Follow Up: Maybe Lefty Shouldn't Go Vegetarian All the Way

Sometimes, posting here is a means of getting further information. I can post questions about a subject that may not be considered already - or are being talked about, just not with hard facts. Usually, there's good, solid information that comes out of the practice of "putting it out there."

Yesterday, we did a post on a moose study that showed diet had a lot to do with osteoarthritis in the Bullwinkles, suggesting that there may be some kind of connection with Phil Mickelson's psoriatic arthritis and his decision to go vegetarian. Though different conditions, certainly, it wasn't clear what the benefit was of mimicking a Triceratops.

Fortunately, we got some info sent to us courtesy of Self Magazine - that magazine I see at the supermarket with kind of attractive female celebs on the cover talking about how their butt got shaped by squats.

Their verdict? Not all parts of being vegetarian are good for psoriatic arthritis.

"Grains and legumes (including soy) typically loom large in vegetarian diets. However, because they are quite rich in carbohydrates, they can moderately elevate blood sugar, which tends to exacerbate inflammation.  Fruit and fruit juice are both high in sugar, which can do the same thing."

So, Lefty has to balance out the sugars and carbs. What do the nutritionists recommend eating?

Fish (especially salmon, sardines, and herring), olives and olive oil, almonds, leafy greens and other colorful vegetables, citrus and berries, garlic, ginger, chili peppers, and curry powder.

What to avoid? They say fried foods, organ meats (such as liver), veal.

No more Bambiburgers for Phil, but going leafy is a good idea. Now, I'm off to Five Guys for lunch. You're welcome, Phil.

Five Guys was recently voted the best fast food on the planet by Zagat’s Guide. I suppose if you are going to go, you may as well go well. :-)

Here, we have a place called Char-Grill that’s nearly as great, but is more of a drive-up (you order your food outdoors) and their food is best late at night, after, ahem, some fermented or distilled fruit juices.

We should all be eating the more veggie-centric diet prescribed by nutritionists. That doesn’t mean an absence of meat, but the 24oz. steak a few times a week and the 1/2 pound hamburgers in between are probably not a great idea for longevity.

A balanced diet is one key to, well, a balanced life.

Too much of one food one way or the other is unhealthy. Veganism – the extreme vegetarian diet – has as many problems nutritionally as 1/2 pound hamburgers and steaks every day.

And folks, french fries don’t really count as vegetables. Technically, yeah, but their value as a food is not that great.

Are you kidding?

I thought only Fred Flintstone could eat a 24oz. steak?

Wendy...when one of my sons was

playing football in college, he was called thunder thighs… they were huge….played offensive guard….Anyhoo, in the town…or just out side really, where the college was located, there was a steak house that raised and processed their own beef….they advertised a 24 oz steak, and if you could eat it ya didn’t have to pay….My son and his buddy, also from the team ate one of those after every home game….The guy that owned the place, said he never saw anything like it….I used to bet him my martinis for the evening the kids would do it…..That was one gigantic piece of meat let me tell you….and it was delicious…..STUB

as long as those aren’t the same nutricionists who can’t make up their minds on eggs – good or bad, or whether a tomato is a vegetable or a fruit….or if ketchup counts as a vegetable. :-)

Court, in my life time, I think the egg

controversy has been almost on going….Sunday, is my day…pork fat rules….Thick sliced bacon…..at least 2 rashers….hash browns, fried in butter….a good full cup measure….Large glass tomato/orange juice….2 LARGE BROWN eggs…yes, the yokes taste better than white eggs….more golden in color also….over easy, 2 pieces….well buttered whole wheat bread. toasted medium….about 2-4 cups dark brew hot coffee….to hell with the nutriconalist that can’t make up their minds….STUB

What's up with "rashers"?

I love that the French believe that too many eggs give them “crise de foie” (liver crisis),
whereas in the old days our parents were exhorted to "go to work on an egg (daily).

Somewhere inbetween perhaps – & with a couple of bacon (thin cut) rashers, for Sunday breakfast/brunch.

Lots of meat used to be great

Until I started getting gout outbreaks in my feet. If you’ve never had one of them, then it’s unlikely that you can understand the scope of the pain that can be caused by what looks like just a little inflammation.

The doctor prescribed me meds to get rid of the flare-ups which worked great, but new ones would pop up frequently. They were awful and debilitating. Then he prescribed me daily meds that were supposed to ward off further attacks but it didn’t do squat.

By chance, I spoke to a dietician friend who recommended basically avoiding a lot of the stuff that Phil is supposed to avoid. Further web research told me that I should limit the amount of animal protein that I take in on a daily basis. That worked for me and I haven’t had an attack in at least 2-3 years.

I didn’t go vegetarian, but I just limit the amount of meat I have at any particular meal.

I had asked my doctor (who I consider to be a solid doctor that I trust) if diet would help me and he said probably not. If I hadn’t listened to the nutritionist, I’d probably still be suffering the attacks.

It’s not that he’s a quack, it’s just that in the field of health, people get compartmentalized and he just didn’t know the ins and outs of nutrition. Much the same as modern medicine leaves almost no room for the role of psychological factors in legitimate medical conditions because doctors don’t understand psychology and psychologists don’t understand medicine.

The point being that all of the disciplines have something to offer and just because they can’t seem to decide if eggs are good or bad doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t have our ears open.
