Tiger spits it up at Dubai Desert Classic

February 13 -- Taking a page from playing partner Sergio Garcia’s book, Tiger Woods reportedly discharged some saliva on the 12th green on his way to a bogey on the par-4 and a T20 finish at the Dubai Desert Classic.

The world’s No. 3 spat on the golf course and he could blame Garcia for being a bad influence. But it’s not the first time Woods has expectorated in disgust. Too bad fines or whatever discipline to be (un)named later will have no impact on such future behavior.

Everyone recalls Garcia’s infamous expectoration on the 13th hole at the 2007 CA Championship at Doral. "I just missed the putt and I wasn’t very happy," Garcia told NBC at the time. "It ‘s not a big deal....It wasn’t going to affect anybody else."

Except for the guys following him who had to lift their Pro V1s from the sodden cup.

Star-divide

It’s not as if Garcia is the only spitter on tour. Golf watchers have been on Woods’ case for a few years as well.

"I blame Tiger for the trend. He has legitimized spitting just as he has legitimized workouts before you play," Michael Bamberger wrote in Sports Illustrated in 2008. "He fights allergies and is often congested, but his spitting seems connected to both the pollen count and his bogey count."

And there was this admonition from the UK’s Sunday Times in 2009: "Stop swearing, spitting and throwing and banging golf clubs." How’s that crusade working out?

But back to the golf. Alvaro Quiros bested the headliners with a hole-in-one and a triple bogey for a final-round 68 and 11-under for the tourney. His ace at the 11th helped him beat Anders Hansen and James Kingston by one shot.

Third-round frontrunner Rory McIlroy finished 10th and world No. 1 Lee Westwood limped home into 15th place.

As for the drooling duo, Woods started the final round one back of the leaders and proceeded to hack and hock his way around the Emirates Golf Club, carding a 75, with four bogeys and a double on the 18th. Garcia kept his lubrication to himself, despite a triple on the ninth and a matching 75.

Puerile. The whole damn post.

I hate that Tiger spits. I hated what Sergio did, but bloody hell, if I wanted this sort of rubbish, I can go to Fox. Emily, you need to pick your audience a little better than this. I’m disappointed – very.
By the way Alvaro Quiros, a class act and a wonderful advertisement for the game in all respects won the Dubai Open. That should have been the lead story, not this garbage. Grow up.

I agree chip

Emily should write for the Golf Channel when she does this. Woods, or anyone else spitting on the course should be fined. Big. But the story was the tounament, not Woods faltering in the wind again.

Yes I do Wendy

All good fodder for Fox and the like, but I came here because this site was dedicated to golf and the real stories and happenings of the golf world. WR has great, make that wonderful, people, but I’m sorry to say, that the tone of the reporting, has gone down hill considerably in the past couple of months.
Emily – I appreciate that you do what you do for the “mass market” and what you perceive they want to hear, but I also know that you read (occasionally) the comments posted here. If that is indeed the case, then you should know that you are selling both yourself and the WR readers short.

Perhaps Charles has an opinon on this ?

I agree with you two, I don’t want tabloid rubbish in here. I’m staying, because the people in here are great to be in here with, but if Emily continues down this shabby route, I’ll just ignore her posts from now on. She should be prepared to reply to comments she posts, as we all do.

You and everyone else here are great – even you Stub!
I also think that Emily is a lot of the time, providing us with good posts and fodder for our ramblings. I just think that perhaps she needs to be a little more selective in what she posts here, if in fact that is an option. I really have no idea of the inner workings of this blog and the decision making that goes on behind the scenes. As such, I have cut her some slack up till now.

It’s outside on grass – I don’t really care.

What bothers me is this POS post sitting on Waggle Room insulting our golfing sense.

More and more, I’m doubting this “professional journalist” claim. Chip’s right – know your audience – stop wasting space – go find a tabloid blog to write for.

You would think I enjoy being contrarian

Okay, I kind of do enjoy it.

One of the complaints I heard over the last couple years about Tiger Woods was his disrespect for the game. His swearing, his spitting, his dragging his putter on the green in frustration in one instance. While I don’t particularly care, that was one of the things Tiger said he would work on.

