Jamarcus Russell, His Codeine Syrup & the PGA Tour Drug Program

Former Oakland Raiders QB and all-time NFL draft bust Jamarcus Russell was arrested today in a DEA sting for possession of a controlled substance.  Russell was arrested for holding possession without a prescription for it. That substance is called "codeine syrup" and is the active ingredient in "purple drank."

The DEA and the Department of Justice consider substances with codeine, like cough syrup, as part of Schedule V of their controlled substances.  Schedule V is for substances that are basically almost harmless or, in their words, "has a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States."

The good folks at Grass City would tell you how best to create and use your codeine syrup.  From a 2008 thread, a couple of users recommend using approximately 2-3 tablespoons of syrup per dosage.  And the codeine is best combined with the antihistamine promethazine.  That's what is called purple drank, when combined with Sprite.  (Those Lebron ads are paying off, Coca-Cola!)

Best part about codeine for a pro golfer who wants to slow his roll?  It's completely legal, provided there is a prescription for it.  Codeine is legal under the PGA Tour's anti-doping program to treat colds and for use as a pain med.  Make it into purple drank and it may well work a whole lot better than the feared Beta blockers, which are banned under PGA Tour.

wow – that was a long way to go to make a point – but it is interesting. BUT – should we, your readers be concerned with your knowledge of not only the correct spelling of “drank”, but how to make it ? :-D

I’m pretty sure that beta blockers have been disproved enough for use in golf that players stay away from it past an experimental use. Beta Blockers prevent explosive actions like hitting a driver or a shot from rough. IMO – “Purple Drank” is more of a street drug than something a PGA Tour player would get involved in using.

I thought Kobe Bryant was the Sprite guy – haven’t seen any LeBron commercials for Sprite.
