Korean Golfers To Be Commemorated In Central Seoul With Street Name
Justifiably, the small nation of Korea is proud of its ever-growing prowess on the biggest stages in the world of golf. Via Chosunilbo, an English-language Korean newspaper:
If all goes to plan, Seoul will soon have a street dedicated to the nation's ever-swelling army of world-class golfers in the financial district of Yeouido.
The Korea Golf Association announced at an event held in the COEX Convention Center in Samseong-dong on Monday that it is currently in negotiations with municipal authorities on the deal.
"We are discussing our plan to build a street honoring the history of Korean golf with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Yeongdeungpo District Office," it said.
In what will be called "Pioneer Road," the handprints of golf stars such as Ku Ok-hee, Pak Se-ri and Choi Na-yeon, who contributed to Korean women golfers' 100 wins on the U.S. LPGA Tour, will decorate the new street.
Congratulations to the players who will have their imprints on the road. All too often, many of us overlook the challenges of being in a completely different culture at a young age and having to learn the language and ways of a new home -- while competing against the best in the world at the same time. In that difficult environment, many Koreans have done quite well. For their countrymen to recognize this with a significant honor is laudable.
