Confirmed: Pavin Did Not Speak With Golf Channel About Tiger

Last night, a report came from John Hawkins at Golf Channel saying Jim Gray had spoken with American Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin about the possibility of selecting Tiger Woods with one of his four picks in the event that Tiger misses the squad.

Hawkins, through Gray, quotes Pavin as saying, "Of course I’m going to [pick him]. He’s the best player in the world."

After reading the story, I e-mailed a source within the Pavin camp to confirm the reporting and get some of Pavin's rationale for the early call.  What I got back was surprising.

The source said, "Corey has not talked to one media outlet this week. Not one!"

"So I have no idea where Golf Channel would draw that conclusion," reiterating that Pavin has had no contact with the media.  His pre-PGA Championship press conference is today at noon with European captain Colin Montgomerie.

There appears to be a conflict with the Gray report. And this morning, Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin confirmed via Twitter that he was "misquoted" concerning any remarks about Tiger.

For the record, @golfchannel and Jim Gray has misquoted me re: picking Tiger. I never said such a thing and will not say a thing until 09/07less than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

Is it plausible deniability, or a leak, perhaps?

I cannot imagine that Gray would pull this out of thin air.

Then again, Tiger Golf Channel is hardly the paragon of sports journalism.

You’ve seen Jim Gray in action and can still say that ?

Pavin just confirmed on Twitter too.

This just reinforces my pre-existing belief that Jim Gray is a complete and utter heel.

good lawwwdy

I watched the 2 hour presentation of “LIVE FROM” last night. “TIGER OVERLOAD” They spent an entire 4 minutes on multiple player interviews, but repeated the Tiger Ryder Cup story 4 times in that 2 hr time period. Honestly it was so bad that my girlfriend walked out of our hotel room because I wouldn’t change the channel. hahaha Ten more minutes into it I shut it off myself and headed downstairs to the bar only to find her and several other co-workers and bar patrons talking about the over-blown coverage of Tiger on TGC and guess what ? It was on every TV in the lounge. LOL I used to respect Jim Grey as a formidable Boxing announcer and interviewer, but he is GAGA over tiger and is now part of the Golf Channel TW Fan Club. I would not be surprised one bit if Ryans information is true and if it is I hope TGC and Jim Grey pay for the FALSE oversensationalized reporting. BTW Ryan, I did see Jim Grey make that statement myself on “Live From”

you respected this clown even after the Pete Rose interview ? He lost all credibility with that one, then proceded down the Geraldo Rivera career track. Why xxx Golf Channel hired him is still a mystery to me.

I respected him as a BOXING announcer and interviewer for his knowledge

Of the sport and for asking the right questions and not loaded ones. He was a cut above Larry Merchant with his interviews.

That's the one that did it for me too

That was a complete and utter embarrassment. Why was I not surprised that he laid the LeBron James egg last month? This guy is the most self-serving “reporter” that I’ve ever seen in my life and the Geraldo comparison is all too accurate. Every time I hear his voice, I want to retch.

OK there is a Hawkins article regarding this here.

http://www.thegolfchannel.com/tour-insider/the-only-option-38889/

Then this tidbit.

When Golf Channel contributor Jim Gray asked U.S. captain Corey Pavin if he would add Woods to his squad – provided Tiger doesn’t qualify with a decent showing at this week’s PGA Championship – the skipper left no doubt where he stood on the matter. Yes, Pavin told Gray, he would give Woods a spot

How in the world is TGC allowed to print such a thing if it isn’t true quoting Corey Pavin. I guess one would have to believe Pavins twitter message.

This is the same problem ESPN has when they start interviewing each other. The tendency is to just go with what the fellow employee says instead of doing due diligence to get confirmation. Hawkins and Gray are both xxx Golf Channel people…and both are huge mistakes to have on the air.

I tried to follow Corey Pavin on twitter.

But he comes across as extremely defensive and bitter as well as someone that holds a grudge forever. Now, I don’t claim to know everything about the guy based on random 140-character statements (other than the fact that he likes to gamble), but I don’t think his personality bodes well for the U.S.’s Ryder Cup chances.

Also, Jim Gray is having a hall-of-fame caliber Bad Month+.

It's true that Corey comes across as v. defensive on twitter

& lashes out at any supposed criticism. I don’t know who Jim Gray/Grey is, but I’ll take Corey’s word for it until proved otherwise.

