The Deutsche Bank Championship and Hurricane Earl

Well, here it comes, targeting the East Coast of New England - especially the Cape Cod area and just 35 miles southeast of Norton, Ma. Norton is where TPC Boston lives - the home of this week's tournament.

Right now, all the radar trackers have the hurricane either making a direct hit or brushing the coast line of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine before then pushing forward to Nova Scotia, Canada.

Hurricaneearl_medium

It's bad news for the Deutsche Bank Championship, as landfall for Earl is on schedule to happen early Friday and drop some 5-7 inches of rain and who-knows-what-type of wind damage, with predictions now ranging from 55-130 MPH winds.

I'm heading up there later today as I have a summer home that sits right at sea level, a mere 165 feet from the Atlantic during high tide cycle. I need to tighten things up a bit prior to Friday.  In 1991, the Perfect Storm left me with four feet of water in my living room from the storm surge.

Let's all hope that the weathermen are wrong as usual, but at the moment it's not looking too promising.

Jumpn.......I have a lot of experience

with hurricanes and I can tell you that although the forecasting has improved over the years, these big storms can and will do whatever they want…..you never know where they will end up. Hopefully you and your house will be safe. If it does hit up there, stay away from the water…….storm surge is what kills most people…….

55 – 130 mph ? Why not just throw the entire range of hurricane force winds into that “prediction”.

Earl isn’t even past Cuba yet – how the heck is it going to get to Boston in 2 days ? That’s just dumb. Where are you getting this stuff ?

According to NOAA, the POSSIBILITY of MA getting hurricane force winds is 5% – and that may not happen until Sunday. Landfall is predicted for the Outter Banks along North Carolina – if at all. Right now, the predictions for tripical storm winds are only 40% by Sunday.

They may get some breeze and they may get some rain – but it won’t be what you’re talking about.

Court........Right and Hurricanes have always been

very temperamental (maybe that’s why they were always name after women) and are hard to predict. We (as you know) have had our share of storms the last ten years and I don’t think a single one did as they predicted……even in the final hours prior to Katrina they still weren’t sure exactly where landfall would take place.

Radar Trackers Court

All computer models have it heading into the East Coast of New England.

The “Perfect Storm” in 1991 was not predicted either and the 4 ft of water in my living room was not just some imaginary puddle of water.

This from NOAA. Hurricane Earl: East Coast threat.
August 31, 2010 10:50 am ET Earl is now a category 4 major hurricane. It’s moving fast, and could impact the East Coast Thursday and Friday.

East Coast – take a look at the pictures – North Carolina – also part of the east coast (not just New York and Boston).

Wasn’t the Perfect Storm a collision of three storm fronts ? Right now, this is the only one heading that direction and it’s still short of Cuba. It’s not going to be in Boston as a hurricane by Friday. They don’t move that fast.

that’s at least 12 “projected” tracks – the worst of them might barely brush the coast of North Carolina. A few of them are following the same path as Charlie, that went all the way over to the UK and made a mess of a few areas in 2004.

No – I’m saying that RB’s interpretation of what is being said is wrong. Earl will not be a hurricane making landfall in New England on Friday. The prediction for landfall right now is along the Outter Banks of NC in the next couple of days, then moving up the coast. RB’s prediction of 5-7" of rain on Friday are a WAG at best. Earl is down in the Bahamas right now – it is not going to move inland and then up and make it to New England in 3 days.

My WAG ? It some of the outter bands might start blowing up there by the weekend, but it’s not going to be a hurricane. Since Katrina, the weather bureaus have been erring on the side of the Apocolypse in their storm preditctions. Back in the spring, the weather people down here were predicting upwards of 20 hurricanes…I’m shocked that they didn’t predict that the entire southeast US would be swallowed up and sucked out to sea.

FWIW, every forecast I have seen up here in Boston predicts oppressive heat through Thursday, a washout Friday as Earl goes by to the East and then a beautiful Labor Day weekend with sun and mid to high 70s Sat-Mon.