If no one mentions Tiger spitting on the course, the golf media is covering for their cash cow. If it is mentioned tiger spitting on the course, it is tabloid fodder.

I have no connection with Waggle Room nor any of the writers outside coming to the site regualrly

so please take this a one person’s opinion.

I don’t come here for the hard news regarding ongoing tournaments. I come here to have discussions regarding the goings on in the golf world (and thank you for that everyone). I think the ‘just the facts, ma’am’ complaints are unfair to anyone writing what they feel is interesting.

Does Emily just copy and post from other sites half the time ?

The other thing that annoyed me is just because Garcia was playing with Woods today she had to post him doing it years ago. That’s nothing to do with what Woods did today. Cheap shot if you ask me.

TH,

I’m a Tiger fan, always have been and always will be – of his golf. I watched the whole thing today and the more I watched, the more disenchanted I became. "Golf no names" in North America

Eh, Emily K….“Golf No Names” hand “Da Man” his lunch. Good on the Brit boys for calling down the spitting. Very poor etiquette on “Da Man’s” part. Three “P’s” describe the VP’s TWLFC boy; petulant, pissy and pouty. Congrats to Alvaro Quiros. Well played. Great attitude. Hits ball in palm tree takes unplayable triple bogey on seven, birdies eight, keeps his cool, scrambles back. Aces eleven and keeps ball in play for the rest of the round. What an exciting tournament. As I said yesterday there were twenty possible winners teeing off on day four. Some very good camera angles depicting the course and mega backdrop scenery of what “our” money has built in the desert. Oh, yes and #1 took it to #3 with consistent rounds.

by 1KRats on Feb 13, 2011 1:07 PM EST reply actions

I'm not asking for a blow by blow account

of each tournament, but certainly some kind of overview per round or post tournament would be welcome, hence my disappointment at the blog titles/content so far on the two tournaments being played this week.

Sure, Tiger spitting on the 12th green (the GREEN, Court) needed mentioning but if that is the only thing worth mentioning about the whole tournament, then I’m doubly disappointed.

by WendyUK on Feb 13, 2011 1:11 PM EST reply actions

It was windy

and I didn’t expect Woods to win…he isn’t a good wind player at the best of times never mind now. Streaky putting, the ones he missed he seemed to quit on.I like the way Quiros shrugs off disappointment during the round. Rory’s putting just wouldn’t drop, he shaved the hole many times. Westwood needs more rounds, he hasn’t played a lot in the last 6 months. Garcia did well this week, but did mess up a few times…hope he gets it together.

by Easingwold on Feb 13, 2011 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

Tiger made some good putts as well as missing a few

He said the wind was indeed a big factor in his driving, particularly as his new swing was not yet totally in the groove. Quiros was good to watch – a salutory lesson on how not to get down on oneself after a bad shot/bad break – even the laughs when his ball got stuck in the palm tree.

by WendyUK on Feb 13, 2011 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

Loved it when he got the binos out

to identify his ball. I remember Faldo climbing a tree at the US Open ’92 at Pebble to identify his. Going back further, Langer climbing that Ash tree here in York to play his ball onto the green back in ’81

So, can I assume everyone is pleased with the outcome in Dubai?

I see Ez offering an excuse for Westwood… And Rory’s putts just wouldn’t drop….Garcia not a work in progress anymore and what of the often vaunted Martin Kaymer? Oh that’s right….bad weather…. There was a time no so long ago when fans had favorites and when the favorites didn’t perform well fans were disappointed….Not now. Any winner is a great winner. What if it had been Jean-Baptiste Gonnet? Would that have been reason to buy a round for house? Please don’t misunderstrand here, I’m not in any way deminishing Quiors’ victory. If he’s the next Seve or the next Jose Maria, that would be great! I doubt anyone here cares if golf is popular or gets attention outside the golf media, but when youv’e got a leaderboard like you had on Sunday at Dubai, a lot of folks probably tuned out. I’m no big Tiger Woods promoter, but he served a very valuable purpose to professional golf. Those “suck-ups” as Emily put it, know it. Sponsors know it. My often foil, progolf, has said too many time to count, “Golf got along before Woods and it will get along just fine without out him” or words to that effect…. And I agree. But getting along is not growing…. When those maligned TV ratings flag, as they have, sponsors get nervous and want to pay less. That’s not a recipe for growth.

by pingforever on Feb 13, 2011 4:06 PM EST reply actions

Yes, happy with the outcome in Dubai

Quiros is not exactly an unknown over here. Gonnet would not have been such a popular winner, it’s true. Frankly I’m not overly concerned whether golf is “growing” or not. I’ll play whenever I can and watch what’s available.

