The Manchurian Captain: Did Monty Help the US With His Picks?
Waiting with bated breath, so many of on both sides of the Atlantic awaited Colin Montgomerie's announcement of his three captain's picks for the Ryder Cup team. The announcement was originally set for 1pm ET, then minutes before the show was to go live, it was pushed back a half hour.
The pushing back gave the tip of the hand to one of Monty's picks. Luke Donald, with a 5-1-1 career Ryder Cup record, had just gone out in 28 in the final round of The Barclays. The wait was almost assuredly for Monty to change his mind. Montgomerie later acknowledged calling Justin Rose to inform him of the bad news just prior to his 1:30pm tee time.
With more courteous timing aimed at a 1:00pm announcement, Rose could have had more time to process the snub. Instead, he shot 72 after Monty delivered the bad news in private and then told the world that Edoardo Molinari and Paddy Harrington would join Donald as his wild card selections.
The initial reaction in such things - namely this & the NCAA basketball selection show (teaser: a post coming on this idea later) - is almost always, "How could you leave XYZ out?"
World number nine Paul Casey was left off the team in probably the second biggest snub compared to Rose, a two-time winner this summer. But what about Bernhard Langer, who picked up his fifth Champions Tour win this season? If there is a hotter golfer on the planet right now, please stand up.
In a skeptic's mind - like mine - Casey and Rose were omitted from the team because both opted to play the overwhelming portion of their year on the PGA Tour and, in crunch time for Monty's selection process, crossed the captain's wishes and took their talents to New Jersey for the first leg of the FedExCup playoffs. End game for each of them, yes?
But then how does one explain Harrington's pick? For all intents and purposes, he plays the US tour full time now. He played three times in Europe proper in 2010. Was that the magic number? Of course not. Prior to winning three majors and becoming the most prolific European major winner of his era (yes, really), Harrington was an incredible loyalist to the fledgling European Tour. Fortunately for Harrington, that loyalty was present when Montgomerie was pegged for the annual Order of Merit title and the now captain was unable to translate his winning ways across the Pond. Since then, Harrington has done a loyalty about face - including making a public stink with vice-captain Thomas Bjorn about a rule players were seeking to push through to increase minimum European Tour participation thresholds.
Monty must have remained loyal, knowing he needed at least one more guy who was not a rodeo rookie. For whatever reason, Bernhard Langer was not that on the radar despite unequivocally playing better golf in the last twelve months. Hell, the last 20 months. A Langer nod would have been folly in the UK press and rung of favoritism much louder than St. Patrick's bells. It's hard to fathom ridiculing the pick when Langer was quietly winning for the fifth time this season in Washington, but that likely would have been the reaction.
Honestly, though, why was Harrington not named the vice captain that Sergio Garcia was? If it was experience and camaraderie - and not his 0-8-2 record in the last ten Ryder Cup matches - that carried him onto the squad, couldn't Paddy have been just as valuable as a mascot? Old man Langer could have been accommodated with a shorter setup, Monty's primary advantage as home coach.
As for the other two picks, it seems clear Monty's picks were greatly influenced - if not made - by Sunday afternoon play. A year's worth of golf to pick a squad via a frankly outmoded European system and Monty goes with a match of cards from yesterday afternoon? Wow.
Edoardo Molinari has earned his place on the team. He earned it when Francesco made the team, assuring Monty of at least one duo who had played together with success. The World Cup champions coincidentally won in China in a stroke play format, but no matter to Monty, who surely was dying to identify his own lethal team. Molinari shielded Monty from undue criticism of the pick with birdies in triplicate to win the Johnnie Walker Championship. Monty said in June that he hoped all of the contending players would join him at Gleneagles to vie for their spots. Molinari was on the fringe with his points, handicapped by being a Challenge Tour player for much of the process. If whoever had won Gleneagles was even close on points, they were on the team.
Though Harrington may be the more curious pick, Luke Donald flat makes no sense. If it were the two Rose MCs in the final two majors that did him in despite a multi-win (though the wins were shaky and he choked away another entirely) season, then how did Luke Donald look better? Donald was MC Hammer at Whistling Straits. He missed four cuts on Tour in 2010, including the Masters. Sans the Open Championship T11 back door style, Donald has nothing to show for in the majors this year. Could Monty have always wanted to pick him and Donald's 28 given him the ammo to pick the Englishman? Probably. That back nine 40, though, reminded everyone of why Donald really made no sense.
And as the Wild Hair Thought, did Monty pick Donald and Harrington to throw off the bettors who were certain they had the inside info? It can't be put past the guy.
In the end, Monty has a shroud of doubt over the three captain's picks that he says traditionally account for 70% of their eligible points. Can you imagine any of those three players doing just that? Maybe Molinari when he and his brother transform into - in Kobe Bryant's soon-to-be immortal words - Voltron. The other two picks were made using ineffective rubrics.
As a Yank, it's hard to not be excited about what Monty unleashed. Ian Poulter's none too pleased with the picks, and he typically represents the attitudes of the up-and-coming generation. Other players on the team might be unhappy with the route Monty took. And, with a connection to Poulter, perhaps this picture of Justin Rose (and Camilo Villegas) might best represent potential dissent in European ranks about how captain Monty tried to outfox his selection system to create an imposing opposition for the invading Americans.

