BBC Coverage of Open Championship to Air on ESPN 3

In my excitement about the British Open and St. Andrews (alas, I won't be there), I checked out ESPN's broadcast schedule for the championship.  And to my surprise, I found a del.icio.us nugget of programming gold.  ESPN 3 - formerly ESPN360.com - will air live BBC coverage of the Open Championship for all four days!

Peter Alliss!  PETER ALLISS!

To get you even more excited, here's a video that Alliss shot last week to preview the championship.

I'm glad about this...

to me, this coverage can’t be beat. Alliss the king of the mic, Wayne Grady and Ken Brown in support. Torrance is there too, not keen on him, but even he can’t spoil the quality of this coverage. hope you all enjoy it, cheers.

No Dice

I don’t have ESPN3 so it’ll be Mike Tirico for me.

lol – my buddy with the XM show found a clip of the 1978 Open at St Andrews with Peter Alliss calling the action….and Sean Connery doing the introduction. It’s pretty cool…try not to listen to the music, though. :-)

It came from a box set of Open DVD's

Connery did a few of them in the ’70’s. We get ESPN here, it shows them from time to time.

sitting here watching this part of the show – seeing all these guys and how they looked in ‘78 – right about the 7 minute mark, Ballesteros has to take a drop after hitting his shot into the burn on the first hole. They didn’t get to hold the ball out in front of them the way it’s done today – they had to drop backwards over their shoulder. interesting to watch.

32 even...

The hotel on 17 looks so much different now of course. Thankfully, the R and A just about looks the same as when Old Tom Morris is teeing off

no kidding. This is the year I graduated high school. Faldo looks like Jimmy Connors with the hair. He was 20 or 21 at the time.

OH ! And look – these guys are hitting DRIVER on the 17th….now who would have ever thought that a driver should be used on that hole ? Oh wait – the R&A just brought driver back for this year’s Open. :-)

Always liked Faldo and Connors

they never gave in. Didn’t like their hairstyles then, but I was in the Navy at the time and would have taken them :)

lol – I was a big Connors fan, too – but you know, between he and McEnroe, Connors was MUCH more crude and disgusting on court than McEnroe. Mac was louder, but Connors did things that could get you arrested in polite company. (lol)

He who is loudest...

McEnroe won less than Connors too ..7 slams to Jim’s 8..but is legend here for his Wimbledon tantrums…plus the epic ’80 final with Borg.

by Easingwold on Jul 7, 2010 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

McEnroe never threw a tantrum in a Wimbledon final – it was the strangest thing. And he never carried on in a match against Borg. Those were two things he had ulimate respect for.

"To the moon. Alliss!"

Just kidding. I think Allis is terrific, so my comment was just kinda crammed in.

Free golf tee (not a shirt) for the first person who gets that.
