The History of the Tiger-Obama T-Shirt Meme

Obamatiger_medium

During the week of the British Open, a Twitter follower of ours tweeted the pic that Geoff Shackelford has posted on his site of a Bruce Vilanch impersonator wearing a shirt in some US airport Love Field in Dallas that reads, "Give Tiger A Break, Obama Is Screwing the Whole Country."

Well, seems like the photo has been around longer than that.  Maybe back to July 16 or so, depending on which Internet site you search.  The meme has been around even longer.  In fact, the Dallas Police Department liked it so much that they put a poster with the phrase on their station display case.  The same guy behind "Get a brain, MORANS"also made a handwritten poster of it at a Tea Party rally.

Either way, there has been an explosion of merchandise - well prior to the pic - that will let you express your Puritanical disdain at the same time as your anti-socialist political leanings!

Why not become a fan of the Give Tiger A Break, Obama Is Screwing the Whole Country group on Facebook? (Or the more popular one of the same name.)

Maybe a decal for your American made, gas guzzling Chevy Tahoe?

There are like 20 versions of this shirt floating around the Interwebs. Herehere, and here for starters.  C'mon down, Cafe Press!

So, there you have it.

Yes, he is singlehandedly ruining the country, which was, of course, running perfectly well before him.

Nope. That’s just not the case. Both major political parties are destroying the country, and the voters are letting them do it. America is getting exactly the government it deserves, because they continually buy in to the load of crap they are sold every other year.

I foresee the US remaining whole for two generations, no more.

Progolf: you may be interested to know that Jeb Bush (whose mother Barbara said was smarter than G. W.) is positioning himself for a run in 2016, and may well even be a compromise candidate in 2012.

He denies 2012, but does not rule out 2016 at the same time.

Given his record in Florida, I may well support him. Jeb is pragmatic and far less dogmatic than his younger brother and his record shows as much.

When my grandfather retired from NASA, he decided he was going to buy him some land and run a farm … god knows why, I guess it was his daydream come true. Anyway, it was in Preston, Georgia, a little no stoplight (back then) town that was nine miles from Plains, Ga. where Billy, Jimmy, Hugh and the whole hee-haw gang lived.

To put it mildly, my granddad despised Billy and called him “Otis” — after the Andy Griffith show’s “Otis the Town Drunk.”

Why I remember that, I have no idea, but I was nine years old back then and heard it I guess 500 times.

Iraq wasn’t just for craps and giggles. It was because the UN refused to do what it was supposed to do. Saddam signed surrender papers after being beaten back out of Kuwait. He was supposed to allow UN investigators and inspectors access to any and all areas of the country – but he stalled and refused and played games for 12 years. He had re-started his nuclear program, and was killing his own people with chemical weapons.

You’ve tried to justify the invasion of Iraq on grounds of non-compliance with UN mandates – therefore surely it would only be “right” to invade the counties in more non-compliance first? You’ve tried to justify the invasion of Iraq on grounds of killing their own people – therefore surely N. Korea/Zimbabwe should have been more legitimate targets?

What direct threat did Iraq have against UK/US?

The only point we’re likely to agree on is that the UN is a joke.

Hmmm – so at what point in the last 4000 years has the middle east been “stable” ?

My idea has been to go in, take away ALL the modern weapons and amunition, build a wall around the whole area, run a pipe under to the oil – and just let these people either beat each other to death with rocks…or figure out a way to get along.

You don’t know me well enough to know how really unimpressed I am with myself.

Of course if you don’t want to don’t want to answer me you don’t have to, but there have been other wars in your lifetime, not just the current one. Why didn’t you volunteer to serve the country you profess to love so much after high school or after college?

The only effective chemical and biological weapons Iraq ever possessed were provided by the Reagan administration in the 80s so they could use them against Iran. The problem Iraq had is that those weapons have a limited shelf life. Under the best of circumstances they’re good at most seven years. After that they deteriorate rapidly. Following the Iran-Iraq war, which ended in 1988, Iraq made an attempt to develop their own CB weapons — without the actual expertise to do so correctly. In 1998, UN weapons inspectors identified a couple of factories attempting to make these concoctions. President Clinton ordered cruise missle attacks on those facilities in 1998. That was the end of Iraq’s WMD program.

