What If Majors Were Valued the Same as Playoff Events?
This is just a quickie post in response to John Feinstein's largely lauded, but obvious examples of where the FedExCup may overstate its worth.
(For what it's worth, I wrote an article similar to Feinstein's in May 2006 - before they ever even contested the first FedExCup. Nothing's changed here except time and the point values. I'm kind of over it at this point.)
Primarily, Junior - as only Tony Kornheiser can call him - doesn't like that Matt Kuchar got more points from winning The Barclays than Phil Mickelson did for taking the Masters. (The other three major winners got nothing because they're not PGA Tour members.) Feinstein also takes issue that Boston winner Charley Hoffman is in a better position to win the $10 million prize than Mickelson - and others - despite not even playing in a single major.
Since I've always been told to suggest solutions when I complain, let's hypothetically placate Feinstein and see how this would pan out going into East Lake.
Currently, winners of regular Tour events get 500 points, majors (and The Players) 600 points, and WGC winners earn 550. Playoff winners get 2500 points. For Phil, who sits in 10th place right now, he would get 1900 more points. He would still lag behind Matt Kuchar by some 800 points going into East Lake, but would be third on the roll heading there. He would have a "win and win" proposition to take down the $10 million prize.
Let's take the opposite approach. Say we reduce the value of Playoff wins to that of a major. Does that make it any better? Not really. Short of basically doubling the point value of the majors compared to a Playoff event, Mickelson - who has had a rather mediocre year sans Augusta - wouldn't get the advantage Feinstein would like.
Feinstein (accurately) says players would trade in up to 50 FedExCups for one major. So who gives a crap if Lefty has an advantage in something that's going to go away anyhow? It may not be in 2012, but one day, it is likely that the FedExCup will go away. The majors will endure.
I agree that the majors are empirically more valuable in golf lore than these four tournaments, but what's the problem in throwing around a bunch of confetti and trying to convince everyone that a party is worth attending? Otherwise, we'd all be here complaining about the lull in golf between the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup - an unofficial end to a neverending season. Remember those columns? I do. I wrote 'em.
The points concept behind the Playoffs could be shed altogether and I'd be a happier man for it. I still believe the FedExCup is miles better than the alternative, though. Make it "survive and advance," leading to some kind of zany - and preferably match play - showdown for the moolah. In the end, it's a real playoff and no one's feelings get hurt about valuing tournaments.

The summer heat wave is mostly over so we can comfortably get back to the course ourselves. Does anyone really care about pre-Silly Season? Or is this just something else golf media wants us to argue about while sitting in our cubicles?

I think, more or less, it’s just something to bitch about. There’s no golf this week except in Europe and the N’Wide guys.

Ryan, forget that clown from the
golf channel…I think they took his big mouth as the model on the clown at the local putt putt..On to of that, he has to say something to get his check on Friday….Ok…lets try this on….Forget everything else…never mind points for this that or anything…..We go strictly with World Golf Rankings…I don’t like them either, but we need something…..Take the top 30 and let them do match play….As fans, we don’t really care who wins, we do get to see some good golf tho…what say ya o wise wizzard? STUG
We need the rankings to ensure
the best players play in the majors and other top events. World rankings were the first step to the world tour, which will come. The Fed Ex and the Race to Dubai were made to force tour players to attend the season ending events. That’s why the points are so large compared to majors…everyone will play those who can. Blackmail to a degree. You can try to make an average car look like a racing car, but it won’t preform like one. The Fed Ex is all hype and nothing to get excited about.
HEAT WAVE OVER?????
It’s freakin 98 here again today and the forecast is upper 90’s through Sunday……..and no rain in weeks. I’mmmmmmmmmmmmmm Meltinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng.

sorry, em
i didn’t think of our friends in the deep south. Up here (Ohio), the temperature has only dropped a little, but the humidity has decreased to normal summer levels. It’s not great, but I no longer turn into a sweat ball on the practice green.

Didn't know you're in Ohio, Diane. If you ever get matched up with the famous Heather Jones
in a local tourney, lemme know who wins.
Heather is a couple of hours up I-71. She would win, no question about it.

