Agent: Westwood Will Play in Ryder Cup

Last week, Waggle Room tried to contact Lee Westwood's management team for comment on his progress in rehabbing the calf that has kept him out of action since mid-August. No such luck. Maybe no decision had been made yet, but it appears Westwood is ready to pronounce he will play.

Through a spokesperson at his representation firm ISM, the BBC was told, "Lee will be at the Ryder Cup. He is a few days ahead of schedule and everything is progressing very well."

Westwood is apparently working on his short game and hitting about five irons in his bag.

For a guy that had a reported blood clot in his calf, how bad was his injury really? Until Westwood shows up at Celtic Manor and can prove he is capable of playing to his skill level, Monty has to keep Paul Casey on speed dial. If Westwood is unable to play at Celtic Manor, Monty would make a captain's pick to replace Edoardo Molinari - the final captain's pick who would actually make the team on merit if Westwood withdrew.

That seems unlikely to happen, but maybe Paul Casey should not decorate his living room with American flags quite yet.

So, it’s either the dreaded “vote of confidence” or Lee Westwood will indeed represent the Euros in the Cup.

That clears things up rather nicely! :-)

I didn’t exactly feel confidence in Westwood playing after the article, but that’s just me.

RB – I don’t have time to look it up right now – but isn’t there an injury replacement rule if someone gets hurt during actual play ? Or do they have to play with 11 of someone starts the RC and can’t play following an injury ?

Court - I think you can call up a replacement to the team due to injury

up to the eve of tournament. Thereafter, you’re down to 11, allowed to switch annnounced names due to injury/illness for the foursomes/fourballs; if anyone unable to play singles due to injury/illness, opposing side names a player to fall out. May be wrong though.

Ryan

I believe that Justin Rose has been nominated the replacement, should Westwood not be fit.

I thought that, too, but then a report from Lawrence Donegan came out yesterday indicating that’s not necessarily the case.

We certainly have a lot of what if's goiing

on here….Instead of conjecture, I think I will wait to see who is and who isn’t going to be playing….another thing….If Lee plays, Wendy will have her loverly Lee to go against her Stinky Cinky….in both cases, it’s a win, win for her…Oh and Wendy….I just read where some “KILLER SHRIMP” were attacking your home grown variety….How bad is it?…They come from Asia some place, so don’t blame us here…..STUB

by thinker on Sep 14, 2010 12:05 PM EDT reply actions

NO,NO...not Crayfish...These were

labeled KILLER SHRIMP by your own people and it’s just become a real problem evidently..They kill and eat your home variety….better check this out…..STUB

by thinker on Sep 14, 2010 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I know them as crayfish

and they do eat our home variety and very aggressive too.

by Easingwold on Sep 14, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, STUB - I know

The Killer Shrimp are from the Caspian Sea, but wringing your hands is no defence when you (personally, obviously) sent Killer Crayfish 2 years ago. Actually both species are in the rivers, where our weedy local species are getting seen off. It’s the way of the world though, innit?

by WendyUK on Sep 14, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

NO, NO, I didn't have anything to do with

them…I may send some to Jumpin tho…hahaha…Have you eaten any ? How do they taste?….How big are they ?…..STUB

No economic harvesting of river shrimp/crayfish here

Plenty of imported sea harvested ones, however. I’m always sad that our tiny *brown shrimp/spider crabs are all exported to France/Spain as no-one has been bothered to eat them here for years.

*Can only get them as potted shrimp nowadays.

If the Cup starts, and Westwood is injured

a US player will be drawn out, and stand down. This happened in ’91 and ’93. Pate was injured, Gilford sat out the singles, then Torrance was injured and Wadkins sat out the singles.

by Easingwold on Sep 14, 2010 12:40 PM EDT reply actions

That only applies to the singles matches though, Easing.

when the match is considered halved. If the pairings have already been announced for the other matches, you can substitute another player (from the existing team) due to illness/injury.

Paul is going mountain-biking that week

and will have his mobile phone switched off. Take that, Monty!!

I’m pulling for Casey to win the Tour Championsthip – win the FEC – AND win the Player of the Year award.

I suspect that Monty will pick someone – I really do think that.

Wise move.

I’m off up to Northumberland for a few days Monday next week 6 of us up there for 2 rounds of golf. I’m hoping the rain dosen’t follow me this time !

by Easingwold on Sep 14, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Hah !

I’ll be down south next August to put that right, lol.

by Easingwold on Sep 14, 2010 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Right - thanks for the warning

I’ll just go to the south of France for the month then.

by WendyUK on Sep 14, 2010 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Lol

Only ever been to France once. For a week in ’78…sailed up the river to Nantes, we were part of the NATO fleet at the time. Enjoyed it, from what i can remember. One of the places I must go to one day is Marseilles…something about it…got to go.

Are you telling me...

neither of you are going to Celtic Manor? I’m stunned!

I can't speak for Wendy

but I think they charge way too much. I go to the Open from time to time and they think of the fans. 130 Euros for Sunday shows just what a money making machine the Ryder Cup has become. I’ll watch it at home. And it usually rains when I go south :)

by Easingwold on Sep 14, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

They base the price on €, not £?

Daine...I don't think we should talk to either

one of them…such poor fans….Can’t afford it indeed…Wendy hits 150-1 and spends whole months in the South of France? ya know she has to be one rich ol dame….and Easy, always off with the boys playing somewhere….Probably not going to Wales as he might have to take his BW along and afraid he won’t be able to spend much time with the boys drinking….jis sayin….STUB

by thinker on Sep 14, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I've always believed in going to the "biggies"

at least once – just for the atmosphere, but confess I have never attended a RC in person. Sorry Dianemarie, but I need to watch/play EVERY shot and I can only do that from my v. comfortable sofa with the ch on. And it will be raining in Wales. Lots & lots of “precipitation”.

by WendyUK on Sep 14, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I was going to attend but...

Now that Tiger isn’t in it , I’m not going to,,,, no wait wrong tournament….j/k

Misread the article

He will play pro-am this week, but then play two rounds following Friday (to replicate possible RC format) and then tell us the good news.
