Celtic Tiger: McIlroy Calls Woods Easy Prey for Ryder Cup Euros
On the day after the American Ryder Cup captain announced the eight names that automatically qualified for the squad that will travel to Wales in October, much buzz continues about the names still unknown for the Yankee side.
Corey Pavin said in his press conference that Tiger Woods is near the top of his list for players that could be among his four hand-picked team members. Woods, who finished the Ryder Cup points race in 12th position, has said he would like to be picked by Pavin and participate.
Apparently, Rory McIlroy would like that, too.
"I would love to face him. Unless his game rapidly improves... I think anyone in the European team would fancy their chances against him," McIlroy was quoted as saying in a report.
"There are a lot of American players playing better than him at the minute but it's always an advantage to have Tiger Woods in your team," McIlroy added.
"I think he'll (Pavin) pick him. I don't think it would go down too well in the States if he wasn't picked."
If the Euros are chomping at the bit to face El Tigre, what does that say of his long gone intimidation factor?
And, for what it's worth, I think this reads a whole lot worse than it probably would sound. So, don't expect another 9 and 8 incident.

With all due respect, Ryan, I think your headline is a lot
stronger than Rory’s words in the story.
Really, it’s all for the pun :)

Best Not Kick Sleeping Tigers
We all know what history shows can happen when you p/o one Eldrick Tiger Woods.
He may be in a slump, but only a fool would think he is going to airmail the Ryder Cup, if indeed he is selected to play.
You mean, like red?

I don't believe that TW has ever had the same intimidation factor
at the Ryder Cup. The two quotes from Rory above seem pretty factually correct to me. Having said that, there are signs of a renewed focus/determination on TW’s part. If he’s picked, I do think he will give it his all this time.
Tiger has much to prove..to golf AND the Ryder Cup
Tiger’s record in the Ryder Cup is spotty on the surface – 10-13-1. That is, until you account for this: Woods has lost only once in singles, and his losses have almost all been in the pairs matches. By himself, he is a ferocious competitor. With Phil Mickelson, not so much.
You could make the case that Tiger is no good with other players, that he is a lone wolf, but his President’s Cup record suggests otherwise.
Overlook him at your own peril. Even though his game is shot by his standards he still has a couple of months to get Sean Foley to help and more than likely a few FedEx Cup playoff tournaments to hone his game. I think he’ll be a solid team member come October.

Rory's OK
Call me crazy, but I think Rory’s got more than enough game to say whatever the hell he wants about Tiger Woods. I’d love to see Tiger get pissed and go head-to-head with Rory in singles at the Ryder Cup, thinking he’s going to put the young man in his place. Somewhere around the 5th hole he’d realize he’s not messing around with Stephen Ames.

I'd Like To See That Too
I must be getting old, because Tiger is now “Old Guard” and McIlroy is a “Young Gun” looking to take his place at the top of the game.
It could be a match for the ages if both players are going on well, which is perfectly possible.

Sure – Rory’s fine – and pretty much correct…and so was Stephen Ames at the time…and Ian Poulter….it’s just not smart to do something that might wake the sleeping giant. Tiger’s play has been attrocious for the most part. I wish he’d quit pulling the Bret Favre on whether he thinks he should be on the team or not – but why take the chance on saying something that snaps him back to attention ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
that’s not a tough question – it’s a question designed to get someone to say something outrageous so it can be spewed all over TV, radio, print, and interweb.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Agreed, Court, but that also makes it a tough question,
unless you simply dodge it, which might’ve been a good strategy. Where was his caddie when this question was asked?
I Love the Ames Story...
Hole Seven: Steven Ames
The Taunt: “Anything can happen. Especially where he’s hitting the ball.” — Stephen Ames was smiling as he said it, before his 2006 Accenture Match Play Championship first-round appointment with Tiger. But he soon regretted it.
Tiger’s Reaction: Woods won 9&8, after winning every hole on the front nine. Only a halve on number 10 prevented the “perfect” 10&8 victory.
