What About A Golf Red Zone Channel?
The golf.com boys did their weekly roundtable - delayed a day by Exploding Christmas - and included a few lines about Golf Channel's difficulties in balancing out all of the events that they contractually show. This came in part out of a conversation that Damon Hack and I had on Sunday morning when Golf Channel left the beginning of the French Open three man playoff to show Tiger Woods hack it around Aronimink in early round AT&T National coverage.
Jim Herre: What if Golf Channel cut in and out of several live telecasts, lingering wherever there was compelling action?
Damon Hack: Direct TV does exactly that with its NFL Red Zone package. Whenever a team is inside the 20, the viewer can switch to the action. Might work in golf! The Back Nine Package!
It sounds pretty appealing, doesn't it? Golf coverage these days - particularly on CBS (and Golf Channel when CBS has the weekend) - is so slow. There is very little action actually broadcast. In fact, this week, Golf Channel spent a good three minutes on a blimp shot so that the booth team could chat it up with each other.
For golf fans that actually want to, you know, watch golf when they tune in, a rapid fire channel that skipped between tournaments could really be interesting. Sure, the major tours would never sign up for it because it would just crush their distribution agreements and ad cards, but it sounds like a good idea.
In fact, I'd happily anchor it.

That’s why I love playing golf, but can’t stand watching it. I’ll definitely watch more tournaments besides the majors if there was a golf equivalent of the Red Zone channel.

The golf red zone would be great.
I watch all tournaments when I’m not attending and I don’t find it to be boring at all. Most “real golf fans” do not, but I cant speak for everyone. The Golf Channel reached a new “low” this past Saturday by cutting away from the French Open Playoff only to be in such a rush to show Tiger hacking it around the course at T-35th at that time. Like I said in the other blog posting. If that was tiger in that playoff they woulf have never cut away. TGC is nothing but a marketing sham owned by Comcast disguised as a golf channel. I doubt very much thats what Arnie had in mind when he started the channel. What a disgrace they have become.

I had no idea Arnie started the Golf Channel. Well, he was always good at
playing his way out of trouble.

Okay, who's the personality coach for
Rich Lerner?

Ahhh TXQ , tapping on my monitor
It’s pretty obvious he doesn’t have one, but if he did, I am guessing it would be either the Tin Man form the Wizard of Oz or one of the production staff members of the movie Puppet Master.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
Other than TGC
Lerner has no backround in golf or sports reporting at all. In fact, prior to being appointed, ( job handed to him ) on TGC, Lerner was a Marketing Manager for Comcast. He is a puppet who does what he is told. All his writings are full of edit copy and he reads what he is told to read from a monitor.

Alright, I gotta ask as the purveyor of the site: where’d the intel come from? (You can shoot me an email about it if you want.)
Find me! Email: ryan@thegolfnewsnet.com, Twitter: http://twitter.com/waggleroom, or Facebook: http://facebook.com/waggleroom.

I'll e mail you tomorrow Ryan
Its public information if you look around.

I’d like to know, too. His non-golf background isn’t a secret, but the guy does write his own copy…which really isn’t anything to brag about.

It's an interesting idea...
…but who’s going to pull it off ? Certainly not xxx Golf Channel – this is the bunch that hired Scott Walker and Tom Abbott, and now has Winn McMurray hosting what is masquerading as a real golf discussion show. The same crew that blew a decision on Sunday to show the AT&T instead of the European Tour playoff – contractually excusable, but come on.
Who runs the NFL’s Red Zone ? Is it the satellite company or the NFL network ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
lol. Funny – but not accurate. That hour and a half slot wasn’t just inserted into the schedule Saturday night. They have been doing early coverage most of the season. They didn’t just add it this week to show Tiger…but that’s the way it worked out. This was just another in the brain dead decisions made down there. It’s possible that it wasn’t even a human decision over the holiday weekend.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
She is ! (I wish) But she’s a “spokes model” type – not a golf expert…then again…neither are most of the people on xxx Golf Channel.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
You know, if they
hire a couple of more Win’s and Lauren Thompson’s……we wouldn’t care if they spoke Latin.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
hey em66
Ping, had some bad things to say about you and I in the GC blog,, The blog about tigers press conference. I blasted him myself. what a jerk he is after I helped him acquire sonme ping items.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
Yeah.....I saw it. I haven't been over there in
weeks, but I heard about the news conference and went and stirred up things…..just a little…..lol
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Court one thing I did notice.
OK two things,,,,#1 The early coverage starts at 12:30pm and not 12:00 PM as it did this past saturday. #2 When they do start the 12:00 PM coverage it is usually a 1/2 hour Golf Central report. NOT THIS WEEK !! WHY ? Because tiger was ON COURSE early as never before. I can not verify this of course but it seemed pretty transparent abd obvious to me and the others I was watching with. No Golf Central 1/2 hr for the first time ever and they cut right over to tiger playing. JMHO
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
You’re looking at the wrong thing. They do 90 minutes of early coverage – THEN the 30 minute “pregame” show you’re talking about before the network takes over. The times may change a bit from week to week depending on what time the network coverage starts – but it’s the same 2 hour block.
All this aside – there isn’t really any defense for the screwup – and they are hearing it from all sides.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I hope they do hear it from all sides court.
As “The Golf Channel” has reached a new low.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
Court they usually do a 30 minute Golf Central pre-game
and then an hour and a half of live golf early coverge and then a half hour pre-game prior to national network coverage
