Our Long National Nightmare Is Over! (Hopefully)

Tiger Woods and Elin Nordgren’s divorce has been finalized.

Hopefully, that’s that and the like of TMZ.com and the National Enquirer can return to their sordid business of covering the cocaine-fueled antics of the latest pop music sensation and movie stars having affairs on the sly.  In other words, hopefully they will stop covering golf and golfers, specifically one Eldrick “Tiger” Woods.

Star-divide

Since last November, golf fans have had to endure endless speculation, sin-sationalism and allegations about the marital misconduct of the world’s #1 player. Like rats thrown blocks of cheese, Tiger’s playmates have come out to cash in on their time with him, some going so far as to follow his tournament schedule in nearby strip bars, where they can share their wares ostensibly to fans and locals interested in what “Tiger saw in her.”  Others have gone the reality show or Playboy spread route, that is, after they attempted to extort Woods’ deep pockets.  Nice.

While I am by no means any fan of marital misconduct, I am equally no fan of people trying to turn their fifteen minutes of fame into a lifelong career in the media’s eye after they’ve been exposed for their sordid misdeeds.  Seems like too many of Woods’ concubines did exactly that.  Some of them even seemed to have a plan: 1) bed Woods and 2) tell their story to the media and 3) profit.

I am also no fan of the celebrity culture of our time, where it seems like it is critical for some people to know the private business of “the stars.”   It fuels “scandals” like this, and takes no prisoners without care to who gets hurt.  Imagine Tiger’s children, and the taunts they may have received, for example.  What did they do to deserve any of that?

Truth is irrelevant to too many folks in the media today, and privacy and fairness are even less important.  The only thing that matters is the bottom line and the best way to fatten the wallet is by shouting outrageous allegations at the top of their lungs.   then there are the people who buy into it.  What kind of empty lives are theirs? One has to wonder how much the consumers of this tripe would enjoy having their dirty underwear broadcast to the world at large and how they would enjoy being mocked in return.  Bet they wouldn’t, but when it comes to Britney, Angelina, Madonna, Ronaldo and Tiger, they’re first in line to get “the scoop.”

So now, the divorce papers — public record — of the Woods’ are making the rounds.  Some folks have a voracious appetite for that too, as if reading the dry legal proceedings of the endgame of a divorce will somehow give them a glimpse behind the curtain in a manner of speaking.

And hopefully, that will be the end of that.  Woods is a single man now, and he has every right to do anything he chooses with another willing adult, whoever that is.  If he wants to hang out with a New York nightlife “hostess” (emphasis on the ‘ho’ part) or a Perkins’ waitress, good for him.  It’s his life and his business…and quite frankly, no one else’s except those directly concerned.

Me, I hope that Tiger can now concentrate on his work, which is playing golf.  I also hope people will start seeing Woods as what he is…a golfer.

That’s what Tiger Woods is to me, a great golfing talent and the Babe Ruth of our time.  He has a chance to become the most decorated player ever — but his window of time to break all of the records is growing shorter.  He has the physical abilities now, and he has shown the mental capability in the past.  He is a great champion who knows how to win, and who — thanks t0 his own doings — has to come down a comeback trail now that his personal life is coming back from disarray.  He will have competition, not only from familiar old foes, but also from new young ones who are making their own mark and are actually looking for a chance to duel him on the golf course.

If that’s not enough drama and intrigue for anyone, I really think that says more about them than it ever could Tiger Woods.

Yup you are correct OMP

TW can do whatever he wants now that he is divorced and it wont bother me one bit if he chooses to spend his time with, Inflatable Farm Animals. Like the overly used mantra goes. “It’s None Of Our Business” hehehehe

Jumpn......Inflatable Farm Animals......now that is funny.....but,

it would be an improvement over his previous sweethearts. And now Tiger is the victim. Those mean ole tabloids forced him into a life of sordid adulterous affairs, which led to him becoming an accomplished liar, and of course that all led to him bribing those lecherous slimy tramps to keep them silent. And all of this combines to cause him to play awful golf…..poor Tiger. So now we add to the list of apologists. Court tells us “it’s none of our business” and Tigerhead takes the “He’s a golfer” route, and OMP tells us that somehow Tiger is not so bad, because everyone else is bad. Forget anything he has done or will do, as long as he entertains us with great golf, all is forgiven……let’s all discard our standards and support our morally bankrupt “hero’s”. Me….I will be a fan of those “other” golfers who respect the fans and the game.