This Just In

The plot thickens. LOL

Gray contends that the two had a brief conversation Tuesday in the Whistling Straits clubhouse and Pavin said, "Of course I’m going to [pick him]. He’s the best player in the world."

When contacted Wednesday, Gray says that he stands by the report.

Hhmmm – who to believe – The captain of the Ryder Cup, or a disgraced reporter who has time and time again gotten stories wrong and proven that he is more about himself than the story – tough call.

Someone has some Splaaaaaaaainin to do.

I think Pavin and Grey need to “Man Up” and get on camera together to clear things up.

I believe Pavin at this point.

"Gray first stated that Pavin said “of course I would pick him. He’s the #1 player in the world.” After the controversy Gray said that Pavin said, “Of course I want him on the team, …” There’s a huge difference between “would pick him” and “want him on the team.” What’s more. If Pavin said the latter, then Gray did in deed misqoute him."

Then again, Pavin said he never spoke with Grey at all.

Ok this just in....

I just spoke to a friend in the Clubhouse at Whistling Straits and he tells me that, Jim Grey is now saying that …Pavin is being “disingenuous” denying that he told Grey that he was picking tiger for the Ryder Cup. LOLOL. The plot thickens.

I’ll be back shortly, I’m gonna head over to the clubhouse and see what the chatter is.

LIVE UPDATE

I just saw Jim Grey down by the clubhouse and he is looking a little sheepish, LMAO

He was surrounded by other reporters asking HIM the questions. CNN and Sports Illustrated were present.

Other than that I ran into Camillo Villegas on the way over and he was heading to the range.

According to the post, a “source” from Pavin’s camp said he hasn’t talked to any media outlets all week, not Pavin himself, and I’m assuming that just means in a formal capacity. Gray and Pavin could have brushed past each other in a hallway and had a two-line exchange and no one from Pavin’s camp would even know about it.

Holy Bar-B-Que and jinglly spurs

Ya gotta love this crap….it’s getting like a couple of women at the bar, both eyeing the same guy….The only one I would believe until Tiger either plays his way on the team or Cory picks and doesn’t pick his highness, is Cory himself…..and TX…that was a good one….you keep that up, and Wendy won’t be able to lay a glove on ya so to speak…..STUB

Reports now state the two had to be physically seperated...

Apparently Jim Gray went up to Pavin shortly after everything hit the fan and called Pavin a “liar”:

Pavin said that Gray must have "misunderstood’ what Pavin said when they talked yesterday (so they did talk, but Pavin never said that about Tiger). Following that conference, most of the media leaves, and Gray confronts Pavin, shouting at him that he was a liar, etc. Pavin thinks that during this time Gray is making hand gestures towards his wife and shouts at Gray to “stay away from my wife” and they had to be physically separated.

The Pavin source

seems to be Pavin’s wife (sorry if I am incorrect), but if so she is totally unreliable. She would toe the Pavin company line and never worry about credibility. She proved herself to be dense (sorry to be so frank) on twitter earlier in the year….to the point where I think she was shut down. I’m no fan of Jim Gray, but I have a hard time believing he just made these quotes up from thin air. If I was asked to give an opinion I’d say Corey said exactly what Gray reported but thought it was off the record.

by kvncane on Aug 11, 2010 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

My guess is

That Pavin said it differently, and Grey spun it to create more sizzle and sensationalizm, which isn’t at all uncommon over at The Golf Channel.

That's my thought

We could sit here all day coming up with ways that Pavin could have spoken similar words and yet his intent could have been something completely different. Hell, he could have spoken the exact words that Gray quoted with a kind of sarcastic or flippant tone and it would be clear to most that he was saying something completely different.

It’s become clear to me over the years that there are some people that are just too dense to get sarcasm and it wouldn’t surprise me if Jim Gray is one of those people. I mean think about it. Pavin gets asked if Tiger is going to be a pick. The guy who is playing like crap this year, who just had is worst tournament EVER as a pro, who seems mentally checked-out, and who has a mediocre Ryder Cup record to begin with. Is it so hard to imagine Pavin saying those those words in a sarcastic tone? A vast majority of us would take that to mean, “are you nuts?” and it most certainly would be a misquote.

And then, Pavin is put in a position where he has to deny it because it’s kind of insulting to Tiger to talk about him in that kind of tone on the record.

Then again, if Pavin is standing by his assertion that words like those never crossed his lips at all, I’m still inclined to believe him over Jim Gray 100 times out of 100.
