Should Tiger Never Have Played in 2010?
These past twelve months have been a year full of firsts for Tiger Woods. First year without a win to this point in the season. Never has he finished a tournament this close to dead last. Woods has never faced as many questions about his golf game. He has never been viewed - as he increasingly is - as a potential liability to the Ryder Cup team.
Perhaps the unthinkable 3 wood pop-up at the 8th hole at Sawgrass is the shot that best defines his year. Unbelievable. Surreal.
Looking clearly defeated, disinterested, and plain dreadful on the course, it's hard not to wonder if Tiger Woods should have completely shelved the 2010 season.
When Tiger Woods made his remarks at TPC Sawgrass on February 19 - the apology that wasn't an apology - he claimed he was unsure of his schedule for 2010.
"I do plan to return to golf one day, I just don't know when that day will be. I don't rule out that it will be this year," Woods said in front of the presidential blue drapery in Ponte Vedra. In just a few short weeks, Woods was convinced that he would return to professional golf at the Masters.
That comeback bid, though falling short to Phil Mickelson, was solid. A fourth place finish at Augusta showed clear signs of rust, but some of precision as well. The year prior, Woods said he almost won the Masters with a "band-aid swing." He exchanged a figurative band-aid for a busted lip from the November car crash, but Woods looked better on course.
The rumors quickly swirled soon after of a pending divorce, an obscene $750 million payout (no way), and continued about break ups with Steve Williams and/or Hank Haney.
Woods next played in Charlotte, on a course he loves, in a tournament that could have been his statement to draw eyes back to his on course performance. Instead, he played two terrible rounds, capped off by a second round back nine 43. The 79 in round two remains his worst round of the year and, arguably, the worst round of his professional career.
A week later, Woods played middle-of-the-pack golf through three rounds of the Players Championship. On the seventh hole of the final round in which he had no chance to contend for even a six figure check, Woods withdrew on partner Jason Bohn. Bohn said he was surprised Woods' move. Woods said his neck hurt, but the cure was the ever vague "rest" and "massage."
Memorial came and went. He was a blip on Justin Rose's victorious radar that week. After Pebble Beach, he would again be a distant haze as Rose won for the second time in 2010.
Speaking of Pebble, though, Woods' third round 66 gave fans, media, marketers, and the sport hope that perhaps he was back. Blinded by a score that really consisted of six good holes - and a full dozen good holes for the tournament - Woods had created a mirage. The final round which left him T4, though much further from the title and his A-game than that indicated, brought the state of his game into clearer view.
Now 0-fer at two of his favorite venues, Woods had one last chance at the British Open. After the easiest day at St. Andrews in Open Championship history, Woods set himself on a track backwards from that encouraging opening round. Despite good driving that improved upon strides made in Philly at Aronimink, Woods putted more like a 20 handicap than the best in the world. No matter the putter he selected, Woods couldn't sink balls from outside of five feet.
And that brings us to Firestone. My God, this was awful. Typically the draw of World Golf Championships events is that there is no cut, but this worked against Woods. He finished next to last by two shots over Henrik Stenson. On Saturday, he hit a dead shank approach to 18. The driver was abysmal all week. At tree-lined Firestone South, that means few greens in regulation. Amid a backdrop that Woods practically owns, he looked pedestrian. If Samson lost his strength from cutting his locks, Woods lost his golf game by flashing a goatee all week.
Despite shunning the media for three rounds - including a priceless "f*** no" reply to answering press questions on Friday - he stopped to speak on Sunday. More astounding, Woods made some admissions that he would never pronounce even on his death bed.
Asked if he was surprised by his showing this week? "No, it doesn't surprise me at all actually."
Perhaps heading off a conversation with Corey Pavin next week at Whistling Straits, he said of his desire to play on the Ryder Cup team, "Not playing like this, definitely not, not playing like this. I mean, I wouldn't help the team if I'm playing like this. No one would help the team if they're shooting 18-over par."
Days prior, Woods said he planned on his playing his way onto the team. Not like this he won't. Without a coach, a trusty putter, or much else, the best recourse for Tiger could be playing next week in Wisconsin and then canning it for the year. Woods himself didn't even rule that out.
Asked if he was tempted to take a break, he was unclear. "I don't know, I'm just going to be ready for Thursday."
Not even wanting to consider that Woods could actually be forced to end his season after The Barclays - a FedExCup playoff event that he previously has had the luxury of skipping - Woods answered a follow up by temporarily regaining his resolve.
"I need to be ready by Thursday."
A good sound bite, no doubt, but does Woods really believe it? Would he just be happier if he could call it a year? Two final questions were lobbed at Woods, and he gave the same answer to both.
"It's been a long year," Woods replied to a follow-up question about his near expectation of failure this week.
It has become a weekly ritual to wonder if and when either Phil Mickelson (throat impediment) or Lee Westwood (calf) would usurp Woods' 5+ year reign atop the Official World Golf Rankings. It would be the third time in his career such a transition would happen. The changing of the guard would not be such a bad thing. For Mickelson or Westwood, it would be their first view atop the OWGR. In Woods' case, it might be good to fold camp from the summit.
Looking more broadly, this season might have been better if he had not played at all. If Woods has simply waited, he might have been able to avoid the kinds of embarrassment and the bad kind of firsts he has experienced this year. Hank Haney might still be his coach. Steve Williams and he might still resemble a team instead of looking like a separated couple waiting for the divorce papers to get through the courts.
Speaking of which, Woods' fix for better golf may well be that he simply is not clearing his body fast enough. But it is more mental than that. Woods needs to get divorced. He needs to settle his life situation. There has to be some quiet element of speculation that Elin may be waiting until the majors are over until the divorce is finalized.
The mental effects of the dissolution looming over his head are clear and become more apparent by the day. Tiger Woods is stubborn and very resolute - two qualities that have helped propel him this far in life. They have also lead him to a crushing divorce and a situation in which he has lost all control of his personal life. It has clearly translated back onto the golf course.
If Woods had focused on saving his family, or ending it in an efficient way, perhaps 2010 could have turned out better. Yes, Woods would have had zero wins, no more majors, and be no closer to Jack. But he would have saved himself several relationships and some compartment in his brain that has piece of mind about something.
Instead, Woods flies to Kohler, Wisconsin, for one final major in 2010, and perhaps no one - not even himself - thinking that it will do him any good.