Unfortunately, the Bush and Cheney decided to attack Iraq, probably so they could get access to the oil (that’s what oilmen do, ya know?). So they cooked the intellegence, see the Downing Street Memos. They used the manufactured data to browbeat congress to approve a resolution and provide funding for an invasion. They also convinced England and a few other countries to join in a “coalition.”

Here’s the problem: Iraq had nothing to do with highjacking airplanes in 2001. Neither did Afghanistan. In my opinion the correct course of action would have been a swift, untelegraphed surgical strike on the well-known al Qaeda camps inside Afghanistan to get those who planned 9/11. Almost everyone in the Middle East would have acknowledged the righteousness of such a plan. Instead, Bush-Cheney decided on massive invasions that have resulted in some really negative consequences, including:

1) Muslims in Asia, Africa and Europe are convinced the US has declared war on their religion. They worship the same God you do, just differently.

2) The populations of the invaded countries don’t like having foreign troops any more than we would. They’re fighting against foreign invaders, with the intent of killing as many as possible.

3) Countries with whom the US has had conflict (Iran and North Korea) have decided they’re better off having nuclear weapons than not, because the US will invade on trumped up evidence regardless.

I understand that it’s easy to get wrapped up in the “patriotism” of us against them and let’s go kill ‘em there before they get us here. I was floating aimlessly in college in 1966. The media was all abuzz with domino theories and threats from the “red menace.” I got caught up in the hyperbole, quit college and joined the Army. During my tour in Vietnam I witnessed the Tet Offensive and the human cost of war. You say, "it’s never good," but I don’t think you do so with any conviction.

President Obama is not a socialist, he’s not a communist, he’s not a Muslim, he WAS born in the United States. He loves and has every intention of serving this country to the best of his ability, as you, I or any other citizen would wish him to do. It’s OK to disagree with him. Unfortunately the current political climate is nothing short of ugly. Real conservatives like Barry Goldwater, Bill Miller and William Buckley would disavow the garbage perpetrated by the right-wing media and the tea baggers. Republicans have no ideas and have forgotten how to govern because they don’t like government, in any form.

EM, I know you have a sense of humor, I’ve seen it in your posts. Even though we’ve disagreed about a number of things, I think you’re honest, intelligent and well-intentioned. But I also think you’re outside your area of expertise and you’re reacting based solely on emotion.

Almost all countries believed the US and International intel of WMDs and only after they weren’t found did the fine upstanding DEMs start distancing themselves from the war and took the opportunity to attack Bush. The cowards in France and our fine neighbors in Canada did not support the coalition, but it was not anywhere near a “on his own” war.

No, they didn't em.

It was a complete fabrication. Saddam prevaricated about whether he had WMD as a stand-off against Iran Much like the cold war between west/east. Saddam instigated NO terrorism against the west. Certainly he would have been delighted that others did.

by WendyUK on Jul 28, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

wow – you really believe that ? The man had a nuclear weapons program running. He had chemical and biological weapons programs running that he was testing on his own people. He boasted about his ability to take over the middle east by force. He boasted about how good his air force was…which was quickly disproved by US and UK pilots, by the way…

The man bragged about his weapons. Your own leaders believed that he had them. Democrats in this country – including Shrillary Clintax who shreaked about Saddam while hubby was in office, then changed her tune when Bush was elected – all publicly stated that Iraq had the weapons until Bush got into office.

Saddam was a bastard no doubt – but he was NO threat to UK/US. Why can’t you look into/understand a little more about middle-east countries relations rather than just see everything in US terms?

by WendyUK on Jul 28, 2010 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Blair lied to Parliament ?? Just how is telling the truth a lie ?

This has nothing to do with US/UK terms. This has to with the fact that a nut case was in charge of a very dangerous set of weapons and was going about proving that he had no conscious about using them.

The man was NOT a muslim. He was a military dictator who used religion as another cowardly sheild to hide behind – just like he used women and children to hide behind when troops were closing in on his sorry butt.

Hardly…you and I both know arming someone like that was risky…you can bet Regan did too…but then it was deemed worth it, if it meant Iran going down at the time. After all, Vietnam was still recent history at the time. The American public wouldn’t have stood for another war so soon after. So arm Saddam, he will do it for us.

Of course it’s short sighted. The history of that region is full of ups and downs and swings from one religious sect to another.