Pavin can base his picks on matchups now
That’s the way I see it as helping the US side: Pavin can base who he picks on how a player’s games might match up with the now-known European team and pick guys that he thinks can beat the guys they are going to play.
I have to admit...
I wouldn’t have thought of Langer as a potential pick, but you make a good argument. Luke Donald’s match play record is pretty decent, so I can see him being a pick, but I agree with the Harrington discussion – I think I would have picked Paul Casey.
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
I’m with Jeff – the Harrington pick is a bit of a mystery – but I don’t think the Casey pick is as big a deal as a lot of people are making it out to be. I don’t think it’s going to matter much – the European team is going to win this year. Monty added some flags to the team instead of having 2/3’s or even 3/4’s flying English colors. Luke Donald made the effort that Casey didn’t make by playing in Europe for three or four weeks and getting a win.
The US Team is going to be interesting – but it’s going to be an inexperienced team, Tiger’s not very reliable right now, Anthony Kim is hurt, Phil is Phil, Stricker isn’t very long, Furyk isn’t very long – and this is a big, windy golf course they’re heading to.

Agreed the Euros will be heavily favored...but....
Seems like in the past, the US side would be heavily favored on paper and would then lose, and last time around if I am not mistaken, the Euros were supposed to have a Kentucky Waltz and take the Ryder Cup back home. Didn’t happen.
I think this event is one where that sports cliche of “you can throw the record books out of the window when these rivals meet” applies 100%.

different attitude
Don’t forget that the European Teams generally go out with the attitude that they have something to prove and the Americans just go out more or less expecting to win.
You could very well be right about throwing out the record books this year, depending on the US team makeup. If Pavin picks guys who are going to go in fired up “ready for war”, this could be an all time Cup.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Yep, this time our boys might go into it with the mentality of having something to prove.
That’s one reason why I favor picking Tonto (Tiger) because he of all people will go at it with a chip on his shoulder and the desire to stomp a mudhole in to Euro rear end. That and his game is coming together again. I think he wins one of the next three events. A FedEx Cup win is not out of the question for him.

I'm so glad Court is picking Europe...
That means the USA has a chance!! hee hee :-)
I think this will be one great match in a month!

Langer?
Sorry, but the Seniors Tour is a long way from reality. Way shorter courses, and opposition, whilst entertaining, hardly stack up to either the Euro or PGA Tours. Besides, it will be too wet in Wales in October to get carts on the course.
Match play seemingly always comes down to short-game and putting, and even though Langer is one of the best there is on the Senior circuit, you have to wonder how his putting would hold up in the intense pressure-cooker of a Ryder Cup.
I understand your point about shorter courses, etc., but guys like Tim Clark, who are shorter than even a Langer or Couples can do very well in international competition and also win full field events like the Player’s. It would be a disadvantage to a Langer to face Dustin Johnson, but at the same time the light-hitting guys still can compete.

10:33am - Jeff Shackleford coming up on XM/Sirius/PGATour.com
Good discussion going on this morning and Jeff Shackleford is coming right up if you want to listen in. Replay around 3:30 eastern this afternoon.
Should be good stuff from Shack…I was a big fan until he banned me from the site for pointing out that he was wrong on something.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I would have taken Langer over Harrington anyday.
I’m a big fan of Paddy Harrington, but his play this year has been anything but good.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
That’s a big statement – taking a senior player, no matter how well he’s playing, over the much younger, longer player on this course. (besides – Langer’s playing almost exclusively on the US Champions Tour – so he’s out)
Accepting Monty not wanting to pick guys who play on the US PGA Tour – who would you have picked since Casey was not in contention ?
Who’s the really big hitting Spaniard who had a really solid first part of the year ? Alvero Quiros ? Let him go head to head with Dustin Johnson on Sunday.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I see you’re wearing the red nose, big floppy shoes, and water squirting daisy this morning.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
yep, I borrowed it from Jim Furyk on Thursday.
Ok I lied,,,,,I lost a bet with Jim on Friday while we were putting on his Southwest Green. Now I have to wear the damn thing all week, including at the Deutche Bank tournament. O’h the Horror !!!
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
lol – that was to TXQ – not you. You’ll have to stop by the XM tent at 18 this week and introduce yourself to Brian Katrek.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
lol – he’d have to think for a second, but he’d know who you’re talking about.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I will refuse his questions about TW
Because it’s “None of My Business” lmao
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
ok – I’ll take your word on that – but he might enjoy the boxing talk. we had Diamond Dallas Page in a few weeks ago. You could introduce him to a REAL sport. :-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I'll tell ya this, guys. I always watch streetfights.
If you wait till they’re over you can usually find some loose change on the ground.
Actually
I just noticed that the Renaissance Boston Patriot Place Hotel charges $11.00 a day for internet and has no wifi. What a friggin rip off. Not that I care about the $11.00 add on, but they do have some nerve charging that.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
LMAO
Joseph Falkinburg ?a/k/a, Diamond Dallas Page, wholly crap, is he still wrestling,? heck he’s a couple of years older than me I think and I stepped out of the ring 25 years ago. Then again, wrestling isn’t that dangerous. lolol I think he was in the movie Driftwood if thats the same guy. Sounds like Katrek needs some up-to-date guests. lolol
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
Nah – he’s not rasslin’ any more. He’s doing fitness guru stuff, and public speaking. He’s a pretty funny guy – lots of hilarious stories. His YRG fitness training is pretty cool. Very low impact. He started working on it when he tore up his back.
Check out the Arthur video on his web page – DiamondDallasPage.com. The guy was a paratrooper and tore up his knees during his military career. Very inspiring video.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I'm not kicking Richard Simmons to the Curb just yet.
Talk about low impact. lol j/k
Heck my Mom was a big Jack Lalanne fan. I think my Dad was jealous.
My g/f has one of his juicers, but I use it for cocktail mixers, boy does that piss her off. haha
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
lol – that LaLaine juicer was one of the best ! Not all plastic like the ones today.
Remember this one ?