When this mess all happened, I predicted that he might not play at all this year. Then, he committed to the Masters and the rest is history. Maybe, on some level, that prediction was me just saying he shouldn’t play this year.
Looking back, it’s easy to say he shouldn’t have played with the way things have turned out lately. Clearly, he’s not right mentally. It’s just an assumption (from the various public conjecture), but I’m guessing there’s still turmoil going on behind closed doors that’s weighing on him (i.e. divorce, kids, etc.).
I personally don’t think he’s going to play well until all his personal issues are resolved one way or the other and he starts caring about playing again and he doesn’t just show up and play to regain some sense of normalcy.
I’m not sure how much he’s going to miss Hank Haney (or any formal instruction, for that matter) because he’s not mentally there right now. He needs to get way past everything from this year before it becomes clear how well he’s qualified to be his own coach.
He's been misreading his greens like he misread his
driveway, but he’s still got the Ryder way.
good ol' 20/20 hindsight...
…Won’t be long before xxx Golf Channel then the master of hindsight, Johnny Miller, start chimming in with the same idea.

Well, I don't know about Double, but
OL EASY said from the outset, that EL TIGAR should not play in 2K10 unless all aspects of his personal life were cleaned up and behind him….Now, I don’t know if Easy has a crystal ball or if he was looking through the bottom of his empty pint, but he was dead on…No, I didn’t think so….Tiger was too busy chasing Jacks record to not play in 2K10…That’s why he’s still out there…one more major to go in 2K10…..come hell or high water, Tigar is gonna give it a go….Time’s running out on the guy with all the talent in the world, but a real shitty private life….What comes first….the chicken or the egg…In Tigers life….who knows…..STUB
At the time...
I definitely wasn’t saying he shouldn’t play this year. I just wouldn’t have been surprised if he didn’t.
I figured there’d be some mental effects, but I don’t think I had any feeling it would be this bad.

