$25 Million Bribe Doesn't Snag Tseng for China

China loves winning. From devaluing their currency with pegged valuation to having underage girls competing for Olympic gold, the People's Republic has a shady track record. With golf just six years away from having its first go in the Olympics in a century, China is looking to stock up on women's talent - from other countries.

Yani Tseng, a two-time major winner this year and likely LPGA Tour Player of the Year, has apparently turned down a $25 million endorsement offer from a Chinese business which would've required her to embrace Chinese citizenship. The long-term intent was to recruit Tseng in order for her to compete on the Chinese golf team in Rio in 2016.

Sure, we could go into the geopolitical conflict between Taiwan and China. China says Taiwan is a part of their country. Taiwan says no. Tseng's passport says she is a citizen of the Republic of China - not part of China.

Some countries dispute China's claim, like Costa Rica, who got a sweet bridge out of the deal. Little League says Taiwan is Chinese Taipei.

Could this be a tacit admission by a Chinese business that Taiwan citizenship doesn't mean Chinese citizenship? More likely, it is just a play against the International Olympic Committee's recognition of Chinese Taipei as its own country.

Then again, this news came to us courtesy of Apple Daily - the people behind the hilariously realistic simulation videos of Tiger Woods' demise. So, maybe it's best if we assume that level of legitimacy to this story.

Heard this the other day – great story – and it shows you just how strong the feelings the Taiwanese have against the Red Chinese.

Red Chinese?

Wow, I haven’t heard the inhabitants of the Chinese mainland called that since the 70s.

Just because you don’t like hearing things like that, the term is still used. You’re a person who still insists on using the derogatory “tea baggers” after feigning ignorance to the meaning of the term and continuing to use it after you were told.

Court in defense of Diane

I heard the term, “Tea Baggers” mentioned 30 times a day on the news the last few weeks. It’s also in the print media. It is what it is.

sorry – I have to call BS on that one. No news agency will use the word tea baggers. They were called out on that term last year and they stopped. If you see it or hear it, it is from some moron being interviewed or quoted.

I did not feign ignorance. I’m 63 and not involved gay male culture. I had no idea what it meant. My point in using it a month or so ago was suggest that just because a legitimate term has been co-opted to describe some sexual activity, it doesn’t mean that term can’t be used for its original intended purpose. If I made tea using a bag, rather than pouring hot water over loose leaves, I would be a tea bagger.

As far as China is concerned, the macro economy and political discourse is controlled by the central government. The micro economy is as capitalist as you can get. The old descriptor, Communist (or Red) China, doesn’t reflect the current reality. Unless your reality is informed by the people whose main purpose in life is the scare the crap out of you.

D – you have used it time and again since being told what a derogatory term it is. We had a good laugh when you “apologized” and explained that you didn’t know what it meant and said you wouldn’t use it anymore – but you haven’t.

I can't believe I let you change the subject

I was applauding Tseng for standing firm for her country, which has been standing firm against communist China for decades instead of just taking the money.

Well court I have heard it on CNN and World News tonight.

Read it in the Boston Globe while I was up in Mass. Shame on the silly Tea Party for naming it just that. They must have been aware of the possible comments they were gonna get from it. I have a male gay employee and he thinks its all quite funny. So does my lesbian baby sister. lol

And I haven’t used the term “time and again.” Not counting today, when you brought it up, I’ve used it in only two previous threads. The first was when Mike (Life in the Rough) said it was offensive so I discontinued using it in the discussion. The second was when I was using it make a point, with em66, about reclaiming a legitimate term for its original intended purpose. Pop culture should not be allowed to debase the language.

Nice try D.......but no one is buying what you're selling.

“reclaiming a legitimate term for its original intended purpose”, what a joke…….excuse me while I laugh uncontrollably.

Court, I agree. Kudos to Tseng

As for Diane, you’ll just have to forgive her. She can’t help it. Libs seem to lose all their self proclaimed “sensitivity”, “intellect”, and “tolerance” when it has to do with anyone who might disagree with them. Her “teabagger” comments to me were definitely meant as an insult, but it doesn’t bother me because it just exposes her for who she really is…..insensitive, intolerant and definitely not intellectual. Go Figure.

And I agree, kudos to Tseng

I’m not sure there’s enough money to bribe her because if she took it she’d never be able to go home again. The animosity of rank-and-file Taiwanese toward the mainland rivals that of the Cuban exiles in Florida for their home island.

You’re also entitled to call me all those names, but doing so would carry more weight if you could intelligently explain your positions, something you’ve never done.

O' Enlightened one......to use your

terminology, my “intent” was not to call you names, but show the lunacy of the liberal mantra……“Enlightened, Intellectual, Sensitive, and Tolerant”, none of which are displayed in your “teabagger” insult. It does however fit real well into your hero’s (Alinsky) rule of personal destruction. If I were to call you names, things like hypocrite, phony and deceitful would come to mind……of course I would never call you any of those things.

You keep asking me to “intelligently” explain my positions, again another common liberal ploy…..you know who I am and what I believe, just as I know you and your positions. If you require some sort of dissertation, I can supply it, but you won’t like it…….:)

here's what I don't get

Why do you exhibit such vitriol toward people who hold beliefs different than yours? I don’t need a dissertation, just some insight into why you feel the way you do.

Diane....just where are you

getting the phrase "Animosity Cuban exiles in Florida feel for their home island? I have several Ex-Pat Cuban friends in Florida and else where, and They left home to escape a Communist Government, but certainly feel no animosity to the home land….If the truth be know, without the sanctions we put against Cuba due to Russia’s influence, they would be happy to go back and forth…Please be more accurate with your statements….STUB

Sorry, Stub. I should have been more specific. Repressive “home island” government would have been more correct. Will you buy that?
