Once Exempted Mickelson Has A Point on Furyk DQ
As we reminded you yesterday, Phil Mickelson has been one of a fortunate few to miss his pro-am tee time in the last four years and not be disqualified for it. Naturally, since that little nugget was resurrected yesterday, Mickelson was asked about his thoughts on the Furyk DQ - particularly in light of him not being DQ'd for missing the pro-am at the '07 Byron Nelson.
In typical Mickelson fashion, he defended himself first.
Referring to his plane being grounded in Arknasas, Mickelson quipped, "[T]he rule was such where if you have an issue like that, you can get an excuse. The airport's closed, what are you going to do? You can't take off. The roads were flooded. I couldn't drive. I didn't have an option."
Sure he did. He could have not participated in the voluntary outing he conducted there for side money. That's neither here nor there, though.
Mickelson then addressed the rule- not only as it favorably applied to him, but to the rest of the field.
"Well, the rule itself applies to only half the field. So if you're going to have a rule that does not apply to everybody, because not everybody played the Pro-Am, you cannot have it affect the competition. It's got to be a different penalty. It can't be disqualification if it only applies to half the field."
Adding later, "I have no idea how the Commissioner let this rule go through. It's ridiculous. I made my viewpoint very clear to him, yes."
Mickelson may want to blame Joe Ogilvie, one of the policy board members that got this rule passed almost a handful of years ago. The four players on the board are outnumbered by five other members, but the suggestion that it was on the Commissioner is a misnomer - at best.
He has a point, though. Usually half the field or less is involved in a pro-am, and it typically falls on better players.
With the pro-am modifications that sponsors can now request - an off-course event in lieu of a round with a pro - Mickelson thought that Furyk could stay in the tournament by doing an alternative activity.
"I thought that that also included if you missed your tee time you were able to make it up by going to the hospitality tent Thursday or Friday, which is why I was so shocked that he ended up being DQed because I thought that was included in that rule change."
Kind of surprising that a guy who is so well aware of the rules would whiff on that one.
The players will have an opportunity in meetings over the next year to push through a policy change, even one specific to the Playoffs. Furyk's DQ likely shed light on a brewing issue that finally had serious impact.

“Typical Mickelson fashion” ? He explained that his situation was different than Furyk’s. Why the cheap shot at Mickelson ? It’s a throwaway line – why turn it into a brick thrown at the guy ?
The rule was passed by the players when it was put into the book – Furyk knows it and knows the reason for the rule. The argument that it only applies to half the field doesn’t hold water past a first glance. Pretty much every player with a card does Pro-Ams every year – some more than others – but the rule has a solid foundation in history. The players weren’t taking it seriously and that was not good.

Because that’s what Mickelson does. He explains the situation, then recuses himself of any blame as it applies to him. Did the same thing earlier this year with the wedge deal.
Mickelson’s argument holds a ton of weight, though. Basically, only half the field can get DQ’d. That’s stupid.

He didn’t recuse himself of anything – where do you get that ? He wasn’t wrong with the wedges either. He played by the rules – and oddly enough, he started playing better after the Ping situation went away.
It’s not stupid if the rank and file of the PGA Tour agreed to the rule. Phil IS wrong on this one – especially since he’s in the group that agreed to it.

He’s not wrong. Change the rule. This is an absolutely ridiculous notion that someone could lose $10MM because of a cell phone.

Furyk won't lose $10 million because of a cell phone. He only has himself to blame.
I’m sure there was an alarm clock and wake-up call service at his lodgings on top of his cell phone alarm. Considering his caddie had the same, that makes six opportunities to wake-up on time to make his pro-am.
Proper prior planning prevents piss-poor performance.

How about the Fractured Fairy Tales ? George of the Jungle – Tom Slick – and Super Chicken ?

All good. And they stand the test of time.
While I was deployed my family would send me the Bulwinkle and Friends box sets. Was able to understand much more of the political humor of those cartoons than when I was a kid.