Don’t put words in my mouth.

I never said Tiger wasn’t so bad, I said what happens inside his marriage isn’t really much of our business and that no one would want all of their misdeeds aired out in public.

I also said that the tabloid press has made a lot of hay here and I for one am ready for them to go away. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Unless you happen to be able to server a thousand with a couple fish and walk atop water Em, you too probably have a few things in your past you wouldn’t want broadcast and exaggerated by the modern 24×7 media machine.

I am saying that yes, it is time to put all of this behind us and move on. It’s time for Tiger to golf and for us to watch golf instead of hearing who he is diddling after hours. If the past year has moved people beyond being a fan of his, fine, that’s his just deserts for creating two personna. That I have no problem with. What I do have a problem with is the endless stream of sordid gossip that ultimately hurts pro golf.

Two wrongs don't make a right, but

they sure do seem to help those who want to lessen the severity of his misdeeds. I could care less about what happens inside his marriage. As for the “misdeeds aired out in public”, well that’s the risk you take when you engage in that type of activity, especially someone who is in the public eye. I can’t walk on water, but I don’t (never have in 37 years) cheat on my wife either…..and not because of fear of being “outed” in public, but because it is wrong (and I love my wife)……the "aired out in public " is a consequence of those kind of activities.

I have never bought or read a NE nor do I visit TMZ (never heard of it before the fire hydrant), so 99% of what I know or read about this has been here on Waggle Room and I’ve been consistent in my opinion from the start. I agree that it is time to move on, but surely you know that from time to time there are going to be news items concerning this and they will be posted (you posted this) and there will be comments……that’s just the way it is.

As for the sordid gossip hurting golf, you’re right, but the gossip doesn’t hurt golf nearly as much as Tiger’s fall from grace……another bad consequence of his actions, which ultimately created this whole situation.

“Awful golf” for Tiger is a solid year for almost anyone else. So he’s a dirt dog … Ah well. He’s still the best ever.

When a person grows up idolizing Him*, that’s not gonna go away because he snuck in a few extra holes. The people who hate on Him now likely weren’t huge fans to begin with. Nike reported TW apparel sales actually went up dramatically after the scandal. That’s because the true fans felt a need to show others they are still loyal Him, although He was not to his wife.

*Oh Lord I capitalize my pronouns because of You

Fox News just reported that

Elin made a statement. She said she didn’t hit Tiger with a club, and that she had no idea he was cheating on her. I also heard something about the stress made her hair fall out……I’m sure there is more, but that is all my feeble mind absorbed…..:)

Like I said yesterday and EM said again today.

We all comment on Posts that are put in front of us to comment on, nothing more nothing less.

If this posting was not here we would not have commented. I have asked many times for less Tiger and more golf related articles. Six months ago I sugested to Ryan that he do a weekly PROFILE on a tour player each week or every two weeks. Hech there are plenty of guys out there with great stories to tell behind them. How they started out in golf, how long did it take them to get a tour card, what do they do for hobbies etc etc.

I left the Golf Channel Blogs and came here with STUB, EM, Tigerhead, easingwold, handicapmyswing, fairwaysandgreens, and a few others. We all bailed out because of the overload of tiger articles and the arguing over there. We all agree this is a much better blog and we would prefer to have more golf discussion and less tiger.

I haven't read or followed the divorce threads...

and for the most part I agree that all of this is really no longer a productive discussion.

But I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t curious or interested in how it all played out back in November…I was interested in the unwinding of a story that I still can’t quite believe actually happened. I’m still baffled that a man, who seemingly had everything at his fingertips, would choose to take the path that he did.

The Jim Furyk thread talked about rules being rules – sure it’s not fair, and yes, it was an accident, but he knew the rules and had to live with the consequences. I would say the same applies for Tiger – disgusting or not, the media has the power to make the “rules” about what to write about, and all that ensued after the incident can’t be a surprise to anyone. It’s wrong, but there is no such thing as private when you are the most recognized sports person in the world…although I’m still amazed that all of it was kept under wraps for as long as it had.

It’s the parents job to protect their children and their families – so if anyone is to “blame” for this it’s Tiger – he took the risk, knowing the “rules” of being a celebrity, and now he AND his family are living with it. We may not like it, but these “media rules” have been around for a long time now.

I’ve never been on the Tiger fan bus, but as a golfer, I am awed and inspired by his play…and I do hope he will be able to regain that level of play soon.

I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
