Brett Favre to Retire, Bridgestone Invitational Cancelled

Rumors are rampant that Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre is texting friends and teammates that "this is it" - Favre will retire and finally stay down instead of an annual reprisal of his role in an off-Broadway production of Season of the Living Dead.

So, we may as well forget golf this week because - surely - all of the talk will be about Favre.  Tiger Woods probably will text Favre to thank him for the distraction this week.

Meanwhile, we still have some golf news and questions to consider today:

  • Are PGA Tour players wimps?
  • What do we make of Yani Tseng's short career?
  • AND talk about Camilo VIllegas' move to TMAG

I spent a weekend up in north Georgia a while back at a place that had two regulation croquet pitches. There was a tournament going on that weekend. I always thought of croquet as this genteele game with the whites and “jolly good shot” all over the place. Let me tell you – these people were viscious ! They would go out of their way to put their oppoent in an impossible position instead of advancing their ball to the next position. And the women were the MOST viscious !

There was an update on the cancellation of the Bridgestone and Turning Stone – that decision has been turned into a last minute decision. Since it is only Tuesday, there is a good chance that Faaaa-vvvvruh could re-un-retire and re-re-retire several times between now and Thursday morning.

As for Yani Tseng’s career to date…“you can make a hat, or you can make a broach, or you can make a pteridactyl…” :-)

The girl has 3 majors and one regular tournament. I’m halfway to thinking that the LPGA should stop calling majors by that title and just switch everything around. Call the rest of the schedule “majors” (since every week, you can find someone in the field who says that week is like a 5th major) and the majors the “regular season”, since it seems that these major winners have a harder time winning the rest of the year than they do in the “majors”.

A major is a major.

It’s set up tougher, the ultimate test for the golfers concerned. The fact she has won more than Ochoa is amazing in itself. To belittle her achievement because she has won 1 tour event is ridiculous. And she is only 21.

If you asked the best active player in the game today, you won’t get an agreement on that point, CnP. Tiger Woods goes out to win every time he tees it up. He isn’t JUST about the majors. 70 PGA Tour wins plus I don’t know how many international wins.

Then move on to NIcklaus and Sorenstam. Both wanted the wins – no matter where they came.

Accually his goal was to pass Bobby Jones "13"majors.

When he did, he suddenly thought what next ? He almost felt like retiring after he won His Memorial in ’77. But he then won 4 more majors. In his books, he said he always tried peak for the majors.

Zucchini, runner beans, new potatoes – alll being picked, but tomatoes nowhere near ripe yet. Like the farmers markets over here too, but they’re v. pricey considering the lack of overheads.
Best thing about them? There’s always a stall where they roast a whole pig, and you get a chunk of crusty bread, loads of pork with crispy crackling, apple sauce & sage & onion stuffing on the side. I get hiccups from eating it too quickly. Nice half of bitter to wash it down.

G'day Shirl!

Yani is 21 and has won three majors. That’s way quicker than anyone else. Why are we not giving her the credos she deserves? Annika was 25 before she won her first, Tiger 22 when he won his first. What am I missing here?

by chip n'putt on Aug 3, 2010 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

Kudos – a credo is a belief system or a philosophy you live by.

Tseng didn’t win her third “way quicker than anyone else” – she is the youngest, but just by a little bit. Not sure who you’re saying is taking shots at her.

Tiger went to college and was 21 when he won his first. He turned pro at 20. Tseng didn’t go the college route, so she’s been playing professional golf longer than Woods at the same age.

You also have to have more game to play against the men – the men’s pros are just deeper and have more shots and ability.

Deep breath……….. Bull shit!! Sorry, but that is rubbish. Stronger, yes, that’s a given. More shots because they are stronger – maybe. Better???? It’s too late for me anyway, to be winding me up like that.

by chip n'putt on Aug 3, 2010 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

strength has some to do with it – watch the women when they get in trouble and it’s almost always a pitch back to the fairway. you watch the men in the woods or in trouble, they are looking for a way to hit the green.

Annika Sorenstam said it herself, after playing The Colonial, that her short game was nowhere near as good as the men – and she was the best player in the women’s game. The men have more variety and skill in the short game – and the best women will admit it.

by chip n'putt on Aug 3, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Aug 3, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

OK. Bad choice of words. Less options or choices. You play to what is set up for you. The men play more diverse conditions than the girls around the greens. It’s just the way they set up courses for events. The men have more shots because they need them.

by chip n'putt on Aug 3, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Very true – and like you – I’m amazed that from 40 or 50 yards in that men and women aren’t really that close to each other skill-wise. With only a few exceptions (buried lies in a bunker or super thick rough) where strength comes into play, it seems like men and women should be closer in ability.

I always had a theory that girls generally don’t learn depth perception as kids – but boys almost always do. Playing catch…hitting balls…that kind of thing. Girls play up close games instead.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Aug 3, 2010 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Very true. Boys as a rule, play more quick action games at a young age and perhaps that is the difference. To me though, it seems to be more about imagination. The girls only want to know how, the boys want to know how many ways can I do this?

Really interesting conversation!

At the professional level I believe strength and speed are the two main reasons why more men are able to execute more shots successfully and have more “options” available to them.

But on the “average Joe” golfing level, I have found that my strength is the common sense/ golf course management decisions that keep me in the round against men golfers. Guys can’t help but play the risk reward shots and low percentage options which often lead to penalties. These guys also have the strength and speed, but can’t control it nearly as well so that’s why I can find so many nice Pro-V’s in the woods. :-)

Nope, I play from the “Forward” tees – which is a nice equalizer once we get to our second shots. I have played with the boys from the Whites, but then I get strokes. :-)

I will say that playing with mostly men, I have learned that it doesn’t matter what club I hit as long as I can get it to my destination…I’m usually hitting 2-4 clubs up from guys (with a max of about 200 yards with roll on my 3-wood) so no ego to worry about…I’m always surprised at the guys who get a little bent out of shape if they are hitting 1-2 clubs more than someone else.

I had a match against this woman.

I played off whites, off 10, she off reds, off 28. 3/4 shots, i gave her 14…but I also had to give her 3 courtesy shots as well, (it was a club rule when playing against women. I’d have expected to give her the extra shots if she played from the same tees. It was tough and I lost, lol. Just wondered if you ever came across a rule like that.

by Easingwold on Aug 4, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I LOVE that rule!!! :-)

But have never heard of it. My handicap is from the tees I play, so if I am in a handicap event I will either give or get based on playing from the reds…my HCP is very similar with most of the guys I play with, so we usually just play straight up in “unofficial” matches…with me from the front. My boys will love it if I ask for courtesy shots…and when I say love I mean they will laugh at me. :-)

to refer to Ryan’s blog questions;o)

I don't think being polite

has anything to do with silence,,,,and living to fight another day…..STUB

I have to tell you a TRUE

here….My Wife was Irish and as fiery as she was beautiful….I could always tell when she had had a bad day….an you women have to admit to this…she would pick something to have a fight over….didn’t matter what, as long as she could be verbal…..Well, it didn’t take me long to figure out that if I kept reading the paper an not saying anything….I could drive her nuts….Eventually she would calm down, but I had more fun doing that, and of course never told her …..STUB

If any of the MEN

Who are posting here, have any brains at all….they won’t touch this one with the 10 ft pole…Just remember, silence is the better part of valor…..STUB

LOL - now he says he never sent the texts

Packers and Jets fans must be laughing their butts off this morning when they heard that Favre is now denying that he told anybody that he’s retiring.
