Little League & the Ryder Cup: Why Participation Matters

The Ryder Cup has almost every advantage over its younger, less compelling brother called the Presidents Cup. There is deeper heritage. It (although at a lower prior rate) introduces American audiences to players we don't typically see here. The opponent wins sometimes, or at least ties.

A potential flaw of the Ryder Cup, though, is the ability of captains to hide players. Shy of the full roster singles matches on Sunday, the other four sessions of the matches feature only eight player from each side. In other words, a player is only truly guaranteed one match by making the squad.

Jeff Overton, you may want to talk to someone like Andrew Coltart - sat by Mark James throughout his 1999 appearance - to understand what that feels like.

The case can be made that giving captains the power to sit up to four players for all but one session demeans the Cup and the competition. After all, 17 of 24 players earned their way onto these two teams. It's like making an all-star team in Little League. Yeah, it is an honor to make the team, but it means even more to play.

At the same time, the Presidents Cup's no-hiding format allows for some real stinker matches. Put the two lousiest players together, send them out there, and hope somebody wins a point. These team matches are designed to bring us great match play golf, not fulfill some parent's desire to see their kid play for the $50 they plunked out to enroll their kid in a sport.

The right of a Ryder Cup captain to sit players can be a good thing. It is a risk - effectively fielding a smaller team at the cost of his men's stamina. The gamble can pay off, or it could fail. It makes the captain an even more real actor in the results of the matches. That said, hiding the weakest links for two of three days can be seen as the easy way out of things.

Maybe the happy medium is to force a captain to put all twelve players into play at least once during each day of the competition. Every player gets three matches guaranteed. It keeps some strategy in it for the captains - alternate shot or best ball? - while forcing them to field a full team.

They say a team is only as powerful as its weakest link. Up until now in the Ryder Cup, that hasn't been true. But with a simple twist in the rules, it can be while maintaining an enhanced level of gamesmanship that the Presidents Cup can lack.

I was glad that Mark James was the losing captain

He not only sat out Andrew Coltart (whom he had selected instead out of pure spite instead of Faldo) but he also sat out Jarno Sandelin & Jean van de Velde until the singles. The latter complained bitterly that there was no way the 3 could have given of their best under these circumstances. His gamble didn’t pay off, that’s for sure. I prefer your “happy medium” – treat them like a team.

Yeah, I should’ve included Sandelin and VdV. Effectively, he played with 9 guys and it cost him (albeit by the smallest of margins).

Agree 100% Wendy

James almost got away with winning it, but to blow Coltart’s trumpet like he did to justify not picking Faldo, then not using him until he had to, says a lot about Mark James.

This kind of goes along with the idea that the longest drive counts the same as a one inch putt. The “weakest” player (a really bad term for a guy who is probably ranked in the top 30 in the world) on the team’s points count the same as the “strongest” player’s points.

I really hate the idea that you’ll always get a great match if you put the top guys head to head. It just ain’t so. Ask West Virginia about that powerhouse James Madison team last week. Then look at a couple of BCS National Championship games with Ohio State – REAL stinkers.

The captains have to put out the best combinations they can, plus take into consideration style of play, personalities, and, as you mentioned, stamina…then he has to be willing to change his plans if someone’s game goes south or a matchup doesn’t work out. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson haven’t been our best better-ball and alternate shot players over the years.

So, would you be in favor of keeping things how they are or going to something closer to Pres Cup?

I think they are just fine the way they are. Honestly, it wouldn’t make any difference one way or the other to me except for the ability of the captain to rest a player or two who might need it.

If Monty knew that Westwood HAD to play all 5 matches with that injury, he might be pushing for him to sit out. This way, we get Westwood at least part of the time.

That’s a really good point RE: Westwood.

Baring an actual injury, what is, or why is stamina

even being an issue here…This is golf…if it wears ya down so bad…3 days…than your better off taking up Curling…..Now…I have said for a long time, each of the guys should play 3 matches….not just a singles on Sunday….If that is the case, the player wasn’t thought very much of in the first place…never mind rankings….It’s still a Captains prerogative who plays when…I think the 3 match rule, would let us see better golf….jist my take on this…..STUB