"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I figured you for a juicer, Court.
How else could you be so prolific a commenter.
I think Monty is pretty tight with Donald and has clearly shown preference – just like the European RC qualifying does – to those that play more tourneys on the Euro Tour. Not the best way to put an ‘international field’ together these days.
Casey was rightfully left off the list. I don’t want to hear about his World Ranking, we all know that that formula is effed up.
What’s funny is that Rose would’ve more than qualified for the U.S. team. Perhaps he should switch teams? Wouldn’t that be the ultimate slap in the face?
Semper Ubi Sub Ubi
Here’s an immigration question – not about Rose – potentially the PGA Tour’s player of the year – but about Casey. He is married to an American citizen. Doesn’t that make him a US Citizen ? Or does he still have to wait the 5 years and then take the test ? I thought thing speeded up if you marred a citizen. Not sure he’d be eligible to play on the US team since he wasn’t born here in any case. (similar to Annika Sorenstam)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Well, he lives here for one. Lower taxes for another. His wife is an American.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
He can have dual citizenship – we were joking about getting Casey on the US Ryder Cup team.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
The joke was about getting Rose on the US team, wasn't it?
What Casey can get – and what he wants – may be two different things. My husband has lived longer in the UK than in France, is married to an English Rose (he wished!) and pays lower taxes than he would in France. So?
He would have absolutely no problem in acquiring British citizenship, but he’s French to his very core.
Rose is still in the running – and he’s not married to an American – kind of hard to fit him into the joke.
Rose is first in if Westwood can’t go.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I beg to differ
mdbrigham made the joke that Rose would have qualified for US team & could switch. You’re the only one who has raised the subject of Casey changing nationality. I know the Euro team qualification rules, thanks all the same.
Donald's 1,2,3 in Europe
swayed the decision in his favour undoubtedly – Casey, Rose & Harrington could have played those same tournaments. I would have chosen Casey over Harrington based on RC results/current form, etc, but perhaps Paul McGinley’s comment prior to the announcement of the picks was telling. When asked about Harrington’s chances, he replied “There’s form – and then there’s class”.
Ian Poulter is letting his friendship with Rose cloud his judgement IMO.
PS Why on earth would Monty care about the betting – has no impact whatsoever on anything?
I don’t get it – why is Casey so disliked over there ? Can’t just be a grudge over him coming here for college, a wife, and playing mostly on the PGA Tour, can it ? The only statement I’ve ever heard him make that was negative was about the US a few years ago.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Where did you get this dislike for Casey from?
I’ve never heard a negative comment about Casey or Donald for that matter, regarding their attendance at US colleges, marriage to beautiful American girls and playing mostly on the PGA Tour. You’re just looking for trouble where there isn’t any. Actually, OEG was a bit miffed about UK players taking golf scholarships from US hopefuls.
Casey’s comments were like a battle-cry before RC, but they were tactless and he did apologise. At least he’s paying US taxes!
Well, there’s McGinley’s comment for starters – you put it in your own post. That comment was directed at Casey in the discussion of Harrington over Casey. "There’s form – and then there’s class". There were rumors from the last RC that Casey wasn’t well accepted in the locker room….nothing substantiated – that’s why I was asking you.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
McGinley's comment was made in defence of Harrington's reputation
and was prior to the picks being announced, so I didn’t take it in any way as directed at Casey. I have honestly heard nothing negative about Casey vis-a-vis RC team.
that’s not a defense – that’s an excuse. he took the guy who has the “class” over the guy who is in “form”.
but I’m glad the negative rumors I’ve heard were probably false.
