El Viaje de PGA Está Preparando Para 'Foray' en Sudamerica
¿Listos para el invasion del PGA Tour in Latina America?
Enough Spanish (or Portuguese for that matter), but it appears the PGA Tour is set to create a fourth tour under its umbrella. This time, it's a Tour geared to helping their interests in South America and to gain the rights to build the venue which will host the 2016 Olympic golf tournament.
Sean Martin reports the Tour is meeting with Latin American golf officials in Miami next weekconcerning the formation of a new feeder tour to the Nationwide Tour.
The problem facing golf in the region is the inconsistency of tournaments and lack of field depth. Both lead to problems for existing tours when trying to present tournaments which offer Official World Golf Ranking points - the lone means of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic tournament.
Many of the details are not quite set, but the Miami meeting will likely establish most of the guiding points behind purse and field size, as well as umbrella sponsorship.
Having a PGA Tour presence in South & Latin America is partially an attempt to make up for lost time and ground in Asia. As the Tour tries to exert influence and establish official events across its umbrella in Asia, the Tour will attempt to conquer golf's next frontier in time for the Rio Olympic games. Prior to the concept of this new feeder Tour, Nationwide Tour president Bill Calfee told Waggle Room late last year that his circuit would be expanding south of the border in '10 and beyond.
"Certainly the Olympics causes us to take a harder look at Latin America," Calfee said last October. "Although, we have been looking at Lating America for a little while now.
"It's an area we think we should look at strategically. We're kind of trying to figure out what our strategic plan is and how we're going to implement it in Latin and South America."
It appears the Tour is now prepared to make its move.

Wouldn't it be a violation of the Monroe Doctrine if the European Tour created a subsidiary in the Americas?

Monroe Doctrine – I like it. Maybe a Bush Doctrine reference?