I thought he might come back for his own tournament in December
the one he couldn’t make last year ( something to do with a hydrant ) ..to have a few of your fellow pros go to yours and you couldn’t be there was embarrassing..it might have been fitting. But Jacks record is there , he wants it, it didn’t work out this year. Unless he wins next week of course. It’s clear his mind isn’t on golf.
I also said I didn't think he would play this year.
I was wrong as ole self centered woods “PUT GOLF” ahead of everything else per usual. His scripted I’m sorry and Indefinite leave of absence was very very short lived and should have been predictable. Silly Me.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
i am a fan of the New York Knicks
Over the last decade, the team has been a laugingstock due in large part to horrible personnel decisions. New management was brought in before the 2008 season and the past two seasons have been sacrificed to clean up the mess of the prior bosses. Now in 2010, there is genuine optimism as the Knicks are (for the most part) free of underperforming players and salary cap stifling contracts.
What does this have to do with golf? Tiger Woods’ 2010 season served the same purpose; clearing the garbage out for better days.
If Tiger Greta Garbos the 2010 season, all the exterior problems he suffered through (personal questions at press conferences, heckling from the patrons, creative airplane banners, etc.) get pushed back to 2011. The earlier he began playing, the earlier he reverts from the tabloid’s favorite golfer to Golf Channel’s favorite golfer.
Is is possible his poor play this season will cause lasting damage? Yes. It is equally possible that the lack of golf in 2010 would not hasten the repair/disolution of his family situation (I’m entertained b the idea that because Tiger plays in tournaments, he can’t finalize his divorce as if he doesn’t have lawyers on his payroll)? In my opinion, yes as well.
Even if Tiger played well as the season went on and won a tournament somewhere, this would be the lost season of his career; a season where he more well known for being a punchline than a golfer.
By playing in 2010, Tiger is getting his public life back in order. We don’t hear about the hecklers as much (I believe they are still out there, but it isn’t as important of a story now that is was in May). The daily bimbo roll call has ended (even Josalyn James has stopped following Tiger from tournament to tournament). Jay Leno has moved on to other targets. Here on Waggle Room, the debates are about his golf.
Will he fix his golf swing and putting by Thursday? I doubt it. Will he be on thr Ryder Cup team? It isn’t looking likely. Does the fact that we are for the most part talking about Tiger’s performance instead of his impending divorce or the cubic ton of women he knew in that way mean he is halfway back? Yes.

yeah yeah yeah – you just want Tiger playing point for the Knicks. :-)

Tiger needs a rest.
I’ve been saying for a long time(years) that Tiger was having issues with his game and outside the ropes.Personally I don’t really like the man. But I repect the talent he once had, and what he did with it. Now he’s just a shadow of what he was, and it started well before the 2008 US Open. Something wasn’t right from my perspective. Lord,….what an understatement. Tiger will never be the player he once was. But he is certainly better than his showing at Bridgestone. He needs to take some time off, and rebuild himself in all areas. Plus,…he needs a swing coach more than anybody I can name. He’s lost. I may not like him, but when he’s playin’ descent, he is good for the game. I hope he finds some help.

Howdy pards. I was in Europe the month of July. Workin on my game, and watchin’ the big boys do their thing. Dude,….it is sooooo cold in Scotland during the summer,…you wouldn’t belive it ! lol Had a blast as always.
you're still away,...choke on it !
Cold in Scotland sounds good right now......
We’ve had temps over 100 with the heat index as high as 120…..its been miserable. Of course I know you have high temps in Arizona, and I’m sure you remember what it’s like here in August. How’s the game coming?? Glad you had fun……
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Sounds pretty good to me ! This heat wave is just killing me….not to mention the greens. (there are quite a few golf COURSES that are closing down until possibly October because of the damage – many more having to replant greens)
Besides – you can always put on more clothes – only so many you can take off. :-)
Sounds like fun, 3’s…you hiring for the next trip ? :-) Welcome back

Closing down courses???? Man that's bad.....
our course is in great shape. We’ve had rain a couple of times that really helped. The grass is growing so fast they can’t keep up with it. I’m playing Los Colinas in Dallas (Byron Nelson site) next weekend and the long range forecast is for HOT, but I’m looking forward to playing the course.

