Sunday Bag: Is This Tiger's Worst Performance Ever?
We're going to start a new segment here for the weekends called the Sunday Bag. (Yes, even if we do it on Saturday.) I'll answer your questions and comments that you send to ryan@thegolfnewsnet.com or through Facebook & Twitter. Just remember, if you send a question, I can print the e-mail.
First is from Sue:
Ryan,
I don't know who you are, but maybe my frustration will get through for you to get through to the Golf Channel. It's not supposed to be the Tiger Woods show, there are so many other players and for a female golfer to have to watch all of the show and see at least 75% of the show being Tiger Woods is just disgusting. Peter Kostis is so in enamored with him and that it is sick. Just wanted to vent my frustration. Enjoy Waggle Room.
With Tiger at +11 through three rounds, it might be time to start re-thinking the Tiger 24/7 strategy. The bottom line is, though, that Tiger drives ratings - even when he is a train wreck. In fact, there's probably an element of the population that is enjoying seeing Tiger struggle. I think with a new number one in the world that Golf Channel and everyone who broadcasts golf will consider showing more players. It's the lack of diversity and ac
Our other question comes from Twitter and @joemadison89:
Is this Tiger's worst showing as a professional? Sometimes it's worse when there's no cut.
That's a great point in the second sentence. When Tiger missed the cut at Quail Hollow, at least he could walk away after shooting 43. At Sawgrass, when he suddenly withdrew with whatever problem he had (he claims a neck issue), he again could just leave and save himself further frustration and potential embarrassment.
So far at Bridgestone, though, he has gutted it out. It'd be too transparent it Woods WD'd, so he has to stick it out. And the results definitely have not improved through three rounds. In that way, it really has the potential to make things worse for Woods. I'm left to wonder how it might boil over on Sunday. As our Futures Tour correspondent Steph Connelly has said, you just gotta play through slumps. Right now, though, Tiger doesn't know if that'll yield some kind of 65 tomorrow to avoid finishing a shocking DFL, or an 80 to cement it.
Arguably, it has to be the worst performance of his career based upon prior track record here (7 wins, no worse than 5th). A case could also be made for last year's Open Championship, but this seems much worse. Charlotte this year is a contender, too. 43 on a side is pretty terrible.
Remember, send your questions in via e-mail or Facebook & Twitter, and I'll answer them each weekend.

Tiger is a Train wreck......
And just like a real train wreck, there are many casualties. Tigers marriage, Tigers family, Tigers integrity, Tigers reputation, Tigers believability, Tigers endorsement contracts, Tigers legions of fans, Tigers golf game, Tigers putting, Tigers number 1 ranking, and the game of golf…….a Train wreck of epic proportion……and all self-inflicted. Kinda sad.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Now listen up here TH, F&G, Two nuse, and Court...
What I’m gonna say is is I have never been a Tigar Hater….now,, If ya says I said that, I will deny it to my dying breath….What I can’t abide, is someone with all the talent in the world treating it like his due….My friend and hero, Ben Hogan knew better…that’s why he always said ya gotta dig it outta the dirt….Believe me, no one worked harder than Mr. Hogan…What I want to see , is the best GOLF we can from those who have all this ability and opportunity….STUB
Tiger may be many things...
but I don’t think lazy is one of them.
His golf is substandard right now, but it isn’t because he is taking his talent for granted. I’d guess it is because his mind is screwed up due to the situation he put himself in.

I have to take exception to your implication that Tiger lacks work ethic. Actually I would put it like this, you’re dead wrong!! Few have worked harder at in the game today, and Tiger is the one who put the word “athlete” in professional golf. Yes, perhaps he’s not working that hard at it this year, but in case you haven’t noticed he’s got a few issues going on MUCH MORE important than his golf game. Tiger has been a FIERCE competitor his entire career and golf simply isn’t at the top of his list right now, and it shouldn’t be. Can you name any player, past or present, that never had a bad year? Can you name any player who’s never struggled? If Tiger never wins again he’ll go down as the second or third best player in history; you don’t do that without working VERY hard.
Fight for your opinions, but do not believe that they contain the whole truth, or the only truth.