Allying yourself with one – complete with military support eventually backfires when another group steps up and asserts power. It’s idiotic to bounce from one group to another, supplying weapons along the way. Sooner or later, everybody hates you.

by WendyUK on Jul 28, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

And you did the same to us, Wendy – that’s how loans work.

We had to fight a war to get out from under English rule – but that was almost 200 years before WWII. Britain had almost stopped trying to take over the world by then (of course, there was that nasty India incident with that short fellow…Ghandi). FDR was the start of what has lead us to Obama – and I have no idea why he wouldn’t get into the war before he did. Looking at it 70 years after the fact doesn’t give a whole lot of clarity to the answers.

Now you want to support Obama and declare other leaders to be liars when Obama showed in his first week in office that he was going to turn his back on the UK. The man insulted Britain by boxing up a gift given to the US after 9/11 and sendng it back so he could put up a framed magazine cover of himself.

You must surely know by now that Easing and I have a great love of the USA. Criticising political leaders (yours & ours) & some of their idiotic & dangerous decisions is not an attack on you, Court, or the American people. Your attacks on UK are far more personal, however. Here’s the theory around that, though – works here, too – the more arguing and screaming and fighting they do, the less time they have to intrude in our lives.

And I don’t bring up past wars (where we saved your bacon) (who said that !) every time we have a discussion. And how can they be a personal attack when you weren’t a part of those wars anyway ? You say your criticisms aren’t personal, but mine are…when we are in the same position ?

It hasn’t really changed all that much for the vast majority. We go to work, we pay our bills, and if we’re smart we save for the future.

For those who lost their jobs in the latest recession, it’s been a cesspool of awfulness, but the truth is that it wouldn’t matter if Jeebus H. Christo was president, they’d still be unemployed until things get better.

Had John McCain won in 2008 it would be the other side of the coin with Democrats railing that he was the anti-Christ and that we’re all going to die any day now because of the evil that lives in the White House. They would second guess everything he did and carp that it was the worst decision since, well, his last decision.

America is a country now that is so polarized it cannot build consensus, and in the rare moments it does, it lasts for nanoseconds before the arguing begins again. Meanwhile, the real problems we face as a country go unsolved, and will.

Nobody in the medical field was in favor of the Healthcare Reform Act? That’s factually incorrect:

March 19, 2010 — The American Medical Association (AMA) today announced its qualified support for Democratic healthcare reform legislation scheduled to come before the House this Sunday for a historic vote.

“The pending bill isn’t perfect, but we can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good,” AMA President J. James Rohack, MD, said at a press conference Friday.

That wasn’t an individual’s statement – the AMA is an organization, much like a union, that will pretty much cowtow to a government and leader who has no problem taking over at the point of the government gun. Of COURSE they’re going to say that. If they dared to stand up to Barry, they would face all kinds of retribution.

Nice try, but

The New England Journal of Medicine:
http://healthcarereform.nejm.org/?p=1790

Overall, a majority of physicians (62.9%) supported public and private options (see Panel A of graph). Only 27.3% supported offering private options only. Respondents — across all demographic subgroups, specialties, practice locations, and practice types — showed majority support (>57.4%) for the inclusion of a public option (see Table 1). Primary care providers were the most likely to support a public option (65.2%); among the other specialty groups, the "other" physicians — those in fields that generally have less regular direct contact with patients, such as radiology, anesthesiology, and nuclear medicine — were the least likely to support a public option, though 57.4% did so. Physicians in every census region showed majority support for a public option, with percentages in favor ranging from 58.9% in the South to 69.7% in the Northeast.

Again, it is a factual error to say that healthcare reform had no support amongst medical professionals in this country.

Good lord, NEJM conducted a scientifically based survey and you try to float a red herring that they (NEJM) are a business so it is inherently inaccurate?

But again, FAIL. NEJM is published by the Massachusetts Medical Society, a non-profit organization that consists of approximately 22,000 physicians, medical students and residents.

But, let’s take your argument to its logical conclusion:

Fox News is a business, they must tell lies!

So is CNN. So is ABC, NBC, AP, Gannett, Time-Warner, etc. et al.

Rush Limbaugh’s production company is a business, he must tell lies!

