Remember David Duval?
I read an interesting article on David Duval by Iain Carter, BBC Sport Golf correspondent today.
My enduring memory of Duval was his most gracious acceptance speech on winning the 2001 Open Championship at Royal St. Lytham, and I have retained affection and respect for him.
Duval has battled neck & wrist injuries, vertigo and depression. He's run out of medical & earnings exemptions. Having had only 1 top 10 finish all season and finishing 152nd on the money list, he has the humility to go to Beaver Creek GC to begin his quest to retain his PGA Tour card for 2012, finishing 2nd. Of course he will hope for and welcome sponsor invitations but he really wants to make the effort to play his way back .
To quote Iain Carter in his article "Polar opposite of John Daly who relies on sponsor invitations to carry on his career and then abuses them by walking off the course".

Seems Double D.
was lost after the Open win. It was like, Ok what’s next. Then he went and had a family, and found himself…………happy. Golf obsession went on the back burner. I think he made choices, and i think he’d do it again. Glad to see him competing, and glad he still loves the game. If a guy chooses family, we wonder what’s wrong. If a Lady chooses family, we’re much more understanding. Funny how that works.

I think he was a bit of a tortured soul
after winning The Open, but I think you’re right, F&G, that he’d make the same choice again in choosing family. “If a guy chooses family, we wonder what’s wrong”. Well, two of us don’t. I have no illlusions that he will reach the heights again, but I wish him well in regaining his card for 2012.
I am absolutely appalled that the European Tour has offered Daly a place in Hong Kong. I think he should serve a one-year ban on every tour after his latest escapade in Australia until & unless he gives a commitment to play out the first two rounds (at least).