Tiger put the word “athlete” in professional golf ? I’ll agree with you that he took it to another level – but you’re leaving out Gary Player, who had to get in amazing physical shape to compete with Nicklaus and Palmer. You also have Greg Norman, who is a physical specimin, and Nick Faldo, who was training to be an Olympic cycleist. Woods added to the physical training, but he’s not the starting point.

My point is
Tiger has worked very hard, as did the other players you mentioned. Stub seems to think Tiger just rolled out of bed to win 71 times and 14 majors.

Hard to say....
…usually with a performance like he had on Thursday and Friday, he would just be slamming the trunk and heading to the airport. A lot of people are making a big deal over his three round total being his most over par, but he has never been in a situation when he was playing this badly, but still had to play the weekend..
Worst performance ? Nope – I’d still have to say missing the cut at The British a year ago was worse – but this could very well be his most humiliating because he has to be there all four days.
Unless he wins The PGA, I don’t see how Pavin can pick him for the Ryder Cup team – and I doubt Woods wants to be on the team the way he’s playing.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
If he throws a top 5 in there, he may make it on points
Even if it doesn’t, I can’t see Pavin leaving him off the team and I can’t see Tiger begging off.
And as for anyone who can’t see Tiger playing well next week, Appelby is +6 this week.
Just as Appleby can be Mr. 59 one day and close to the bottom of the field the next...
Tiger could stink up the place this week and play well next week. I wouldn’t bet on that, but the fact his golf stinks right now doesn’t mean it has to stink at the PGA.
True enough – he has two top 5’s in majors this year and basically nothing else – it’s possible…but I’m not going to hold my breath.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
If Tiger was a nice guy like Adam Scott,
Pavin might do a Norman for him…it got Scott back with a boost of confidence. But Tiger isn’t one of the lads, is he ?
Is it called a Norman or a Player...
for Trevor Immelman?
Tiger doesn’t need to be one of the lads. He will have NBC and the PGA of America pushing Pavin instead.
I'd like to think Pavin wouldn't give in to that.
In any case, the cup is in Europe this year, NBC will probably cut it off early for some prime time show.
Two...I beg to differ
with you….Tiger very much has to be one of the lads….and Pavin doesn’t have to give him a pick either….Pavin marches to a different drummer….I can see him saying to NBC and the PGA and USGA and the Tour itself….go screw yourselfs….this is my team….I play who I want…..And remember…Tigers record isn’t that stirling in the cup….And who do you think wants to buddy buddy with him right now….jist sayin mind ya…..STUB
Does it really matter
if this is Tiger’s worst performance? Is Tiger the first top player to ever struggle? Have we now come to expect perfection from him? Only one player in history has a better record; I repeat, ONE. So enough of this relishing in his struggles, you’ve all had plenty of time to get in your digs and laugh it up; it’s time to move on.

Golf Channel's special, "How Tiger Beat Stenson by Two Strokes at Bridgestone,"
to be aired 13 times prior to PGA tourney.
What...
another top player struggled with his golf game? That just can’t be, only Tiger has struggles, right?

The higher they climb
the harder the fall. Chill out about it Tigerhead…Tiger won’t be missed if he quits now…that’s an American paranoia…the rest of the world couldn’t care less.
Fans have moved on court
The people who want to use him to promote their tournaments are a different matter. You know, they will squeeze all they can out of him while they can. They don’t represent Australia, they want to make money.
I just got home from Church......
and I see Tiger shot 77, going 5 over on the last few holes…..did he quit and just didn’t try or what???
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Well, during his post-round interview when asked if he thinks he'll be a captain's pick
for the Ryder Cup, Tiger replied, “I’m planning on playing my way into oblivion,” so I think his mindset’s a tad off.
I just saw the replay of the interview.....
I almost felt sorry for him…..almost. Never thought he would fall this far……I hoped he would, but never really thought it could happen. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom………
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Yeah, I was so upset, that I let
my evil twin show up today at the course…..I played so bad, that even Tiger and Phil could have beaten me……