Then you say “physicians are overwhelmingly against what they are finding out about Barry’s little takeover plan.”

Care to illustrate that with anything more than prapocryphal “I say so” proof?

by Charles Boyer on Jul 28, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Eas, please notice there is a constant in all these responses (except OMP)

FEAR!
In reality, those who made less than $250,000 last year paid less in taxes then they did the year before, and the year before that, and the year before that, all the way back to Bill Clinton. But all you’ll hear from the fox news crowd is that taxes have gone up because they want you to vote for republicans.

Access to health care (other than in the emergency room) in the US is tied to employment. If you have a job and your employer CHOOSES to provide insurance, you, the employee, have the opportunity to purchase it at an almost reasonable price. If your employer doesn’t provide an insurance plan or you’re self-employed, you can purchase directly from an insurance company for significantly more money. But here’s the deal, the insurance company has stock holder who expect to get dividend checks every quarter and corporate officers who make seven-figure salaries and expect bonuses each year. The only way to accomplish those goals is to increase premiums while denying care for those policy holders who are unfortunate enough to get sick. This year congress passed and the president signed legislation that mitigates some of the abuses perpetrated by insurance companies and makes insurance more affordable for families. The response of the fox news crowd has been to instill fear by insisting that the legislation contains a provision for “death panels” who decided who lives and who dies. It does no such thing, but FEAR is a great motivator when you’re a republican.

The US is in debt. We had a surplus when Bill Clinton left office, but George and Dick decided their very wealthy cronies needed corporate welfare and tax cuts. Then they started two unnecessary wars and ran them off the books. When President Obama took office he put the debt from those wars on the books, the size of the staggering deficit became known. republicans don’t want to remember any of that so all you hear is FEAR that the country is on the verge of financial failure. While that may be true, it’s due to benefits given to the rich and powerful, not those who are unemployed.

There’s more, but I’m tired of typing. The bottom line is the country was significantly better off with high employment and low debt under Clinton. Bush-Cheney policies bankrupted the country. Republicans will try to push the blame elsewhere, but that’s not true. Obama is trying to reverse eight years of abuse and republicans are scared to death that he’ll be successful. That’s why they’ve done nothing but lie and obstruct since January 2009.

Fear ? Yep – based in rational understanding that this man wants to destroy this country. We are getting closer and closer to the tipping point (50.1 %) of non-tax paying citizens (not including the tens of millions of illegals). At that point, the non-tax paying citizens will have the power to put people in office who promise the most free stuff and those people won’t be able to be stopped. D – I’m sorry – but your understanding of how things can actually work is fatally flawed and it will eventually destroy the country.

By the way – we never had a surplus under Clinton. He fudged his numbers by including the Social Security funds in the general funds – which is against the rules.

TENS of millions?

The Department of Homeland Security reported that illegal immigrant population dropped to 10.8 million in 2009 compared to 11.6 million in 2008. It was the second consecutive annual decline and the largest in at least three decades.

Court, I have to say that your exaggerations are illustrating your polemics, which in turn is undermining your argument’s credibility.

by Charles Boyer on Jul 28, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s one estimate. Other groups estimate over 20 million. I forget where I saw it, but another group had the number at almost 40 million. (not buying that one).

Isn’t 20 million “tens of millions” ?

Again, cite credible sources, and try to do better than the agit-prop of The John Birch Society.

by Charles Boyer on Jul 28, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

No – it’s not acceptable. What you’re missing is that our government has given illegals more legal standing in this country than it does the citizens. This government is forcing the law abiding citizen to pay for the illegal’s medical bills and education and insurance bills (cars etc). The illegals are given welfare checks without putting anything into the system.

You have to accept that in this smaller world

the poor will try to get to the rich countries. It’s not just you…it’s all over Europe as well. Yes, it has to be controlled, but it happens. After all, your whole country is made up of “illegals” as you put it, that’s what built you in the first place. It was ok then to slaughter the natives so you could have it. The trouble is, all nations have a dark past and playing the high moral ground smacks of hypocrisy. We have to show some humane qualities to eachother…these illegals might put something into the system if they were allowed to, but of course there is no chance of that. The bottom line is we are a greedy bunch of people here in the West and as a group couldn’t care less about the rest of the world so long as we dominate the world and call the shots. When people starve and kill eachother around the world it’s easier to look away…unless there’s oil in it of course.

