Futures Tour Experimenting With Web Streaming of Events

Many fans of women's golf complain about the lack of TV hours dedicated to the LPGA Tour - even with their new Golf Channel arrangement - and the Duramed Futures Tour, which has no national television deal.  Over the years, a number of fans & writers have wondered if women's golf could grow its already devote audience through Web streaming of tournament coverage.

This weekend, the Futures Tour made a foray into Web streaming that may become part of a larger effort.  Armed with a single camera, the Harrisburg, PA, event from the weekend was site to experimental streaming.  Lead groups were shot beginning their round.  Then, the camera was moved greenside at the final hole to show the players putting out.

The video camera was largely stationary, audio was not edited, and there was almost no commentary during the feed.  The Futures Tour explained on their site that they would be trying different video qualities, player sizes, and tweaking other variables for performance.

The experiment was not mentioned on their Website, but was promoted to fans on Facebook and through social media.

Whether or not this experiment expands into a larger effort by the Futures Tour, or is a sandbox in which the LPGA Tour could learn to build a coverage apparatus for their events - particularly those outside of the United States - remains to be seen.

I'm glad to hear about this, Ryan...

I’m one of those guys who’s been begging for this on my blog. I think it’s a great idea, and here’s why:

Did you know that many of the biggest selling books were originally self-published by the author? The “Chicken Soup” books are one example. What happens is that, if the book gets attention and begins selling, large publishers are attracted to the dollar potential.

In other words, the private sales prove there’s a market for the book, so the big boys jump on the bandwagon.

That looks to be the best route for women’s golf right now. Once they can prove there’s an audience through their own efforts (like web feeds), they’ll have a better chance of catching the attention of the networks.

Anything that will showcase

the women on the Duramed, LPGA, LET and any of the others is worth experimenting with….I’m with Ruthless here….anything to show the women, on what ever tour it is, can’t be bad….and besides, they got better looking legs and boobs than the guys…..STUB

Why am I getting a picture of local high school and college computer geeks running around with web cams and cell phones strapped to their heads ? :-)

Sounds like a good place to try an experiment like this.