As I feel left out of this game
Via Geoff Shackleford on Twitter: Joe Ogilvie “I was on the policy board when we made the DQ pro-am rule, a mistake. Miss pro-am, should be a day with sponsor on player’s dime, no DQ”.
Sorry – Ogilve was never in a good cartoon – he’s DQ’d.
Yes – ONE of the guys on the player board disagreed with the punishment – that means the rest of the board voted FOR the rule. In what bizarre world does 1 vote win over 4 ?

I went to college with O'Reilly.
He was editor of the school paper.
Kinda nerdy.
Sorry – Ogilve was never in a good cartoon – he’s DQ’d.

But there was an Ogilvie in the Bad News Bears. Maybe a two stroke penalty is sufficient.

He IS wrong – at least right now.
Typical American whining and finger pointing – instead of saying “wow – we didn’t think of this situation when the rule was put in the books – we need to take another look at it” – all we hear is how evil and iron fisted the PGA Tour is. The players vote on rules like this.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Just a quick idea...
First off – how come all of a sudden the playoffs are such a big deal ? For the last few years, all we have heard were complaints about how bad the FEC was and what a waste of time it is and how much of a money grab it is. Now it’s being blown up into a federal case because it’s a “playoff” event ?
Majors and WGC’s don’t have pro-ams. If, since all of a sudden, the playoffs are such a big deal – just don’t have pro-ams during the playoffs. The pro-am for the Tour Championship has morphed into more of a “hey sponsors – bring out some of your people – we’ll have some clinics and lunch where you can hang out with some of the players, get some lessons, and ask some questions over lunch” kind of thing. It’s been a big hit. The guys volunteer to do the clinics and lunch. Very laid back, and the really bad golfers don’t get embarrassed on the course.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Court, Glad to hear you don't get embarrassed on the course. lol j/k
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
I just tried to find out for you Wendy
No luck. He annouced he was out of the Barclays on monday and didn’t give a reason.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
I wondered if it was a private family emergency
rather than illness/injury which is normally stated. He IS a good egg.
I’m sure this wasn’t the first time Furyk has used his cell phone as an alarm…and I’m guessing it worked just fine every other day he used it – it probably never crossed his mind that he would need a back up to a back up to a back up or whatever. Of course now he probably will!
What if he would have been on the way to the course and an accident occured on the road he was on – he’s stuck there for 45 minutes – is he still DQ’ed?
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
That actually happened to Tom Watson
at the masters one year….got stuck in a traffic jam, got out of the car and started walking along the road…A motorcycle cop came by, Tom hopped on and the cop took him to the course….The guy at the gate almost dropped his teeth when the cop pulled up and Tom was on the back…took him all the way up to the club house…..made it with time to spare…..STUB
I'm just glad I didn't have a Mickelson for every dime I bet on Tiger.
(I’m not sure what that meant either.)
I can't speak for the PGA Tour
But if there was a five car pileup that shut down Rte. 17 more pros would be affected and the Tour would most likely not punish them for something out of their hands.
Oversleeping is not out of Furyk’s hands.
Under the catagory of "nobody likes a bragger"
Joe Ogilve fired an awe inspiring 8-over – putting his name right next to..yep…Jim Furyk on the leaderboard.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Finaly I spoke to Jim
He didn’t have much to say on the topic except for that he has nobody to blame but himself. Of course I took the opportunity to give Jim a shameless plug for my company that does offer, “knock on your door” wake up service, but he already knew that and changed the subject. lol Then we chatted on the putting green about football and thats about it. Speaking of shameless plugs, I told him about waggleroom.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
lol – good work ! your next assignment – HAIR plugs ! :-)
Did he say if he was in a hotel or a house ?
And just why DIDN’T he sign up for your service ? Not a fan of deviled eggs and cigars ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Court lolol
trust me he knows, as we have known each other for a while now. He doesn’t need our services as Jim is a very bright guy and very well traveled as is his family. He just goofed this one time and got ripped off for a five minute delay.. I myself made a mistake a few years back that cost us about 10 grand and have never goofed since. Live and learn.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
yeah - I know he goofed
Ummm – that was a joke…well…except for him missing out on deviled eggs and cigars – his loss :-D

Jimenez would Fire me on the spot.....
