Classic Fuzzy
If you missed the playoff in the Champions Tour Skins game on Sunday, you missed an absolute classic line from Fuzzy Zoeller. He had been wild off the tee all day long, putting his partner, Ben Crenshaw, into the rough time and again.
When Fuzzy stepped up to the tee on the second playoff hole, he asked Crenshaw "Ok Ben, what part of the rough you wanna be in here ?"
The gallery broke out laughing, and Crenshaw said, "Boy, I've bailed some hay today."
That is too much a classic one-liner to not be in the main blog. --CB

I still think that Oldsmobile (GM) made too much
out of his remark 14 years ago…But, that’s all tied in with the Political Correctness crap…He doesn’t have a Racest bone in him….I miss the Polish, Jewish, Irish, etc jokes that the comedians years back used to tell….And nobody took offense either, cause no one did it to be Racist….STUB

It’s hard being you, Stub. You can glean that from all of your tales of woe and suffering in that post.

Sounds like my Mom. She was the Catholic type, which I suppose is not too far removed from their Hebrew brethren. She could prepare us a great Thanksgiving meal and make us feel bad for enjoying it.
She’s been gone nearly 18 years and not a day goes by that I don’t miss her. Those were some good times. LOL.

can you say
Don Rickles?

The punishment didn't fit the crime...
but the biggest mistake Fuzzy made that day was not realizing his audience had grown.
If I recall correctly, Fuzzy made his jokes after the third round, when Woods’ victory was all but secured, The fact that a black man was going to win this golf tournament was a big story not just in the golf world, not just in the sports world, but in the general news world as well. Especially considering the Masters fell a few days before the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball (President Clinton ended up inviting Woods to participate in a Jackie Robinson celebration mere days after the tournament; a invitation Woods declined, possibly because he understood he wasn’t the Jackie Robinson of golf). That kind of racial synergy was irresistible for the media at large.
The golf world, while understanding the story was more about the phenom Tiger Woods fulfilling his golf destiny and the sheer spectacle of the performance, wasn’t particularly upset that this person of color was singlehandedly destroying the stereotype of golf being a racist game just for rich white men. Three years after Jack Nicklaus said to an interviewer that blacks have “different muscles that react in different ways”, this stereotype could be put to bed.
The Fuzzy makes the jokes that brought the stereotype back to the surface. At a time where everyone was looking.
I’m sure, like the example of Don Rickles below, Fuzzy made fun of everyone and didn’t see any particular reason this joke would be special. Unfortunately for him, television didn’t have video of that, just the fried chicken comments (as an aside, I never understood why racists use fried chicken as a slight. Who doesn’t like fried chicken?) Fuzzy became the proverbial turn in the punch bowl, sullying everyone’s good feelings about Tiger’s performance and paid the price.
Two....I don't think too much would have been made of the remark, but 2 sports writers (1 covered
the tracks, and I don’t recall what the other one did, but it wasn’t golf…they kept writing articles in the New York Times, and that was all she wrote for Fuzz…I remember he flew home in his plane he named the Bogy Bird and told his wife he may have to walk away from Tour Golf…After Oldsmobile pulled out, so did Target…(remember those adds he did hitting balls?)…that was all of what, 14-15 years ago, and that’s all people think of when they read or hear about Fuzzy…Too bad, he’s a really nice man….STUB

Very sad….I read that he said it haunts him every day. A victim of the stupidity of Political Correctness.

That's the side of the coin we didn't see than...
The spin on everything,,,(except from politicians) didn’t exist….people told it like it was and nobody took offence, because non was intended….It took the Liberial Media (duck, here come Diana) to really show what could happen when they started beating the drum…I believe it does…There was a remark made at the Champions dinner one time, at the masters, I can’t remember who said it, or what was said, but I was told that it damm near came down to fist-a-cuffs, and guys had to be seperated at the table…All in support of Fuzzy….Oh, did I give you the temp. of today,,,Full sunshine…great day for Golf….I just thought of this…Did you ever watch Bay Watch on TV….Well, think Pamela Anderson, only 5 ft tall….Hold that thaught my friend….STUB

Let's not totally let Fuzzy off the hook
He made what unarguably can be called off-color remarks while he was endorsing products. When you are getting $ from companies to wear their logos, different rules apply.
If Tiger Woods can be dropped by sponsors for offending America’s sensibilities, Fuzzy Zoeller can as well.

Off-Color
Eh, twonose….I think poor taste remarks would be more appropriate. Was he intentionally demeaning Tiger Woods? He says not others say so. It was unfortunate. He paid the price. Tiger Woods is paying the price.
I can go with poor taste.
I’ve said this regarding people in the entertainment industry and it applies to athletes who endorse products. It isn’t free speech if you are getting paid to do it.
Two.. I can go along with some of what your saying,
but he never said anything “off color” while doing the product endorsements….The remark was said during a :Private conversation, someone over heard it and than the cat was out of the bag…You know, I still tell Polish jokes, Jewish Jokes, Irish jokes, etc and I sure have no racist agenda…I sometimes think that the Sponsors, and yes, they put a heck of a lot of money up…shouldn’t be doing it, if they have people pouring over every word and coma to see if something is amiss…jist MHO….STUB
STUB
It wasn't a private conversation
There was a camera in plain sight and he was performing towards it if not directly to it.
I forget the sponsor, but I know Paul Casey got dropped for his ‘hate Americans’ comment around Ryder Cup time.
If a company feels the relationship with an endorser will cost business, that endorser is toast. That’s not political correctness; it is just business

true – the question was about what Tiger was going to put on the menu for the next year’s Champions Dinner. I don’t know if it was media who tossed out the question or just someone walking by. It wasn’t during a regular interview where the camera was at shoulder level and a reporter standing next to him. He was walking somewhere behind the clubhouse.
Fathom the odd hypocrisy that the government wants every citizen to prove that they have health insurance, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.