Institutionally the country has done none of those things, CG. And even if it had, they would have been done on behalf of businesses that want cheap labor. If you want to end illegal immigration, start putting employers who hire them in prison.

You’re not serious. Ok – homework assignment for you. Take a trip to your closest welfare office and watch who goes in and comes out. Sorry you can’t come down here to see what our tax dollars are going for. Most of the people standing in line speak no English. Multiple babies. And all collecting taxpayer dollars without putting anything in.

Tell me that’s not institutional change.

Easy......you do know the difference between

legal and illegal??? There is no problem with legal immigrants, especially those who become citizens……it’s the millions of “illegals” coming across the border that are the problem, especially the criminals.

by em66 on Jul 29, 2010 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Of course..we get them here too.

I never said it was legal and it has to be controlled. It’s a worldwide problem, not just in the USA. It’s the massive imbalance of world wealth that creates the problem and it takes more than strict laws and border controls to stop it. I doubt it will ever be solved.

by Easingwold on Jul 29, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

It's got to be solved.

We can’t continue funding these people. I’m sorry, but they contribute nothing to our society, the drop out rate from High School is astronomical, so there is no hope of attaining that wealth they are seeking, at least legally. So we just sit back and let this “unsolvable” problem bankrupt us????, we know Obammmmma wants that honor.

Of course we can – you did, too. You have stricter immigration laws than the US – but way back when, you were a country of immigrants, too.

6 billion people on this planet and rising..

do you think the rich countries we live in will give way and stop exploiting the poorer countries and share the wealth more evenly ? Not in our lifetimes mate…

by Easingwold on Jul 29, 2010 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I work hard for my wealth, what little I have, but

you’d have me share it with some lazy slug who has never even tried to work……USA is the most generous country in the world, always helping those less fortunate, but socialism isn’t the answer……with socialism, we won’t have wealth to help others.

The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!

by em66 on Jul 29, 2010 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure you do work hard...so do I

because we have that chance to. Do we work harder than some poor soul trying to feed his family in a 3rd world nation ? Not a chance. As for generosity, the USA is not even close. You may be surprised to know that the most generous is Luxembourg… Donor aid per capita is $490.59…the UK is 6th with $176.06. Even Portugal is above you at 17th at $25.46…you come next at 18th with $22.91. Not very generous in light of all the money you have.

by Easingwold on Jul 29, 2010 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Luxembourg has a population of 4, so

yeah, the per capita will be higher. Tell me what country gives the most money…..not per capita, but gross dollars given???

The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!

by em66 on Jul 29, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Em, per capita means

Each person. You give 22 bucks, I give 176 bucks on average. Now, as you have a higher standard of living than I do ( average) I’m a lot more generous.

by Easingwold on Jul 29, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I know what per capita means....thus the

hilarious comment about Luxembourg……ok, you didn’t get it…..When someone is receiving help they are more interested in the total amount, not what each person gives……so, back to my question…..Who gives the most gross…..

The UK is...

60 million people 176 each…USA 300 million people 22 each you can do the rest of the maths…

by Easingwold on Jul 29, 2010 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Eas – why do you (giving you credit for being the UK) :-) insist on trying to tell the US what to do and how to do it ? Do you hear us telling you to fire the queen ? (can you fire a queen ?)

Ya got it all wrong OMP

what we’s goona do here, is send more of the Mess=a-kins north….that way, all the liberals can hire them, pay SS tax and have more of those dollars they earn sent back to MEK-E-KO every Friday….Pretty soon, when they only sleep 15 to a room, the landlords will start losing more money, and go on Obamas wellfare wagon….All the high earners like TX will get their taxes raised to help pay for the food stamp programs yur gonna need up there…And maybe Diane could get a chance to do some language counceling, cause they won’t understand push 1 for English, 2 for sumthin else…Oh yea, all your street signs will have to be changed to Spanish, so they know how to get to the welfare office…And for the Cartels, simple solution…We got a Sheriff in AZ…who has the answer….just shoot anyone sneaking over the border…works well in other countries…either that, or just slap um in jail…STUB

LOL, companies like mine export jobs to Mexico as fast as we can. It’s cheaper to hire ten employees at $1.50 an hour than pay one trained American $17.50.