The Earl talk from the weather folks up here is essentially all like this from Boston.com

“As the state continued to sweat through a five-day heat wave today, forecasters keeping a close eye on Hurricane Earl said there was a small possibility the cyclone could move west and make landfall on Massachusetts shores later this week.”

Dontcha love the “cone of possibiity” that the Weather Channel people came up with ? Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. and Rye Beach NH ) for most of my life and I’m some what of an Old Salt and know a little about coastal storms. BTW, The Perfect Storm was indeed 3 storms of which none of them were Hurricanes, but caused major damage along the NE coastline including the 4 ft of water in my first floor. This past winter in NH the small winter storm with 50-60 MPH winds caused major damage along the coast including some to my summer place, so yeah I do pay attention. {;o)

Like I said Court I get my info from NOAA and TWC and a few other places.

Funny you should ask about my brothers boat, as I just got off of the phone with him and he says he and 6 other guys are taking their boats inland to a small town called, Weeks Mills, ( where men are men and the sheep are nervous) in Maine. I think its about 50 miles or so inland and it’s where they store them for a couple of months in the winter.

Thursday I have a crew coming to mine and a few neighbors houses to do some boarding up and sand bagging. Things are not looking to good for the tournament on Sat or Sunday in Norton. The course will be soaked and who knows about wind damage and downed trees at this point.

Weather “Underground” eh ? Hmmm – a secret weather predicting society….veeeeerrryy interesting. :-)

I like the red line that goes across Nova Scotia, then ricochetes off of a road sign in northern Canada and goes over to Greenland

So what we learn is that NOAA, TWC, and WU are all looking at the same information and coming up with dozens of completely different “predictions”.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Sep 1, 2010 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Somehow I knew you would say that. :-)

WU is only reporting the main models that are used. Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, it was founded in 1995 as an offshoot of the University of Michigan’s Internet weather database and is run by Dr. Jeff Masters. It is one of the best weather websites on the Internet, and gives a whole picture instead of a condensed forecast.

As for the models, it seems you don’t know who produces them:

UKMET is produced by the (surprise) the United Kingdom’s national weather service.

The Global Forecast System (GFS) is a global numerical weather prediction computer model run by NOAA on supercomputers.

NOGAPS is produced by the US Naval Observatory.

and so forth and so on.

With each storm, data are fed into the respective modeling systems and a product produced based on historical records, physics and so forth and so on. Then that storm too becomes part of future models.

This isn’t like the old days of Charlie Stump on channel 9 in Orlando looking at a weather map and giving it his best estimation of what would happen next.
and so forth and so on.

by Charles Boyer on Sep 1, 2010 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Cool – interesting stuff. I had never heard of WU.

I always wonder why hurricane predictions are done, in the US, in places that never get hurricanes. The National (gubmint) Weather people are calling the shots from Colorado, of all places. Now Michigan.

I hear they do that from time to time court, also

In the very early days of TWC when they only had one or two overhyped reporters to send out to a probable Hurricane landing location, they got caught using large commercial fans on the scene because the storm had moved in a different direction thus having nothing to report. Today they have 8-10 reporters spread all up and down the east coast from North Narolina to Maine to make sure they get it correct. LOL

TGC and TWC run a close first and second with their oversensationalism of reporting.

They STILL get caught doing things like that. They’ll walk out into the water then report that the storm surge is coming in. Last year, they were talking about how bad things were, leaning with the wind and all that stuff, but there were people in the back of the shot taking nice strolls on a pier.

The best one was 2 years ago when they had reporters live somewhere reporting on the flooding. Suddenly a young couple walks casually by behind them and the water was not even up to their knees. I fell off the couch laughing so hard. I believe that video is still on you tube somewhere.

I see your guys got a commitment from Stephen Rivers — Philip’s little brother. If he’s as good as his older bro, you are looking at a Heisman Trophy down in Death Valley.

Yeah, he looks like the real deal....

