in front of others.

by Easingwold on Feb 14, 2011 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

what I’m wondering is, is why are you this bent out of shape over it ? and you still haven’t answered my question. You have no problem breaking a law and excusing yourself (the law doesn’t care if there are cameras around or not) – but you want to have Woods punished and humiliated for breaking a rule of manners. Why are you so hypocritical on this ? Just because Woods did it ? Because Ewan Murray pronounced Woods to be arrogant and petulant ?

last time – Eas – I’ve said it more than enough times to get through to you – NO IT IS NOT OK TO SPIT ON THE GREEN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW ???? It happened – he has been publically humiliated and fined. He has apologized – though you are determined to deny that – saying that he didn’t mean it.

Time to let it go.

Fathom the odd hypocrisy that the government wants every citizen to prove that they have health insurance, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.

Had he apologised immediately after the round

much of this conversation wouldn’t have taken place.

lol – you can’t possibly believe that. this is Tiger Woods – the media’s favorite punching bag. they are going to have as much fun with this as they can.

Here's my quintessential "pee" story".....

I was mowing tees early one morning at a course in Oregon. I watched one of our members, playing alone, walk up to the trash basket on the tee and pee… It was our procedure to separate Aluminum cans in the trash, so this was a bit repugnant….yes, I did the separating… So I politely approached the man, called him by name and asked him not to pee in the trash. He looked me square in the eye and denied doing it. I was so taken aback, I got on my mower and drove away…. Incidently, those guys in my foursome used to excuse themselves saying, “I’ve got to download my software”…… As God is my witness, I’ve never relieved my self on a golf course except of course in a rest room. I’d make a point to using the restroom before I teed off and at the turn. Now, can we stop talking about spitting and peeing….

lol – I guess you never went to his house and peed in his kitchen garbage container ?

So, Stenson can

strip to his undiies & play a shot on Live National TV, but Tiger spits & it’s a Federal offense? REALLY??

Of all of the on course transgressions that is “Tiger” (off course too, come to think of it) there have been many who have done it all before, and many will come along behind him.

Face it, we’re all obsessed with everything Tiger Woods…because that Director in the Television Truck wants us to be…

We’re all a bit soft-minded.

Not a federal offense, Randy

just plain disgusting to spit on a green. He’s been fined, he’s apologised, I’ve moved on.

LOL!!!

71 comments about peeing and spitting..lol. And of course the 12 year old boulder story sneaks in. Only Tiger I suppose. Thanks everyone, I had a rough day and needed a good laugh. By the way, I don’t like what Tiger did, but it’s not even in the same league as Sergio deliberately spitting directly in the hole a few years back. And I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve seen professional golfers spit on the course, it’s actually rather common. I’ve even seen a few rednecks spitting tobacco on a golf course; now that’s nasty!! Bet Boo’s been there done that…lol

Sergio got as much, if not more media attention for what he did in the cup.

That was indeed wrong as well. I betcha his spit went right through the flag stick center hole though. jes sayin.

If Woods wasn't on camera the whole time

it wouldn’t be an issue. Dustin Johnson spit a bit last year but I noticed he has stopped…but this was on the green in full view…nuff said TH…hope you recover from your rough day.