Yeah, right!
You sound like an amazing player. Thank goodness I haven’t had to play you. ;o)
As for Ohio, it definitely grows on you. So many of my friends from D.C. visit and say, “Wow! I see why you like it here so much!” (yes, they say it with shock in their voice)

uh, huh...
my current index is 23.5. Heather, I have no doubt you’d take the match 9 and 8, unless you strung me along for a few holes because we were having so much fun.

D.....I was born and spent my childhood in Ohio.
I was born in Columbus and my dad graduated from OSU. I grew up in a little town North of Delaware. (Ashley….very small farm town). We moved south in 1964 and the last time I was up there was in 89, when my Grandmother died. I still cheer for the Buckeyes and the Browns.

that's good farm country
I moved to Cincinnati 23 years ago for a job. When the job ended I realized I had a life here and had no interest in starting all over again, so I stuck around.

Diane..I once had an Aunt and Uncle
who lived in Cincinnati…Plus, I know where Ohio is on the map…does that count for anything ?…STUB
Some time ago
I worked as a free-lance pianist in more than several bars, dance halls in and around Cincinnati and even played as a single up on Reading Road on Sunday afternoons where I worked with Rosemary Clooney and her sister, Betty.
Later when I got good sense and got out of the saloons and earned a college degree, I worked for P&G.
Don't worry, nothing will be allright.
wow
Look at all the Cincinnati connections around here. Like any city it has its issues, but there are rolling hills and green space all over town.

When I was in LA
I became a Laker fan for life. And I still follow the Dodgers…the Cincinnatti Reds became the team I didn’t like. In the early ’70’s, they always seemed to beat the Dodgers and even now I look for the results. Johnny Bench in particular, always seemed to play well against them. I remember a double header, when the Dodgers seemed poised to win both, he hit homers to win it for the Reds.Time goes fast.
Going back a few years more, I remember as a kid being a fan
of the Cincinnati Redlegs’ Ted Kluszewski, home run hitter.
I'm still reading your question marks.
There’s a lot of them. I’ll get back to you when done.
i'm not originally from here
and Cincinnati fans are the biggest crybabies I’ve ever known. I refuse to root for either the Reds or the Bungles, unless the opponent is the Dodgers or the Cowboys.

Hang in there EM
it’s going to change some day….We got the same thing in Dallas, ..high temps in the upper 90’s, humidity and ozone about the same….At least, we got some rain last week and this one too..In fact, last week we got 10 inches in one day due to that tropical storm that came up here…Kept lookin to see if there were webs between my toes…nope, just usual dirt…hahaha…..STUB
Glad you got some rain......
we got nuttin! It sprinkled one day for about 15 minutes and that’s been it for weeks. Our course is in great shape, they’ve done a great job keeping it green.

it's not going to matter much anyway

I love the idea of a end of the season match play event. There is no match play major and that’s what could really separate the playoffs from the regular season. Plus if they did it NCAA Basketball style it gives us all a reason to fill out brackets and try to win some cash.
It's a neat idea...
but as others have mentioned in other threads throughout the past years/months, match play can make for some potentially awful TV – and Professional golf is all about the ratings.
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
I happen to like the FedEx Cup format...
and not just because 2 of my favorite golfers (Kuch and Stricker) are in a “control their own destiny” position. I like that there are “cuts” each week and players have to step it up if they want a shot at winning. I think the points system has gotten better and the top 30 players left are a great representation of the best players on Tour right now. Over at Kerplookee Fantasy golf, I do a little “Pro’s Picks” each week – we pick 4 “aces” (any guy we think will win) and 4 dark horses – the dark horses have to be outside of the top 50 on the OWGR and cannot have won a tourney in 2009 or 2010 – there are only 2 guys out of the 30 who qualify, so I’d say we’ve got some decent players in the field.
With the whole Mickelson thing, besides the Masters, what has Phil really done to earn a higher seed for next week? Kuchar is number one on the money list and is also the number 1 seed – I’d say that is a pretty good reflection of a decent point system.
I’ll be sorry to see it go in a few years. GO Matt & Steve!! :-)

I'm with you, red
not necessarily the format (I’d just take the top 125 players on the money list, & just make cuts based on play, starting afresh each time), but I am grateful to have some decent players/tournaments to watch in the autumn. Go Matt, Luke & Paul!!
MATT, LUKE & PAUL ???
weren’t those guys the waiters at the Last Supper ???? j/k…STUB
Only you, Stub....
only you. (I did laugh…and then felt guilty about it). :-)
