Lexi Thompson Will Not Seek LPGA Tour Membership
Lexi Thompson - the 15 year old phenom who recently turned pro - will not seek LPGA Tour membership, according to her teacher Jim McLean. Appearing with me on Tee Off With Jamie Watson on WVIE-AM in Baltimore, McLean explained that Thomspon will not seek an exemption from LPGA Tour Commissioner Mike Whan on the LPGA Tour's 18 year old age floor.
Players can petition the commissioner for an exemption if they choose to attempt to play the LPGA Tour full time.
McLean said Thompson and her parents feel Lexi should live her full life, remain in school, and not live a tour life. That was inspired by what happened in the case of Michelle Wie, McLean said.
Thompson's teacher admits that creating momentum and generating a string of solid results will be more difficult for Lexi because of the lack of tournament reps. She is only allotted six sponsor exemptions per year under the LPGA Tour rules for non-members.