Les Miles is great at coming through with those top 5 recruiting classes, but his game day coaching is somewhat suspect. That’s where Saban beats him. Both are great recruiters.

Just pulled up NOAA

their “predcition” now has Earl creeping along from 8am Wednesday to 8am Thursday going from a line abut the Georgia / Florida border to the Outter Banks of North Carolina – THEN – he somehow changes gears and goes more than twice as far in the next 24 hours. Must be that good North Carolina barbecue.

It’s actually going to meet up with a dip in the jet stream that is supposed to accompany the cold front currently in the midwest.

Anyway, for a GREAT discussion on what could happen, read this entry by Dr. Masters. It’s plain English and very informative.

That’s interesting. I can’t find a jet stream map that puts the air flow anywhere near the east coast through the 10th.

cool article – even into the comments. his prediction was for Earl to get in the area of the tournament after 8pm Friday night and roll through for the next 6-12 hours with winds in the 40 mph range. If he’s right, maybe they’ll only have to put up with a wet golf course over the weekend.

It has just been reported that Earl has turned more Northerly

and will be affecting New England worse than previously predicted.

Thanks EM, you are correct. THIS JUST IN ::: from the National Weather Center

Hurricane Earl will slam North Carolina’s Outer Banks tonight. Earl’s next stop is Long Island and Cape Cod. Millions of people will be affected by this massive storm.

Just heard that on our news too

Maybe there’s a chance it will turn east – do hope so – stay safe as you can.

That’s one big stom. The eye is still down along a line with the soutnern tip of South Carolina and the top of the organized bands is up almost to Viriginia. Just hope the eye stays out to sea.

It's cloudy and breezy here

We’re on the fringes of any bands, but the sun hasn’t been out 20 minutes all day and the clouds are all in parallel lines across the sky. We’re getting somewhat unusual puffy breezes too, but nothing that would even affect a golf shot too much.

And we’re 125 miles inland and the storm is some 400 miles away.

Off Topic...

I didn’t want to start a whole new thread for this, so I thought this thread looked the closest… I’m trying to watch Live@ on www.pgatour.com. I get the screen, I can hear the preview (advertisement) but then I get “video unavailable”. Can anyone else watch the live coverage online? I have tried to check and update my Adobe flashplayer and nothing seems to work…I can watch other videos from www.pgatour.com.

I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.

Em,

Can you try watching Live@ on www.pgatour.com? I’m having no luck!

I gave up on Yahoo – I missed 2 weeks in a row awhile back and just never got back into it – I am doing www.kerplookee.com fantasy golf instead. Really enjoying it.

I don't know why you can't..

Have you got the right media player downloaded ? Or maybe your firewall is blocking it. Someone here must know…I’m just a 52 year old fossil on these things, lol

Red..... It came right up on my computer.....

I use firefox and they are right now talking about thunder and rain in the area. Sorry I didn’t get this, I just got back home. I quit kerplookee a long time ago, but am doing well in Yahoo, 6th overall and a great start today…..They just announced play has been suspended.

I just looked...

at the leaderboard and noticed that play had been suspended…bummer! Here’s the thing about Fantasy golf that drives me crazy – I pick, second guess, research, and every single week I have at least 2 guys on my short list that I drop off that end up doing great!!

Last week I thought FINALLY! I had Kuch and Stricker, waived in Laird, but still wasn’t even close to winning. I think I would just be better off just rooting for my faves every week. :-) (Liking Stricker’s -5 through 17 today!) Although this course seems ripe for birdies…LOTS of low scores so far. Hope this weather passes soon.

I like the basic format of the Yahoo fantasy, but I get so

aggravated that their program isn’t better. I’ve had 3 or 4 guys wd or not play for whatever reason, the program should automatically put the bench play in. And when there are weather delays, you have about a 2 minute window to make changes for the next round, so I’ve had guys MC and not be able to put in my bench player. One week, these two things cost me 30 points…..I was torked!
