Monty Says He Has Made His Day One Pairings, But Maybe Not

Colin Montgomerie has to be anxious to get to October 1. On that day at Celtic Manor, he can finally begin the work of actually captaining the European Ryder Cup team. The worry of any kind of October surprise courtesy of his local Olan Mills - AKA Paula Tagg - will be gone and the focus will be solely on his game of chess with Corey Pavin.

Monty said in a presser yesterday that he has nailed down all of the pairings for the eight matches contested on Friday. He intends to use all 12 players on his roster. Good thing because Paul Azinger has noted that players which compete in every session lose their singles match on Sunday about 80% of the time.

Montgomerie also said he plans to pair the two Ulstermen - Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell - together. Same is true for the Molinari brothers. Well, color me surprised. Monty revealed the most obvious pairings. These four go together like peanut butter and jelly. Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy.

Where's Ryan Seacrest to take it to commercial before we come back with the real results?

Jason Sobel reports that Monty may not be entirely truthful about his line-up, though. Luke Donald told Sobel he is not aware of the day one pairings. So, did Monty tell himself? Did he send an e-mail or a text message and guys just won't get it until they're uncomfortably sitting on the practice ground wondering who they're going to play with on Friday?

Could it be supplemental gamesmanship by Donald to give a sense of European discombobulation?

No matter. The Americans aren't paying attention anyhow. Everyone who doesn't like fuscia is still complaining about the Saturday cardigan from the Lisa Pavin line. Frankly, I find them delightful. Then again, it is really out of Steve Stricker's comfort zone to wear anything ROY or IV in the color spectrum.

Ok – I’m not following this one. Who are you trying to smack around, RB ? Monty was asked a question and he gave a couple of possible answers – one extremely obvious in the Molinari brothers – winners of the World Cup. He didn’t say which matches they were going to play – he didn’t even say they were going to play both matches on Friday. Monty gave a good answer to another assinine media question.

Are you smacking Jason Sobel around ? (something that should be done more often, by the way) Wow – what insight ! Monty isn’t writing this in stone. AMAZING !!!!! Give that man a raise and fire every other golf writer in the world. Sobel has it locked down.

Then, to top it off, Sobel gets “backup” on this breakthrough in golf journalism from Luke Donald – who is ALSO smarter than the idiotic question. Even if Donald knew the pairings, he certainly isn’t going to tell them to a weanie like Sobel.

Again, RB – who are you smacking around with this ? There is nothing to learn from this. Gee – the captains and players aren’t going to give away any plans 3 weeks in advance. Woo-eee.

First, why the dislike for Sobel? He’s one of the best out there.

Second, not trying to smack anyone. Just saying that Monty revealed the most obvious pairings, so I didn’t get anything out of it.

Sobel is a terrific BOOK writer – not so much with the day to day article writing. He makes way too many factual errors. Remember all the times Jempty had a field day pointing out his mistakes ?

His two books with the Vision 54 ladies are excellent.

Come on – were you really expecting Monty to lay out his pairings ?

Peter Hanson w/d from Vivendi

with a chest infection. Now, wouldn’t it be interesting if he was still poorly and Casey replaced him on Euro RC team? Anyone hoping Overton catches ’flu?
