Jack Nicklaus Schools Johnny Miller on Putting
Earlier in the week, Jack Nicklaus went about Christening his new golf course in Benton Harbor, Michigan, with a $1 million team skins game featuring him, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, and Johnny Miller. The four were switching off teams every few holes when they came to the par 5 10th.
Then the storytelling from a caller on the PGA Tour Network takes over. (Or at least a paraphrasing of it.)
The green at the 10th is 10,500 square feet and has two tiers, with an 8 foot mass - nearly a wall - separating the two.
On this hole, Palmer and Miller were teamed together and facing a 100ft or so putt. Palmer hits his putt as hard as he can. It goes up the hill, stops, and comes back to Palmer. Miller sees this, tries to grab his lob wedge from the bag.
Nicklaus yells down to Miller, "You're not hitting lob wedges on my green!" and starts to walk down the hill to them. The Golden Bear nearly trips.
He meets Miller, tells him, "Let me show you how to make this putt" with a wry smile. Nicklaus drops the ball, whacks it and, well...
