Lebron James Is Copying Tiger's February Press Conference
Lebron James has decided that he will announce the team that he will sign his next contract with in a special that will air on Thursday night at 9pm on ESPN. The Bottom Line on the network says that an "independent source" told ESPN reporter Chris Broussard that this would happen.
Presumably, James will make the decision in Bristol because it will create an extra air of suspense about his future. After all, what intrigue would there otherwise be in an hour-long special to talk about one player's nine figure contract?
An event like this has already happened this year on February 19, when Tiger Woods held a press conference at TPC Sawgrass.
When Woods' team at IMG announced that Tiger would be holding a press conference, they did so by giving the media a little bit more than two days' notice. The public was made aware on February 17.
IMG contacted the Tour about the arrangement earlier in that week, asking them to be able to use TPC Sawgrass' clubhouse for the announcement. James' team contacted ESPN less than three days prior to his planned announcement, though clearly of a different tone than what Woods shared.
The theme of both announcements - while clearly divergent from one another - was and is evident. One being an apology, another leading to some apologies.
A small number of media are expected to be in the same room as James for the announcement. Presumably, they would be ESPN writers, the AP, and maybe Reuters. Woods' team tried unsuccessfully to negotiate a similar arrangement with the GWAA, though the AP, Bloomberg, and Reuters ultimately covered the event.
Other media were invited to watch the Woods press conference/apology on a feed at the nearby Sawgrass Marriott. It remains unclear if other media will travel to a satellite location near wherever James makes his announcement. Some 600 media gathered for Woods' fairly predictable statement. Seemingly fewer would appear for King James, especially if the decision were made in sleepy Akron, OH. (At least Ponte Vedra has the Stadium Course. Not sure the former site of the LPGA tournament sponsored by Wendy's would appeal to basketball scribes.)
Perhaps the only major distinction between the two announcements is their timing. Woods made his announcement at 11am. Then again, all of the major networks carried the full statement. James will make his decision in primetime, but on a single network. The Worldwide Leader is reporting that James seeks to sell advertising for the program that will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs. It is also the best way to ensure all eyes are on James going into baseball's all-star break.
No wonder there has been such a strong negative reaction to the ESPN report, even from Bristol employees. They've seen it before, and it didn't live up to the hype.

sigh – once again – you have it backwards. This is not…repeat NOT…a LeBron James joint. This is ESPN – pure and simple. They are putting it together to get people to tune into….ready ?….ESPN ! You will see some regular NBA reporters, maybe Charles Barkley and some other TNT personalities – but this is not LeBron James doing whatever he wants however he wants. This is ESPN playing on the “King James” nickname and having him call a court for a royal announcement on the hottest off season NBA story around.

you’re giving him too much credit….and Tiger wasn’t the first to do this sort of thing…happens all the time in the political world.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
That’s the thing. It happens in politics. Not with athletes. Before these two, this thing only happened when athletes retired or died.

and it’s still not interesting ! You’d think these managment people would know that people aren’t going to tune in for an hour long show just to hear LeBron make an announcement in the last 5 minutes of the show. The only smart thing this does is that it limits the barage of questions he would have to field in an open press conference.

LISTEN UP HERE YOU TWO
I got the whole ball of wax for ya…..How about if NO ONE SIGNS HIM….Yea baby….no 6 figure income…..Do the same for all the over paid, under performing dummy’s….Make them get a real day job …or better yet have to flip burgers over a hot grill for not more than minimum wage…..We cant pay our TEACHERS a decent living wage, but bestow bundles of loot on these clowns….When it costs a working mans whole days pay to sit in the center field bleachers….SOMETHINGS WRONG FOLKS…..stop paying these clowns and watch how fast the ticket prices come down…case in point….at the new temple to excess in Dallas TX, it cost 60.00 to get an individual PIZZA….ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME ? A PIZZA….Don’t know when the great unwashed are going to wake up,,,but…..if their that stupid to pay those prices….maybe they should get fleeced….jist sayin…..STUB
lol – hey – I don’t disagree with you. My big pet peeve is the rookie salaries. I’d lke to see these guys make two or three hundred thousand dollars tops their first few years in the league. (of course – insure them with millions just in case of a career ending injury) – but make them EARN a big salary and learn the game before making more money than vererans.
$60.00 for a pizza ? Seriously ? And people buy them ?

YUP...your not allowed to bring anything into the stadium
everything has to be purchased inside….OL SMILEY JONES is better at picking your pocket than OL TIMMY….I have said for years…THERE IS NO ATHLETE WORTH MORE THAN 200Grand a year….My gawd….THEIR GETTING PAID TO PLAY A GAME AND ENTERTAIN US..If they had to get day jobs, what do you think they would make ? .Do you know that, at least in the USA, that only 1% of working people make that kind of money or more? So what does that tell you about the other 99% And who supports these pampered babies ? Yup, the 99%. I gave up season Cowboy tickets when Smiley raised the price to 75.00 per game per seat, PLUS..the parking and everything else…Now that’s years back…and hey folks….I survived…..jist saying…..STUB
I’m not sure what the percentage of people making that kind of cash-eesh has to do with anything. It’s a free market system. You’re talking about maybe 2000 guys in the four major sports in a country of 310 million people. They make what the market allows. Nobody is forced to spend their money on their favorite team.
Is there a rule that says that mo’ money equals mo’ smarts ? And wouldn’t you love to be the guy who sells the $60 pizzas ? He must be laughing his butt off every time one of those jewels gets rung up. :-)

I often say,
a sports star is only worth what teams are willing to pay for him. The fact that he is very hard to replace ( say a Kobe ) makes him worth millions. I, on the other hand working in a factory, am easily replaced, therefor worth much much less.
careful with that kind of talk, Eas. The socialists over there might have you “impounded” for that kind of free thinking and understanding. :-)

Tell me about it
What I find kind of funny is when people complain about the price of food at major sporting events. Well, for one, it wouldn’t cost that much if people weren’t willing to pay it. And on top of that, here’s a novel idea, go three hours without sucking down ridiculously priced food and beverages and then go nuts afterward for a fraction of the price somewhere else.
They complained here about “personal seat licenses” and the cost of tickets when the new stadium went up. Meanwhile, the stadium is full every single week and people are going into hock to buy season tickets. If I was an owner, I’d raise the price every five minutes until I figured out where people would stop paying it. There’s something humorously ironic about people whining about prices as they stand there forking over wads of cash.

Ridiculous
One thing is for certain… LeBron is a hustler. He and ESPN are monetizing a simple announcement. I wish he’d just tweet his decision like Kevin Durant did. Since he’s not, I can only hope no one tunes in for the announcement as it compromises the integrity of ESPN’s reporters.

The word out now is that LeBron will be making the big announcement in the first 15 minutes of the show – at :07 or :12. Then they’ll be switching to different locations for interviews and reactions. To make matters worse, Jim Gray will be handling things with LeBron.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I've heard Gray's first question to LeBron is whether he should take this opportunity
to talk about Pete Rose’s gambling.
And I'm not saying good announcers have to have been good athletes in their heydays, but
I’m guessing Jim Gray was last pick in every makeup schoolyard game he’s ever played, if he ever played any.
I just googled info re above.
Gray was second-to-last pick in one basketball game in which Rich “The Rocket” Lerner was last pick.