Los Colinas is a cool course. You’ll find out why the Tour guys shoot 20 under on it. Lots of room. I ‘m bettin’ you may break par,……..on a couple of holes at least ! lol Seriously,….you should shoot your index easily. The greens there are sooooo true. Enjoy,….and keep the score-card. Adios amigo.
you're still away,...choke on it !
Thanks.....I'll let you know how....
I do, unless my evil twin (the one who can’t hit driver) shows up……lol.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
What kind of grass do they have on the greens over there ?
Our guest over the weekend had the number of Georgia courses closing down until October at 20. The courses with bent are really suffering around here because of the lack of rain. If we get half an inch in a week, it’s a big week.

I believe the greens at Las Colinas are a heat resistant bent grass strain. Just a guess on my part, but they were similar to those I have played here in Scottsdale area. Las Sendas in Mesa, and my home course in Cave Creek have this grass and it does very well in our heat and limited watering. We get a little wamer than Dallas, but usually do not have the breezes they do, which of course, dries out the greens a bit faster. Anyway, they were terrific surfaces to putt as I remember. Adios.
you're still away,...choke on it !
Glad you enjoyed it 3's
Sorry I couldn’t make it up there to see you, another Open hopefully, Royal Lytham in a few
EZ
The Old Girl in St.Andrews MORE than held her own against a talented field. But DAMN son,…it was windy and cold. Actually, I liked the coolness, but y’all can keep the wind. lol The course was in magnificent shape. Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to play it. Played others and even went across to Ireland for a couple of rounds. Lordy, we had a good time. The local pubs were a blast and they treated us sooooo damn nice. Will be back for next years Open at Royal St.Georges.
you're still away,...choke on it !
Glad you had a great time.
Played Princes and St Georges earlier this year. Nothing much in the town, we stayed in Deal down the road. The course was getting new bunkering in ..and the old clubhouse next door on Princes next to the 14th was destroyed by fire. Did you manage to play Crail when in St Andrews ?
EZ
Didn’t play Crail. So many beers, and so little time,….or something like that. lol
you're still away,...choke on it !
Can't go backwards
It’s easy to see now he probably should have taken the year off, but what’s important now is where to go from here. I hope he puts the clubs away for the rest of the year after the PGA and uses the time to deal with his personal issues and start to heal. Hire a swing coach, (I agree with 3irons there) and regroup for 2011. He still got 4 or 5 competitive years left, (assuming he still wants to play) and plenty of time to finish his career the right way. I still believe he will. Above all else though, I wish him well with this life struggles and hope to see that resolved sooner rather than latter.
Fight for your opinions, but do not believe that they contain the whole truth, or the only truth.

Does nike have a play clause in their endorsement deal with mr. woods?
At this rate of his playing status if he continues this poor play i could see nike terminating his endorsement deal alltogether.
I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. I still will always follow the Mountain West Conference. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez and face the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs Roy Nelson (the winner will be jds)where he will defeat JDS and stake his claim as pound for pound champion. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. 25 days till the first game of college football. UTAH vs Pitt. September 2nd 2010.

It really probably wouldn't have mattered much...
…had he waited, considering the magnitude of what we all know now. While I agree that Tiger may be too caught up in chasing records, I also think he would have played this poorly regardless. While time heals all wounds, he isn’t going to fully heal from this public embarrassment and loss of his morals for years. There was no way he was going to quit the game altogether, so why not play ASAP and deal with everything as it came?
