Around SBN: The Worst Team Ever Projected?

Pavin's Picks: Woods, Johnson, Cink, and ...Fowler?

After Charley Hoffman took down the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday evening, there was brief speculation that he could slide into the fourth - and lone questioned - captain's pick for Corey Pavin.

The prevailing sentiment, though, was that it was probably not good enough to oust either JB Holmes or Rickie Fowler from their perches. Holmes as a pivotal part of the '08 squad and Fowler having the endorsement of Phil Mickelson, Pavin had strong cases for each going into Boston.

Perhaps we now know Pavin's fourth choice - in addition to Tiger Woods, Stewart Cink, and Zach Johnson - based upon a Rickie Fowler tweet from moments ago.

Feels nice to sleep in a bit...going to relax a little and then head to the course this afternoon for a little practiceless than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone

Steve Sands of Golf Channel is reporting that Pavin will select Fowler and the aforementioned - and experienced - three to round out his team.

The announcement is from the New York Stock Exchange at 10:30am ET.

I feel bad for Pavin

Being pressured into picking woods. I can think of 5 other players a lot more deserving to be on the team this year.

I agree. I still would not pick Tiger, even with the encouraging signs of late.

Jumpn......you've got that right......

Zach Johnson, van Pelt, Kim and Fowler

if you rank players according to my patented ‘world ranking points scored this year in big tournaments’ (ie that last year the winner got 50 ranking points or more). They include 4 majors, 3 WGCs so far, Players, 5 more in europe so far, 10 more in US up to today). Furyk wouldn’t be in the team.

On the same ranking system,Europe team would have had Casey, Rose, Karlsson and Quiros, and no Harrington, Kahn, Fisher and Hanson.

Sorry, that was for progolf and Ryan

I wanted to know the four Americans they would pick before Tiger. And then, I’d ask if they thought Tiger wouldn’t play as well as their choices in October or is this is a defacto suspension due to conduct unbecoming to golf.

oops

I realised that after I posted

The four ahead of Tiger? Bo Van Pelt, Charley Hoffman, Ryan Palmer. (Really, I only need three.)

Van Pent and Palmer are steady, consistent players...

and their best doesn’t come close to Tiger’s best. And consistent is now how I would describe Hoffman.

VanPelt, Dustin Johnson, Hunter Mahan, JB Holmes

To me this is a team effort and players either earn their way on a team or they get chosen based on current performance.

Tigers performance this year is questionable at best and his record in Ryder Cup speaks for itself. 10-13-2 is not great

Two......Anybody in the top 50 that.....

didn’t make it. Tiger’s #1 ranking shows how silly the world rankings are, obviously based on distant past performance not on how he is currently playing. He hasn’t won this year, he has a terrible RC record and he is not playing very well.

I grant you Tiger isn't playing exceptional golf right now

but (outside of Charlie Hoffman this week) what American not already on the team is?

As for the ‘Tiger has a terrible RC record’ meme, let’s go to the stats (the second row is singles play):

Tiger Woods 10-13-2 3-1-1
Phil Mickelson 10-14-6 3-4-1
Jim Furyk 8-13-3 4-1-1
Steve Stricker 0-2-1 0-1-0
Stewart Cink 4-7-4 1-3-0
Zach Johnson 1-2-1 0-1-0
Hunter Mahan 2-0-3 0-0-1

What American has been lighting it up again?

If one of the arguments for not picking Tiger Woods is his bad RC record

it is vital to weigh that record against his peers. Tiger played his first RC in 1997. Beginning then, Europe is 4-2. The RC records of both Mickelson and Furyk are worse; why are they not considered poor RC players?

Twonuse

I was regarding “THIS SEASONS PLAY” overall, The same goes for Mickelson being so unreliable, but he played his way on to the team and Pavin had no other choice.

I'm sure there is a 'horrible RC record post' somewhere above us...

By the way, if you are saying if there was any way Pavin could oust Mickelson from the team due to his erratic play he should, we have two things to disagree on.

O well

The world would be a very boring place if everyone agreed on everything.

Heck - talk about negative thinking

So just a bunch of losers then? It’s all about how they play on the day – nothing else matters.

by WendyUK on Sep 7, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

True

My point was to dispel the idea that Tiger was a poor RC player. The truth is every American was getting a bunch of losses in the last decade.

Less blame should be shouldered by the Americans and more credit given to the Europeans.

Jumpn

I agree there was pressure to pick Woods but there is a lot more to it than that. We are talking about one of the best players in history after all. Granted he’s had a poor year, but he’s still capable of doing things no other player can do. He’s one of the best pressure putters the game has ever seen, and has been solid in singles play. Pressure or not, I don’t see how you leave a guy like this off the team. To me if we’re saying a guy like this is not one of America’s 12 best players then we’re off our collective rocker. But hey, Let’s just see how he does, if he goes 0-5 then you certainly have a point. We have our team, and we should all support them.

T-head.....

I wasn’t aware that being “one of the best players in history” was a criteria for making the team, otherwise, I would have been hoping for Jack, Arnie and Watson to be captains picks. The fact that he WAS a great putter is meaningless right now during his “I’m not a very good putter” era. He is also, as you said having a “poor year”, while there are others having good years, certainly better than Tigers and are as deserving of a spot as Tiger.

One other thing. He is carrying so much baggage right now they will have to charter an extra plane just to carry it……..Seems like we did pretty well two years ago without him and the distractions he brings.

Being one of the best players in history may not be a criteria as you point out, but I’d hardly call it a negative thing. I’m merely pointing out the obvious reasons why Pavin would pick him and there are reasons to pick him. I bet he’ll be on your fantasy team this week, so evidently he has some value as a player…lol Look man, as I said, let’s just see how he does, maybe he’ll surprise you and he hasn’t turned into a 12 handicapper yet.

The distractions didn't exist two years ago

I will grant you the possibility that his presence would not have allowed other players (Kim and Weekley come to mind) to blossom the way they did in Kentucky. But if that is the case, it is on the other American pros, not Tiger.

Besides, I’d like give the credit for the US win to the players on the team, not the ones who were missing due to injury.

by TwoNuse on Sep 7, 2010 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

The list of Americans in the top 50 not on the team is as follows...

16 Anthony Kim
23 Sean O’Hair
31 Nick Watney
34 Lucas Glover
44 Bo Van Pelt
45 Kenny Perry
46 Ben Crane
49 Ryan Moore

Zach Johnson is 17th, Rickie Fowler is 33rd, Stewart Cink is 35th.

Anthony Kim and his thumb? Kenny Perry? Sounds less like getting the best team and more like Tiger Fatigue to me.

Gawd amighty, my eye balls is gittin

tired readin all this who is and what is or what if stuff….My Take? Lets stop all the hog slop with the rankings this and the rankings that….doesn’t meant a hill a beans….Forget the 2 years points to get you on the team….another crock of you know what…..Ya got a Captain….he picks his assistants……Than…..LET HIM PICK HIS 12 PLAYERS…..What are we going to have/see…..some of the best tough golf there is….and isn’t the whole point of the cup….tough head to head golf…..With the 12 best from each side, let them stand in the fairway and duke it out….shot for shot…..I want to see great golf….on both sides….Having the 24 guys who are the hotest going at it insures that……jist sayin…..STUB
