Can Hull Foil Yani Tseng's 54 Hole Lead Yet Again?

Through three rounds of the Ricoh Women's British Open, Yani Tseng has played nearly flawless golf.  Fortunate to avoid any hint of weather at Royal Birkdale, Tseng has fired three consecutive rounds of 68.

For the first time, the two-time major winner has a 54 hole lead in a major championship.  That has left her with a four shot lead over her nearest competition.  It just so happens that the player sitting in second place is Katherine Hull.  The Australian player has just one LPGA Tour win to her credit.  That win is the 2008 CN Canadian Women's Open.

Hull made a comeback on the final day from six strokes back to take the title.  And who was it that held the 54 hole lead entering that Sunday?  Of course.  Yani Tseng.  Tseng shot 77 that day to finish two back of Hull.

Closing her round with five consecutive birdies, Hull got into position for her first major championship.  This is a particularly unique position for Hull as she has never finished inside of the top 40 in this tournament.

Tseng, though, will be tough to stop on the path to her third major.  A win tomorrow would leave her just one win shy of the career grand slam and give her a second major this season.  She has dropped just one shot in 54 holes.  With a strong cushion and little to indicate that the weather will be cruel nor her form will disappear, Tseng looks set to make a major as the third of her four wins on the LPGA Tour.

Not by herself – she’s going to need some help from Tseng. She has played some amazing golf for three days – under control and patient for 54 holes. Tseng’s going to be tough to beat.

Tseng is stepping away from too many shots

and has developed the ability of Monty to hear butterfly wings. She’s definitely nervous.

No, no, no

You can’t BBQ butterfly wings. You make a very delicate batter, dip them in and deep-fry them ’til lightly gold. I like them with hoisin or just light soy sauce.

I noticed that Wendy

but on the 18th it looks like they are trying to give it to each other.

Hard to say, Eas. The girl has a boatload of talent, but hasn’t been able to put it together except in 3 majors. She only has one LPGA regular tournament win. She comes across more as an Angel Cabrera at this point.

She’s a blast to watch.

The way she took apart the field the 1st 3 days was impressive.

She tightened up again down the stretch…but if she can conquer her nerves, I see her winning more majors than Anneka.

Don't get me wrong

Nothing against Katherine Hull, but I would have felt sick for Yani if she had missed that putt to win.

That 6ft. putt to win was very impresssive

I often joke “This one for the Open” (any Open) as I putt the 18th. Don’t like to think of how many of them I’ve missed.

On Friday I felt a bit like Heather

of RealWomenGolf as I made some incredible putts in front of that nice ex-sailor – but I didn’t shoot 76 like her, more’s the pity.

What did you shoot ?

I once played matchplay against this woman member at my old club..I (off 10 ) have to give her 18 shouts at 3/4…I thought oh…she must just tap it along. I hit my 250 yard drive down the 1st…her tee was 50 yards ahead…and she hit it past my ball. I had a tough day and did well to lose it on the 18th.

I shot an 86 which whilst not fantastic considering how often I play it

was not a total embarassment. He was a long but erratic driver (I don’t think more than 250 yds though), whereas I’m dead straight off the tee but not more than 180 yds. I only outdrove him twice when he duffed it. We didn’t keep his score (except in the sense of honour off the tee), but in the end I think it was pretty even as he found more bunkers/trees than we did. There’s only 1 tee at our club where I have a distinct advantage – my favourite of course.

The 8th remains my favourite TEE - par 5 uphill

Blind shot uphill from the yellow/comp. tees, o/b on the left, trees/ rough on the right for the slicers. Red tees – nothing but fairway ahead – yes, oh yes!