Golf

Has survived a Depression and several Recessions. In all my years inside and outside of the ropes, I have never heard any players complain about their salaries. Golf survived with growth just fine pre-tiger and will survive with growth long after.

As TV viewing goes, there are many sponsors already lined up 3-4 deep to take the place of any that want to jump off a bridge if Tiger doesn’t perform.

In 2010 there were 5 new sponsors that signed on for the PGA and LPGA and thats without Tiger or Lorena.

Golf is growing Ping

beyond the PGA tour. No one this side of the pond tuned out. the best tournament was this side this week. Excuses for Westwood ? Not at all. Not counting the Ryder cup, he has harly played until these last few weeks. He is rusty. Kaymer is allowed an off week. It seems unless a player dominates as Woods has done, you can’t watch golf at all. Well, each to their own.

by Easingwold on Feb 13, 2011 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

Not at all????

I’d say it was Westwood’s choice to get rusty. Did someone stop him from playing? I think a professional golfer should come to a tournament prepared to win, not to “shake the rust off”. “Kaymer is allowed an off week”…. if that’s not an excuse I don’t know what is. All I’m saying here is it’s too easy (no pun intended) to celebrate when you really don’t care who wins…

by pingforever on Feb 13, 2011 5:33 PM EST reply actions

Westwood had to take some time off to get healthy – sometimes the timing just works out that way. He’s not in midseason form yet.

I always get a laugh out of the “allowed” statements – and this is two off form weeks for Kaymer – it happens.

Perhaps, Ping you are forgetting

Westwood has been injured the 2nd half of last year ? He had to pull out of the PGA championship, played in the Ryder Cup and just a few since then.Prepared to win ? As much as he could, due to the injury.
I cared who won. I wanted Mcllroy, personally. I hope this young lad goes to the top. He didn’t win, but that’s the way it goes. I could still marvel at all the great golf being played in conditions most Americans are not used to. Maybe you have been away from the golf course too long and become a fan who doesn’t play golf…enjoying the superstar more than the game itself…

by Easingwold on Feb 14, 2011 3:37 AM EST up reply actions

" great golf being played in conditions most Americans are not used to."

Are you serious about this? Do you really believe the desert courses in the Middle East are that much different than the desert course in the American Southwest? BTW – You don’t need to be a serious golfer to understand or intelligently comment on the game or it’s players. I enjoy watching great golf. D.A. Points eagle on Sunday was super, but I wouldn’t call D.A. a great golfer. Alex Cjeka made a double eagle in rounbd one. That’s amazing…but my guess is Alex would trade that for a par and 4 or five more birdies. I hope Westwood recovers from his injuries and absolutely scorches the year. It’s as though tournaments have been hi-jacked by about 6 or seven players… Because Woods, Westwood, McIlroy, Kaymer were at Dubai, THAT was the big tournament. The AT&T was deemed an “opposite field” event…even though Harrington and Mickelson were there.

It is well known that golf is played through the (relative calm) air on the PGA tour

And weather conditions on the European tour vary much more. To deny this is being nieve. Ask any pro (even 3 irons ). You are right about one thing Ping…where the top players play becomes the most important tournament that week. Pebble wasn’t it.

yes – here in the States, and especially at PGA Tour courses, we have screens built surrounding the golf courses to keep the wind out.

Give it a rest Eas – the wind was down this year at Pebble, but normally there is a lot of wind there. The wind was brutal for much of the British Open last year, but there have been several years recently where the wind was almost non-existent. You complain about the lack of wind when Tiger wins an Open Championship.

It depends on where the course is and how many trees there are. Watch the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond – inland and tree lined – almost no wind.

That wasn’t the middle east I was talking about – that was Hollywood…see…mummy’s roaming about doesn’t really happen. :-D
